My mother and I made a pact a while back that I would have this played at her services when she passes away, not just due to our love of the great Dixie Carter but because her version of that song is one of the best versions ever!
To this day I personally feel there is still No other singer that can match her Beautiful voice on this song! It truly is as though God granted Dixie this song!!!
@SplinterG66 I ORDERED THE SECOND SEASON OF DESIGNING WOMEN BECAUSE I COUDLN'T FIND ANY RECORDINGS OF THIS. AND I, TOO, ABSOLUTELY LOVED BERNICE'S REBUTTAL TO THE PREACHER'S COMMENTS. I COULD LISTEN TO THIS OVER AND OVER FOR HOURS...
RIP DIXIE CARTER........NOW IN HEAVEN SINGING WITH THE ANGELS.....LOVE THIS SONG, AN ALL TIME FAVORITE, ,,,,,,,,ITS EVEN BETTER WHEN AN ANGEL SINGS IT....IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE ONE AND ONLY DIXIE CARTER....FOREVER LOVED
Such a class act! This was one of my favorite episodes and one of my favorite versions of How Great Thou Art! Wish she could have sang another verse or two - or ten!! Just so beautiful and moving!
I saw the full episode- and I think you really have to see the whole thing to understand why the rendition is so powerful and so inspiring, and why Charlene looks up to God at the end of it.
I remember having seen the episode. It had to do with Charlene recapturing her faith because she was in serious disagreement with a pastor. Also note that Hal Holbrook, Dixie Carter's real life husband, is mesmerized by his wife's powerful voice. The show was a ridiculous in many ways, but emblematic of the social change and stylistic changes of the 1990s. It touched serious chords. My understanding is that Dixie Carter, an accomplished Broadway actress, willingly gave into the silliness to keep a job, but one of the caveats was that she got to do this once in a great while.
@@GoodmanMIke59 I believe it was for every "liberal rant" she had to give on camera, she'd be allowed to sing a song on camera too. The episode was about women in church, and what a woman's place is in church, an important discussion still being had today due to sexism in Christianity and Christian men using the Bible to justify their sexism when faith is meant to lift people up.
@@outinsider In 2013, I ran headlong into that of which you speak. Very traumatic. Went online, Googling religions that respect women ( or something to that effect) and Jimmy Carter came up as having left his longtime church because of their stance re women. So, I wrote him a letter. He wrote a brief note back telling me he was writing a book about my concerns. "A Call to Action" came out in 2014, and I bought a copy. Reading it, I perceived that Mr. Carter seemed to admire Ruth because she was more like a man than a woman and would never have been asked to do "menial" household chores. His own mother did private duty nursing and it took TWO women to cover her position in the home. That speaks volumes about what mothers/home managers DO! And you can be sure these hired domestic workers were paid a fraction of what Jimmy's mother made doing private duty ( which I believe often can be a cake job, mostly sitting!) In early 2015, online, I heard Jimmy Carter speak as one of a panel on Al Jazeera, regarding women's issues. I was dumbfounded and disappointed, again, when he made a comment to the effect of, if not verbatim, that " the reason we should treat women better is so they can take care of their parents when they get older". More free (or grossly underpaid) labor provided by females. Society basically still using women as slaves. I found out that a lot of Liberals are actually misogynist frauds and dangerous hypocrites when it comes to their REAL views and behaviors towards women. The legal system is doing unspeakable things to vulnerable females in my state and evidence indicates is known for their discrimination against females. It's still a good ole boy world and liberals are some of the worst. Pretty depressing and evil.
I remember the first time I saw this episode and heard Ms. Carter sing this hymn. I cried then and I cry each time I hear it. Not because it's sad, but because of her talent. I have to agree with jaybird74, Ms. Carter singing to God's face, and Him saying, "Welcome home, honey!" Amen to that! She will be missed.
Whenever I watch this video, I end up crying my eyes out. It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard, and it was my mom's favorite hymn, so it means a great deal to me. Thanks for posting.
Dixie sounded like a Angel then, and I am sure sure is singing with them now. This is my favorite gospel song and I have never heard it performed better than this. I look forward to the day I can keel before God and tell Him how great He is.
This is my favorite version of this hymn. RIP Dixie Carter. Heaven must have needed another heavenly vioce in it's choir. My condolences and prayers are with her family.
I hope Mr. Holbrook and Miss Carter's daughters can watch this today, or soon. It brought tears to my eyes, but it also assured me of where Miss Carter is now. Peace to the family.
I was fortunate to meet and drive Miss Dixie about a year before she passed away. She was such a lady - friendly, personable, and as nice as could be. She is missed. And as a footnote I met and drove Mr Holbrooke the next day and we discussed history, literature, and Mark Twain. What an experience. A wonderful couple - there like will not be seen again.
Absolutely amazing. This is so inspirational. I do well up a bit when I hear this. Dixie Carter was blessed with a beautiful voice, and thank goodness we were able to hear it. She is singing with the angels now. You are truly missed.
I did not know that she had passed on. But I agree, she is singing with the heavenly choir now. Putting a smile on God's face with that superb soprano voice of hers. Wow...it brought tears to my eyes.
04/11/2010 Dixie Carter has been called home. This is my favorite hymn that is so perfect for her lovely voice. I love watching her husband, Hal Holbrook in the audience looking at her with such devotion and love. I know that her love will be there for him always. I am so grateful that he shared her with us. God bless. She is in our prayers as is her devoted husband.
What an exceptional voice.. Such a powerful song..I don't think I've ever heard it sung more beautifully...no, I don't think so. We'll think of you singing with the angels now, dear Dixie, and we'll miss you~
Doesn't she have a wonderful voice? I had the rare pleasure of meeting this lovely lady when she was appearing at Disney MGM Studios a few years ago and got to chat with her for quite a while - she is every inch a true lady!
I remember watching this when it originally aired and said to myself "my GOD, what a voice, who knew?" well, God knows for sure now that the beloved Miss Carter is with him in Heaven and he gets to hear her sing this all the time.. well done Dixie !
My ex & I watched the show ALL the time. We saw this episode together. I was so moved. I still get teary eyed every time I see & hear this. And yes, this by far is the best rendition I have ever heard.
I absolutely love Dixie. I wish I had the opportunity to meet her because from what I've read she really had a heart for the Lord. I think that is what makes this performance such a blessing. She really meant the words that she was singing. I'm sure she's beside Him now just praising His name. How great Thou art, O Lord, how great Thou art!
Diixie Carter was one of my favorites on the show, Designing Women. I admired her for the spunk that she portrayed on the show, and she looked beautiful, and respectful doing it. I only wish that I had met in person. I really liked her charactor.
This was the best episode and I so loved watching this show,, Watching Hal Holbrook, who was her spouse in real life, watch her sing this beautiful song,, well,,, I have tears. Rest in Peace Dixie. my goodness,,,, I'm still crying here,,,,,
I so agree with Roland Taylor's comment. Such a moving rendition, the combination of Dixie Carter's voice and the brilliant orchestral and choral accompaniment makes this the most beautiful!
Thanks for posting this I have always been a huge fan of Dixie and was sad to learn of her death and this is the clip I was looking for very fitting for the occation RIP Dixie you were a true DIVA !
I wish I could find the clip of the earlier part of this episode, when Bernice so elequently tells the preacher off. She speaks of women's rights, and how after the crucifixion of christ, after all the MEN went home, it was WOMEN who stayed till the bitter end!!! Any help out there?
You are missed Dixie, but we know you are in a better place full of love. Hal, may God comfort you with the knowlege that you'll be together again. What a talent.
This was one of my favorite episodes. The plot dealt with women not being allowed in the pulpit in the Catholic church! Charlene was going to leave the church but came back to hear Julia and she tore this song up! RIP Dixie!
@LADiEHAMO88 Aww, I know it was a moment killer, but you cracked me up! I had to watch the video again because I didn't notice the lady with the glasses until I read your pose!!
I think this is just great, the networks would never allow this to be sung like this on primetime. Amazing show, but it went downhill superfast when Charlene and Suzanne exited.
@TheCoupechopper Exactly. Watching this as an adult, I can catch on to the inuendos. But watching it as a kid, it was a safe show and fun to watch b/c the things they'd say were so above the head of a child that you could just enjoy it.
this is SO much better than that screeching Sandi Patti version! Sandi Patti sounds like Florence Foster Jenkins compared to the incredible Dixie Carter!
miss Carter was a blessed, and gifted soprano, her range may have been 4 octaves.Just like Pavarotti, who had a 4 octave range,I am also a tenor, and may have a 4 octave range.Miss Carter was scared about singing this Hymn, because one must use every note, from low to high, including a High-A- sharp. This is why most singers who have a high range, like tenors, and sopranos, sing this song,it is way to high for a baritone, and contralto.Although George Beverly Shea sang it,and gang it good.but is more suited to the tenor, and soprano voice.but, was written to glorify The Almighty.Bless,us and praise his Name.!GB.Shea was a Bass-Baritone.!
My mother and I made a pact a while back that I would have this played at her services when she passes away, not just due to our love of the great Dixie Carter but because her version of that song is one of the best versions ever!
Nothing on TV these days this good.......
To this day I personally feel there is still No other singer that can match her Beautiful voice on this song! It truly is as though God granted Dixie this song!!!
I totally agree ❤
@SplinterG66
I ORDERED THE SECOND SEASON OF DESIGNING WOMEN BECAUSE I COUDLN'T FIND ANY RECORDINGS OF THIS. AND I, TOO, ABSOLUTELY LOVED BERNICE'S REBUTTAL TO THE PREACHER'S COMMENTS. I COULD LISTEN TO THIS OVER AND OVER FOR HOURS...
This is the best arrangement of this song. At the end, when Charlene looks up to sky, as if God understands her problems, was just fantastic
“As if?” He does, indeed.
that was so beautifu! i just ant to cry now!
The very best version of this beautiful song by Dixie Carter.
absolutely STUNNING!!! One of favorite episodes!!!!
Holy heck. This gives me chills everytime. Was she ever on Broadway? She should have been!
Her voice gave me chills absolutely beautiful
Rest Dixie, May you forever dance with Angels.
What a beautiful class act! I will always remember her as the wonderful Julia Sugarbaker. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.
Always loved this arrangement. Still gives me chills.
Such a class act! This was one of my favorite episodes and one of my favorite versions of How Great Thou Art! Wish she could have sang another verse or two - or ten!! Just so beautiful and moving!
I have always loved Dixie Carter singing this song. My heart goes out to her family at this time. She was a true class act and will be missed.
What a blessing Dixie is!!
RIP Dixie Carter amazing voice!

I have this on my favorite play list & it makes me get teary eyed each time. I love the way she looks at Hal Holden at the end .
The look he gave her....he loved her so. You can see the love and adoration in his eyes. Truly a great couple.
WOW! that was a great version, so moving, I have chills! love the arrangement!
I remember when this aired, and it makes me teary-eyed now, considering that Dixie is no longer with us.
One of the best moments of this show.

no, they do NOT need a black backup. this was perfect as is.
Can't drop link but google Methodist Dixie by Mark Tooley at American Spectator.
it's called How Great Thou Art
this is SO much better than that screeching Sandi Patti version! Sandi Patti sounds like Florence Foster Jenkins compared to the incredible Dixie Carter!
Now she can sing GOD's praise to His face - and He can say " Welcome home, honey!:
@roxelys Appropriately enough....it was titled How Great Thou Art
@646guy tnks :)
@roxelys how great thou art.
This is Sandi Patty's arrangement!
