I always confused Ed Dwight with Ed White (famous for space walking and Apollo I). It’s good to see this Ed come out of that shadow.

It has to do with the history of race in the USA... for generations, if you had even a drop of African blood, you were considered colored/negro/black (the words of the times, not mine). In recent generations, the enlightened among us tend to not care about it, AT ALL; while many "people" still clinging to tribal differences treat them as subhuman. Sadly, those people will all use the excuse of "faith" as to why they are so closed minded.
You're right though; Ed Dwight is very light colored for a "black" man, but in the USA that's what he considers his path through life, complete with all sorts of annoying people harassing him simply due to that slightly darker skin.
His skin tone is even more common in Louisiana lol we have black people who can pass as white with straight hair, pale skin, colored eyes.
Lots of mixing going on in America from day one.

exactly... they passed the Karman line briefly - they did not get to orbit. Sorry but this is not the 1960s; in order to be considered an astronaut these days, you must enter orbit. These joyride flyers are exactly that, NOT astronauts.
Well deserved even if merely as an inspiration for better qualified candidates to get in line, get picked, and get great missions. Dwight was cynically manipulated for party politics back in those days, and it's happening again, sadly.
