I disagree about Barbossa. The biggest saving grace of the 4th film, was finding out halfway through that Barbossa was only using the Royal Navy because they had the adequate resources for him to chase down and eventually kill Blackbeard. His final scene with him back in his old outfit along with his natural personality, is a great pay-off. Now in 5, the movie implies that Barbossa has decided that he actually somewhat enjoyed playing "good", and has gone back to wearing and acting like something resembling a commissioned officer. His softened personality and outward appearance only made him come across as weak and unrecognisable from earlier films. The movie didn't have to go to these lengths just to prove that the guy has newfound feelings.
It also makes no sense that Carina is his daughter. Jack says they knew her mother back in the day, before Barbossa’s mutiny. When Barbossa turns on Jack, Jack goes for 13 years before he gets the ship back in 1728, and Barbossa was trying to collect all the cursed Aztec gold in between. This movie is set in 1751. That’s 36 years. Carina was supposedly born in 1732, meaning she’s 19. How exactly does that even work?
He’s a lot older in that film and the ending of his character was perfect. Any longer and it would just be sad to watch. Geoffrey rush was 64 during filming
@@alexman378 unless her death is specified at any point during the time of when jack knew her, then it's possible Barbossa eventually showed up years later, then decided it was time to get the milk after he spent a night with the woman, having no idea he and her were about to have a child in the upcoming months
There is so much wrong with this movie. There is the very uncharacteristic Jack Sparrow, the complete unlogical plot in regards to the previous movies, the changing of prior plot (like Jack getting the compass from Calypso and not from a random sailor) and so much more. At least the bank heist was funny
@Sherry Extra Dry If I remember correctly, he only could return for one day every 10 years. What I found weird though is that he and his crew on the Dutchman slowly changed into monsters. I don't think that Will wouldn't do his duty of laying dead sailors to rest. Also, Davy Jones also entered land to meet Jack and Co. So Will could see his sun a lot more often, if he wanted to, right?
@@oberlurch-handimations8628 I always took that as they are slowly turning because they can't possibly ferry every single that soul that dies at sea, there's just too many.
The thing that annoyed me the most during the movie is how underused the _Flying Dutchman_ was. It only served as the plot for Henry's determination. Keep in mind, it was a ship used for *ferrying the dead to the afterlife.* Salazar and his crew are undead, meaning that the _Dutchman_ had to get involved somehow. But nope, it wasn't. Such a waste of potential. Also, imagine how awesome a battle with the _Flying Dutchman_ and the _Black Pearl_ against the _Silent Mary_ would be!
What annoys me about the retcon with Jack’s compass is that it didn’t need to happen. Just make it so he already secretly had this magic device that he never really got to use before because of his low rank on the crew, then after Salazar kills Jack’s captain, Jack finally gets to use that compass properly. As the scene is, it just feels like the movie came down with a case of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and pointlessly felt the need to show the origin of the main character’s every component.
I feel like Johnny Depp was completely hammered throughout this movie. He slurs all his lines and I hear stories about how he turned up late to set, smelling of booze. It was no secret that he was an alcoholic (after putting up with Amber Heard, I can’t blame him) and it shows here.
That was the most idiotic comment today congratulations. It's not Depps fault the writing sucks donkey balls in this step by step guide to kill a frenchise
@@barborajezkova8393 You say that yet coincidentally this actor was also an alcoholic during a big portion of these movies timeline. Doesn't take away from his ability as we all know he is a phenomenal actor, unfortunately if it weren't for the bottle (and of course the false allegations) he could still be involved, though I do think he is better off nowadays, especially disney completely burning their bridge so we will most likely never see him again as Jack, though he did say if enough of his fans wanted it then he would consider it again
8:53 it has been revealed by Johnny himself (while on the stand during the Amber case) that he did not get to write for Jack in this movie, like he did for 1-4. Explains a lot. No one knows the character better than he, and he hardly had any say for Jack in this film. And look what we got. So sad :(
Thank you Amber you ruined everything for the fifth movie if Johanny got to write his character for the fifth movie it would be 10 times better then what we got
I always felt like the story would almost have been better if Henry remained an eleven, twelve year old boy who found Jack after stowing away on ships and being resourceful, and Jack initially decided to at the very least see this little inconvinience home safely as a favor to Elizabeth, until he produced some kind of clue that persauded Jack that all right, so maybe the trident of Poseidon aren't all myth; so he tells Gibbs to "hide the rum" and tells the lad with the exaggerated grin that you know what, boy, we might be able to help your father after all, as they were going to take a detour. Shenanigans ensue. Just the idea of a Jack Sparrow transitioning from something akin to a reluctant babysitter to a funny uncle for twelve year old Henry as Will and Elizabeth's son grows on him sounds really wholesome to me, as Henry proves to be quick-witted and resourceful, and might use the fact that he is a child to get into a place no adult civilian, let alone pirate, could simply walk through the door by claiming one of the red-coats guarding it was his father, and steal something Jack needs. Sort of like when Mullroy and Murtogg starts bickering, and Jack looks from one to the other with a "oh my god, these two..." look, only this time it is Henry who looks between Jack and Gibbs as they quibble about the best way to get inside this area, and though they freak out a bit when they find Henry gone, once he shows up again, with what Jack needs for the journey, Jack can acknowledge his wit and take him on as a cabin boy for the remainder of the voyage, and stops walking on eggshells around him because he is capable, and not simply little "Will's boy" or "Elizabeth's son".
That sounds monumentaly better than what we got, and for a funny moment. They could have little Henry use some rum kegs in a net to wreak some of Jack's pursuers, with Jack witnessing it and saying "He's definitely Elizabeth's lad that one."
@@nitrocatmeower8941 Ingenious. Give me a head's up in 25 years if Disney decide to reboot PoTC with new actors - perhaps we can infiltrate the writing staff or something?
That sounds AMAZING. In addition, that fixes another issue with this movie... which is that Henry visibly ages, but the other characters like Jack don't seem that different. I feel like with how much he's grown into a late teens early twenty's character, Jack should've looked older. But no, he just looked completely the same, despite perhaps 20 years passing. I can buy will not looking older since maybe the curse kept him in the state he was in when he stabbed the heart, but it felt weird that Jack looked the same.
also since elizabeth's the pirate king, will's the flying dutchman captain, just how much of a pirate royalty henry turner must be. he should be BREATHING sea and adrenaline, a young prodigy always on adventure. it would've been a nice transition from the first trilogy to another set of films centering around henry and his team with occasional cameo of jack sparrow and barbossa as "cool uncles". it would save old characters legacy and pave the road for new actors and new stories. name it smth like pirates of the seven seas, cast any person of any nationality next to obvi white henry turner, the pirate prince, explore other pirate lords' domains which were teased in at world's end and you're still relevant and coherent! money's flowing, viewers are happy, another trademarks are made and merch is sold!
@@ethel-cIt's astounding how a random RUclips comment is more well-thought-out than a corporate writing room. Then again, business is allergic to good art, so it makes sense
The best line in stranger tides was after jack dived from the lighthouse …” now did everybody see that because I won’t be doing it again”…dunno why but it gets me every time.
What I fucking hate about this movie is how captain Salazar already didn't escape in the couple first movies because Jack gave up the compass multiple times in the past movies meaning Salazar would have been out the devils triangle years before
Having just rewatched the first 4 movies, I would say that this is not necessarily the case. In all the previous cases of Jack giving away the compass, he was just handing it over as part of his plans. The important thing that is missing here is the explicit trading of the compass, as in exchanging it for another item or money. This was done both when Jack BOUGHT the compass from Tia Dalma, and when Jack traded the compass away, which in both cases strongly symbolizes the change of ownership. A small detail that could be mentioned here is a moment from the 3rd film. After Jack has negotiated with Beckett, Jack tosses Beckett a fan, and Beckett tosses the compass, which could mean they performed a trade of sorts. This could be seen as Jack being careful and symbolically reinforcing that he is truly the owner of the compass.
he way i see it, previously jack gave up the compass with the intention of getting it back. when he trades it for the rum, he's not trying to get it back he is fully giving it up. which he'd definitely never do even if he was done with everything i feel like
@@verstappen9937 On Stranger Tides is just a watered down version of what came before, and it has Jack Sparrow as the MAIN CHARACTER. HE’S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THE MAIN CHARACTER!!!!
I hated the last couple films because the absence of penti and ragetti characters. These two alone offered so much comedic relief, which was the one of the reasons why pirates of the Caribbean became so watchable.
Exactly! They added a bit more to the story of the first 3 films and I feel like if they came back and were part of the crew in 4 and 5, then those films would have been better. Also, it would have been cool to see them hang out with Mullroy and Murtogg.
YES, Pintel and Ragetti were excellent comic relief characters! Felt a bit like the Laurel and Hardy of the trilogy. Just isn't the same without their antics and character dynamic.
This was the first pirates movie I got to see in cinema, and as a major fan, I was HEAVILY disappointed. Besides Jack, this was the thing that annoyed me most of all; -The wicked wench was never a pirate ship. Jack captained it for the company under the command of Lord Cutler Beckett. After disobeying Beckett's orders, and setting free the 'cargo' i.e. African slaves. Jack gets imprisoned and the Wench gets set on fire. Jack escapes and tries to save the ship in a desperate attempt. Jack goes down with his ship and calls upon Davy Jones to save him and the ship which he renames 'The Black Pearl'. Jack then strikes the 13 year deal with Davy Jones. This is literally the most important piece of backstory for films 2 & 3 and can be found in a canon novel 'The price of freedom' released by DISNEY.
yeah that's what bothered me the most about the origin story scene. the original was literally perfect, him valueing human freedrom over riches is actually very noble and makes you simpathic towards the pirates. both explenations could work if for some reason Jack killed Salazar and ended up working for the literal enemies years later, only to go back to piracy because he didn't like them. maybe being a captain and riches went to his head until confronted with the dilemma?
Honestly his stick is just getting old in the first movie his performance was amazing because just how he moved and spoke was really surprising because audience never really saw Johnny Depp acted like this but as the sequels go on the strangeness gets a bit repetitive even in this movie he is phoning it in .
tbh the fourth one isnt that bad because at the end of the 3rd movie, jack had ripped out the chart and was planning to look for the fountain of youth, but i can understand why it felt left without context because they introduced a bunch of characters out of thin air. i think that to even INCLUDE the fourth one, they shouldve at least changed the end of the 3rd one a bit, introduce the characters in it and modify the fourth movie so that the audience would properly know who angelica is, not just some random girl that appeared in the movie.
Also, jack was the captain of the pearl( wicked wench) long before he was a pirate and he refused to trade slaves and freed them, thus getting marked as a pirate and his ship was burned and sunk. He then bargained with jones to raise the ship. The pearl was always his ship. The teenage jack was so shitty looking and was completely wrong.
you forgot to mention how they literally changed the story about how Sparrow got the pearl/wicked wench. he received it from beckett actually, and then kind off didn't obey him. he didn't get it because it already was a pirate vessel and the previous captain died during a battle.
right, he was the ship's captain and took cargo for beckett but the cargo was people so he defied beckett, who then burned jack's ship and sank it, hence why it is black and why jack made a deal with davy jones to raise it, if i recall rightly?
He’s under a spell that Angelica puts on him. Go watch the very ending and you will see a voodoo doll that Blackbeard made in the likeness of Jack. Jack leaves a very angry Angelica on an island and the voodoo doll washes ashore to her. That’s why Jack Sparrow is going through the trouble in the 5th installment.
Tbh, it would be kinda funny to have Barbossa get resurrected AGAIN. Like not even being irrefutably dead can keep him down for long, and Jack is just seething with envy since his own quest for immortality has been fruitless so far.
Love that u brought up the fact that Tia Dalma was the one who gave him the compass. I like that in the first four ppl only mention Jacks past in passing leaving room for imagination.
Have you guys noticed that 4&5 have the least sword play scenes that involve jack sparrow? It feels like jack becomes a secondary character in his own movies
1)Extraordinary magical events, topics etc. have become so absurd 2) Makeup and costumes spoiled the seriousness. 3) Action scenes became too childish. 4) Bad CGI / Color harmony
+ Henry is a selfish spoiled brat who is ready to screw the balance between life and death by freeing Will of his duty to guide the dead to the afterlife. + Jack Sparrow is character assassinated by being a buffoon who lost all his intelligence and never helps Henry or Carina, and is the one responsible of all the troubles they have with Salazar. + Salazar is a generic villain who can’t even go on land nor his henchmen can’t, thus he isn’t even a big threat.
Gosh I was such a huge fan too. I don't think it was just Jack. You are right about the other characters just being a step up but everything just felt to meh, regardless of Jack being who he is or not. This movie broke the continuity both within itself and within the entire franchise as a whole, not only with the compass but the wicked wench, the Brethren court, and the love story between William Turner and Elizabeth Swann. Okay, so Turner is cursed now. Forget that he is supposed to be the Foyle of Davy Jones because his love actually worked out with Elizabeth. So what about Henry? I just didn't feel the same fire from Henry like what will had for his father bootstrap bill, throughout the movie, although both five and two had equally as emotional scenes between the Fathers and Sons establishing the race to set the fathers free. Carina Smith's story is a very interesting story that they could have done so much with, but it just boiled down to "oh my gosh she's a witch because women can't be smart", which plays into the other issue of the side characters being too bland or generic mwahahaha villains. There just wasn't the same passion with the extras and Side characters as it was in the previous movies where everything felt visceral and real. I mean, apart from the fact that we'll probably never get entire Crews to build entire warehouses of designs to film an epic battle in a maelstrom, or asking a bunch of diverse ethnic people from around the world to film a scene in a cannibal island or an army from Spain or a fight sequence in Singapore ever again. You cannot expect me to believe the extras and side characters, when you have an actual real witch, who blatantly tells you that carina isn't a witch, and they just blow her off even though they look nothing alike. Yes, people were ignorant back then, but were they really that ignorant? Or is there some kind of message that the writers and directors were trying to tell? I guess that's just it. If there was another issue than Jack Sparrow, it would be the massive continuity errors and the fact that everything in this movie is just amazing potential that goes nowhere and is wasted due to poor writing and lack of passion. I mean, just look at how they treat their Supernatural macguffins ! Barbosa has the freaking sword of Triton , but seems to have forgotten about it until he needs to bring the Pearl back conveniently. And who knows what happened to the Queen Anne's Revenge, a ship with plenty of broadside and cannons that can spit fire that burns underwater. And nobody has the same kind of reverence for the Black Pearl apart from a few people cheering that she's back. This is the ship that took on the Flying Dutchman, and joined her to destroy the Endeavor. This is the ship that struck fear for 10 years and earned its reputation as a Supernatural ghost ship, so much so that Blackbeard kept it as one of his prized possessions. And she's just use as a cheap convenient tool for a Epic ship race, in which she already lost to a battleship and a dinghy. They put so much effort with the symbolisms of each of their vessels in the previous films. Like how the Black Pearl is a symbol of freedom and Speedy flight, while the Flying Dutchman and subsequently the Queen Anne's Revenge are symbolisms of bondage through death and / or fear. And what about Gibbs? Are we forgetting that he literally has a supernatural map memorized in his head? Yet like every other side character and extra, he is just as oblivious to how on Earth they are going to be able to find some mysterious island with the Trident, which no one else can find after everything he has been through and knowing what is inside his head. All of this turned me off from the franchise because I know now that they are running out of ideas because of how much they wasted with this fifth movie, and it's very unlikely that we'll have the same impactful adventurous experience with any future films like we did with the first three and even 4
I think they wrote jack so unfavorably intentionally. When the movies have years between them, leaving a distaste in our mouths with jack makes it easier for them to get rid of him
It's like the production team saw how Captain Jack Sparrow cosplayers silly-ran and failed their arms around at conventions and were like "write that down WRITE THAT DOWN!!!" He became a copy of a copy.
Carina or whatever her name was got on my nerves the most. She basically spent the whole movie trying to show how smart she was and how stupid the men were. It was annoying as hell.
@@ywoisug8845 Definitely an annoyance, she kept pulling me out of the film. Barbossa was the best I think. Jack seemed like a drunk the whole time, none of his quick snapbacks or serious moments. Carina was your typical modern day feminist in movies these days, woman smart, man dumb.
I think you're wrong: Jack isn't the only character ruined. There's an awful lot about this movie I despise when it comes to Will Turner. First of all, I really don't understand why he appears all monster-ified in the opening. My reading of the original trilogy is that Jones' monstrous appearance was due to him corrupting the original purpose of the Dutchman: a physical manifestation of the ship fighting how he was commanding it, not merely being the captain of the Dutchman. Hence why the crew return to being human once Jones is defeated, and why Will appears like human in the post-credit scene of AWE (which also raises why he didn't get monsterified in ten years aboard the Dutchman but then did two years after that). The second is the Dutchman itself. It's made explicitly clear in At World's End that the Dutchman must have a captain because it is the ferry for the dead. It's not a cursed ship that binds its captain by magic, it's a part of the natural life-cycle of the world. The captain of the Dutchman is very akin to the Greek mythical figure of Charon: he holds the responsibility to guide the dead to the afterlife. This is why the Dutchman must always a captain, and why Jones not doing the proper role is so dangerous. This also raises the question of what happens now that Will is no longer captain of the Dutchman. The third is admittedly minor, but it does bother me how Poisedon is mentioned in this movie. Wasn't Calypso the goddess of the sea? How are there two gods of the sea, and where is Poesidon? Why does he not care about his trident? Why are pirates, especially those who interacted with Calypso, not questioning this? It may sound like a tiny detail but it bothers me since that is how Will gets freed. The fourth is about the ending. At World's End made a clear effort to bring Will and Elizabeth's story to an end, even featuring a 'x years later' flashforward common to the ending of TV shows and some films. Heck, the last shot before the credits in At World's End features Jack literally sailing toward a sunset. Yes, it was tragic that Will and Elizabeth didn't get their happily ever after, but not everyone does. And they undid it all just to try and tempt fans back to these movies. Regarding Jack, I have to say I really despise him not knowing about Henry. I despise the implication that he never bothered to check up on Elizabeth in the years since the battle of the Malestrom. You'd also think he'd have more of a reaction to Will being back. Honestly, I agree with you about the more movies thing. I don't want another installment of this franchise that has clearly run out of road. I'd much rather we get different movies about pirates that utilise the model of POTC, understanding what made these movies great.
This commentary makes me feel so heard, I quite liked Stranger Tides as it’s a fun film to me, but in dead men tell no tales they butchered Jack’s character completely. Thank you for making this
There's a lot of true pirates of the caribbean fans here that have already pointed all the errors and inconsistencies about this movie but I want to add something. Salazar is a SPANISH captain sailing and hunting pirates for the kingdom of SPAIN, but his ship has an english name "silent mary" instead of a SPANISH name, because you know, maybe the spanish want their ship to have SPANISH name instead of english names idk....
This was legitimately my least favorite movie of all time - truly the biggest work of utter crap I had ever seen in a cinema. (AND I saw it on my birthday to make things worse). I was so exited to see this one, and it just left me feeling so empty. The first three Pirates films were the biggest part of my childhood - they literally shaped most of my personality and went on to be some of my favorite movies - ever. This video perfectly encapsulates some of the biggest gripes I had. Every facet of this movie got things so utterly wrong that I can't help but hate it.. obviously there are some movies worse than this one out there - but this will remain my all time most hated movie till the bloody sun burns out. Thanks for the vid :)
Same here, first three will always be in my heart and i watched them all immediately when they were released, i was 6 year old when first was released. I wasn't ever exited 4th or 5th, most of the time when you end a story and continue it anyway it will be crap
Same. I think the villain was okay though but everything else was very mediocre at best. The dialogue was shit, Jack wasn't even jack, the character development was non existent, the whole movie was such a let down preceded with such unjustified hype.
People are trying to get Johnny depp back into the pirates movies, but I think it’s for the best that Johnny stays away this time, even when they offer his job back. Cause 4 and 5 did not go well, and a sixth movie would not go well and would just drag the good name Johnny depp, and the troublemaker with a heart of gold captain jack sparrow. Unless the story is actually well written.
I think the fact that Jack just happens to already be in the huge safe (with the governors wife) drunk as ever, is skill enough to make up for how he luckily gets pulled away. Idk that’s just me though😂
I actually liked the first 4 films, the 4th film at least feels like a Pirates of The Caribbean movie, and I don't like any of the characters in the 5th film
29:23 Okay, there are definitely things that don't make sense with the trident, but that is NOT one of them. Yes, both Salazar and Barbossa were cursed to be immortal undead beings, but there was something different when Barbossa was brought back: HE WAS SHOT! The same thing magic-wise happened to both of them, but nothing happened to Salazar.
For me, this movie has some really good IDEAS, but the fact that whole thing hinges on a RETCON is what really kills it…just have Salazar be released organically, remove any connection to the compass, and fix Jack’s writing at LEAST, and you’ve got a movie that should be at least DECENT
For a small RUclipsr who doesn't get many views this is an absolutely brilliant video, editing is top top notch was watching and thought u had 200k+ subs keep the content like this coming bro one will pop of trust, pirates lotr hunger games all that stuff cooks for views.
My least favorite part about this movie upon rewatching was that they completely forgot barbossa had the sword of triton outside of him bringing the pearl back. Like this shit is an insanely powerful mythical weapon and yet it's not used like it is in on stranger tides at all.
I was going to be an extra in this film. Signed contracts, the whole thing, ready to go until it fell through last minute and I couldn't do it. Was incredibly sad about it... Until the film came out.
Black pearl is one of the best adventure films to me. Dead man’s chest is really stuffed but I think the Davy Jones ploy that is the main plot is brilliant. At worlds ends first and last act are great but second act is a slog On stranger tides is weird to me. I don’t think it’s a good movie it’s a 4/10 but I always seem to watch it the most? I dunno why I always have fun with it tho. If you just want a fun movie night to stuff popcorn in ur Face ID say it’s good for that. One underrated thing abt that film is the music the music is the best in the franchise if u don’t believe me listen to the soundtrack you’ll see what I mean
To me after the Will & Elizabeth storyline wrapped up in 3, I had a hard time being invested in 4 and 5. I’m interested in watching your video and hearing more of your thoughts.
There are only a handful of decent/rewatchable elements from movies 4 &5... 1. The escape from the King and Barbossa in PotC OST 2. The Spanish destruction of the Fountain of Youth 3. The first 2/3s of the Young Jack flashback with Salazar; everything in the last 1/3 that broke canon sucked... 4. Barbossa's death and reveal to his daughter 5. Will's reunion with Elisabeth (despite the fact that they ignore his heart being in a box in Elizabeth's bedroom and he should have died the moment his link to the Flying Dutchman was broken. Idk, maybe Calypso took mercy on him and magically teleported his heart back into his body since she always seemed ro like him, but she apparently also brought Davy Jones back to life which seems to contradict that...)
Barbossa's development doesn't make any sense. In the 1st film he's REALLY violent, mainly towards Elizabeth. At the end of DMC, he magically reapears to save the day. And somehow he's now cooperating with people who were his enemies before his death? Ok lmao... Then obviously he doesn't become friends with Jack and sails away with the Pearl. Why does Jack's crew betray him btw? Whatever. Then in OST, he becomes quite cruel again, letting the royal navy's get sunk by the mermaids for example. My problem with Barbossa as a captain in general is that while he is a great leader, he doesn't give 2 fcks about his crew members, so it doesn't make sense to me that someone is loyal to him at all. In the 5th film this happens again - he lets the dead absolutely slaughter his crew... But on the other hand he kinda becomes good, saves Jack and shows love towards his long lost daughter and sacrifices himself for her... Seriously Barbossa's development makes ZERO sense :((( *also at the end of AWE, how is it that Jack lets Barbossa sail away with the Pearl😭😭😭 that's SO frustrating i hate it
I 100% do not blame Johnny depp for his performance in this film. I would say it’s definitely the bad script writing and storytelling the timing of the film and the Amber heard trial. We just needed to cut him some slack
Um no Corina is what has stopped me twice from ever completely watching this movie a second time. Trash character and they just destroyed the core of Jack for no reason. Fuck this movie. Terrible plot execution, zero payoff, destroys characters, bland dialogue, felt like some bad filler fanfiction, and poorly rehashes scenarios and tropes. To call the characters better is just ridiculous, but sure I do agree it is the worst.
I rewrote this whole movie for fun once. The rewrite involved Carina actually letting Henry be killed in that one scene, which caused Will to finally decide to involve himself in the Salazar situation. That was the basic premise.
Now that I think about it, he should have intervened to stop Salazar. Just because he’s cursed doesn’t mean he’s useless. Davy Jones was cursed and even he could do whatever he wanted except walk on land. It’s completely wrong and out of character to not help his son. I mean what was he even doing? Was he literally just napping and lying around the entire film and didn’t bother to check on his son? Henry nearly died several times and Will doesn’t even care? You are a terrible father Will😡😡
@@GRogers4097 Yeah he could have, at any point, just come up and helped Henry. I don’t think he would have been adverse to doing that even if it meant he suffered physical consequences because he loves Henry and Elizabeth very much, even more than his own well-being atp I’d imagine because as shown in the start of this movie he’s kind of being consumed by the life he’s been doomed to. Also his whole thing is people who die at sea and Salazar and his crew died at sea so even if Henry wasn’t part of the equation wouldn’t he still get involved 😭
Those are diferent cases: -Jack becomes a mooron instead of a intelligent man acting like a mooron -Hulk just looses his strengh, and his intimidation factor, everything made him hulk😊
There is only one thing that I believe would warrant a Pirates of the Caribbean 6 - The death of Captain Jack Sparrow. He needs to die and not come back. Obviously, he has to be given the proper send-off. He needs to die with honour and he needs to have a good reason to die via sacrificing himself or something. He also needs to sink with his beloved Black Pearl. Jack can go out in the way he would want and he will achieve the immortality he always wanted - the immortality of a legend.
Even after all these years I'm still extremely disappointed with how they handled the Dead Man Tell No Tales. They absolutely butchered Jack as a character it just felt off-putting compared to the rest. At least part 4 was somewhat a cohesive story but this one is just milking an old cow dry.
Barbossa is my favorite character, he's the best villain in my opinion, And I hate it to see him to die in this film, He should've just stuck with the Aztek Curse.
i watched this movie only once in theaters and never again that’s how much it pissed me off. it’s an absolute disgrace to the pirates franchise. the writing is abysmal, i can’t believe johnny agreed to play such an idiotic version of jack.
Perfect fucking video. Well crafted and really felt your sharing frustration. And my god I hope The Rock does NOT replace Depp in POTC6... (no disrespect to the actor)
It’s the opposite for me. 4 was a refreshing new adventure with a good story to tell. This one has zero effort put into it. The script is messy, the action is sloppy, the acting is tired, the direction is poorly executed. Most of the soundtrack and visuals as well as set designs and scenery are few of the decent things about this film
Having grown up and watched these movies several times the only mental cope I have for Dead Men's Jack is that he had been extremely depressed for losing his ship for too long
The best part of seeing this film in theaters for me was when there was a belligerent drunk man in the audience who got up and blocked the screen, they had to stop the movie and remove him. After that they resumed it and we got free ticket vouchers for whatever movie we wanted which I used for Blade Runner 2049, so Blade Runner and a drunk man were the highlights of this movie to me
I heard an analogy that Jack Sparrow is like salt: He's a great add-on and oftentimes the salt is the best aspect. Even if the food is bad, salt can improve it. On Stranger Tides was a little bit over salted due to the lack of Turner to balance Jack out. Dead Men Tell No Tales is just a bad dish, and criminally under salted.
I agree with that scene showing a younger Jack and when he got Salazar killed, that retcon pissed me off. But ive seen theories that people say since Tia Dalma never states WHEN Jack bartered the conpass off her, he may have offered it as tribute to his old captain when he joined the Wicked Wench crew, not knowing what it was. Very unlikely as its more likely they just forgot their own story and lore, but would be interesting to say the least. As at the time of giving up the compass to his old captain as tribute, he may have not had a "greatest fear" that it could awake
Lol- such a great breakdown of the movie, the part where you scream about signing the petition made me literally lol…and yes…I did sign ;). Well done. New sub. Keep ‘‘em coming.
I paused this at the bit where he said you dont know if hes planned it or making it up as he goes. I have a third option. He knows what he wants, his goal. The means in which he achieves said goal are completely improv. Hes the walking military saying of "plans are useless, but planning is essential."
I saw the concept trailer for the 6th film and nearly died when I heard, "My father, Captain Jack Sparrow..." Bruh... Excellent points in this video, btw. I agree with pretty much everything you said. The 4th and 5th films felt like money milking films, instead of films that told a story like the first three.
Honestly with the context of the flashback scene, where he seems very much like classic Jack sparrow, I think it’s pretty easy to make up the head canon that present day Jack is in universe just not what he used to be, he’s in a slump and somehow even more of a drunk than he was before. In my head, he is intentionally less competent and starting to feel his many years.
Jack was hardly the only terrible part of the move. The retcon with the compass' origin is just where I start. There is also the retcon with Will turning into a sea creature like Davey Jones became, the reason that Jones became like that was because he wasn't doing the duty of ferrying souls, Will _is_ doing that duty so should not be devolving like that. The original idea was that in doing his duty properly and having Elizabeth wait for him (unlike Calypso not doing for Jones) he would be freed after ten years, probably with his Father Bootstrap taking over the duty like the true man of the sea that he is. This sloppy retcon combined with the bad setup for the whole plot just deletes the beauty of the original trilogy's implication and says "nah, we can do better" (they couldn't). Uh, how exactly was Carina conceived when Barbossa spent most of the timeframe either undead or _actually_ dead? The running joke about how Carina must be a witch for being able to _use sea charts like any sailor in this or any other time period would be capable of._ is incredibly tired and poorly thought out. The idea that the Compass would unleash your greatest fear if you betray it makes *no* sense whatsoever, in the second and third films it swaps hands constantly for Jack's convenience. Why would Salazar's ship be Jack's biggest fear anyway, after he destroyed it why would he even need to ponder on it again, it was very old news. How was the ship cursed like that in the first place. The whole plot was just such a mess of retcons and bad writing... ... (and they did Jack's character dirty.)
There is one explanation why Jack is so bad and everything is going wrong for him. When Barbossa meets the witch she says: "Haven't I cursed all of your enemies with bad luck?" Even Jack's crew mention after failed bank job "It seems your luck has finally ran out".
I hated this movie because it commits the ultimate sins of being boring. Sure, it has funny scenes, but that doesn't save the movie. Barbossa and Jack and Gibs were really the only characters to come out of it okay. It's not like there wasn't a ton of problems, but I would argue the worse part of the movie was seeing Johnny Depp being destroyed by Amber Heard on the film. Like, you can so see his personal issues right there on the screen. Depressing really.
Jack in this movie is what Jack PRETENDS to be in the previous movies... In the first three movies Jack was a drunk idiot who was secretly cunning and clever, but in this movie he's just a drunk idiot.
It really felt like the writers just never watched the first 3 pirates movies. They hadn't seen any, and said, "i should probably watch the last one, get the state of the world". There was a good movie buried in there somewhere, unfortunately that just wasn't the one we got.
Technically it's not fan service having those two guards be part of Barbosa's crew because they pretended to be part of his crew at the end of Dead Man's Chest
Technically it was At World’s End where they joined his crew. But presumably, according to On Stranger Tides, they would’ve been massacred along with Pintel and Ragetti and all the other classic crew members when Blackbeard attacked The Black Pearl, leaving Barbossa (and Jack the monkey) as the only survivors.
Why don't you make a video essay explaining how you would've written Barbossa in the 5th film?
Fully agreed. The crown served me well, but now by the gods of sea and tide, make way for Tortuga!
There is so much wrong with this movie. There is the very uncharacteristic Jack Sparrow, the complete unlogical plot in regards to the previous movies, the changing of prior plot (like Jack getting the compass from Calypso and not from a random sailor) and so much more.
At least the bank heist was funny
For me, Pirates of the Caribbean is a Trilogy + 1 Spinoff
@Sherry Extra Dry If I remember correctly, he only could return for one day every 10 years. What I found weird though is that he and his crew on the Dutchman slowly changed into monsters. I don't think that Will wouldn't do his duty of laying dead sailors to rest. Also, Davy Jones also entered land to meet Jack and Co. So Will could see his sun a lot more often, if he wanted to, right?
@@OurLadyofPerpetualVictimhoodNah, that’s still good. The Dutchman’s captain can get on land once every decade.
@@oberlurch-handimations8628 I always took that as they are slowly turning because they can't possibly ferry every single that soul that dies at sea, there's just too many.
It’s not a random sailor. It was his captain. He was most likely the first mate.
Something the 4th and 5th movie can't give us, a lot of awesome ship battles.
Both films gave us two of the most fearsome and awesome ships in the series and yet they don’t do any ship-to-ship battles…
It honestly frustrates me how good this movie could have been if just a few things were handled better.
@@malickfan7461true. The ideas are great, but the execution was horrible.
Not to mention they literally discard the _Revenge_ completely. Such an infamous ship and it just gets thrown out to sea.
That’s only speculation
It's called being an actor, not "alcoholic" 😂😂
@@barborajezkova8393 You say that yet coincidentally this actor was also an alcoholic during a big portion of these movies timeline. Doesn't take away from his ability as we all know he is a phenomenal actor, unfortunately if it weren't for the bottle (and of course the false allegations) he could still be involved, though I do think he is better off nowadays, especially disney completely burning their bridge so we will most likely never see him again as Jack, though he did say if enough of his fans wanted it then he would consider it again
@@barborajezkova8393Or it’s “Method” acting.
Then again, business is allergic to good art, so it makes sense
it was not Johnny's fault. he said himself on the trial that script was terrible written and he had to do a lot of re-writing...
I think that was Disney's thinking, "let's butcher the character so badly that no one will miss him in the next one" 😒
Yeah Salazar's design is spectacular....if Davy Jones didn't exist that is
The best line in stranger tides was after jack dived from the lighthouse …” now did everybody see that because I won’t be doing it again”…dunno why but it gets me every time.
This could be seen as Jack being careful and symbolically reinforcing that he is truly the owner of the compass.
he way i see it, previously jack gave up the compass with the intention of getting it back.
when he trades it for the rum, he's not trying to get it back he is fully giving it up. which he'd definitely never do even if he was done with everything i feel like
All I want in this movie is THE REAL JACK SPARROW
I think no one will disagree with it
I disagree with it

On Stranger Tides is worse
@@SDfan2002t’s just not, on strangers tides is actually quite good
@@verstappen9937 On Stranger Tides is just a watered down version of what came before, and it has Jack Sparrow as the MAIN CHARACTER.
Sadly I think it’s implied they died when Blackbeard sunk the Pearl. That or they escaped to a faraway island somewhere or Tortuga
This was the first pirates movie I got to see in cinema, and as a major fan, I was HEAVILY disappointed. Besides Jack, this was the thing that annoyed me most of all;
-The wicked wench was never a pirate ship. This is literally the most important piece of backstory for films 2 & 3 and can be found in a canon novel 'The price of freedom' released by DISNEY.
did he go down with the ship? davy jones never mentions that, whenever they talk about their deal, they mention only the ship
@@TheHowlingEyejack was probably like one of the sailors at his mercy like in Davy jones intro scene
yeah that's what bothered me the most about the origin story scene. the original was literally perfect, him valueing human freedrom over riches is actually very noble and makes you simpathic towards the pirates.
both explenations could work if for some reason Jack killed Salazar and ended up working for the literal enemies years later, only to go back to piracy because he didn't like them. maybe being a captain and riches went to his head until confronted with the dilemma?
The acting from Johnny in this movie was great for what they were going for, but what they were going for was shit.
Honestly his stick is just getting old in the first movie his performance was amazing because just how he moved and spoke was really surprising because audience never really saw Johnny Depp acted like this but as the sequels go on the strangeness gets a bit repetitive even in this movie he is phoning it in .
Barbosa has always been my favourite parts of the films.
tbh the fourth one isnt that bad because at the end of the 3rd movie, jack had ripped out the chart and was planning to look for the fountain of youth, but i can understand why it felt left without context because they introduced a bunch of characters out of thin air. i think that to even INCLUDE the fourth one, they shouldve at least changed the end of the 3rd one a bit, introduce the characters in it and modify the fourth movie so that the audience would properly know who angelica is, not just some random girl that appeared in the movie.
Ret con
right, he was the ship's captain and took cargo for beckett but the cargo was people so he defied beckett, who then burned jack's ship and sank it, hence why it is black and why jack made a deal with davy jones to raise it, if i recall rightly?
In my opinion barbossa was always a better and fun to watch character compared to jack so i didn’t mind this film.
POTC 5 writers making Captain Jack Sparrow's character:
- haha drunk pirate funny
- haha goofy talk funny
- haha Johnny Depp scream funny
- depression
He’s under a spell that Angelica puts on him. Go watch the very ending and you will see a voodoo doll that Blackbeard made in the likeness of Jack. Jack leaves a very angry Angelica on an island and the voodoo doll washes ashore to her. That’s why Jack Sparrow is going through the trouble in the 5th installment.
Just wait for 6.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Captain Barbossa may need glasses
Tbh, it would be kinda funny to have Barbossa get resurrected AGAIN. Like not even being irrefutably dead can keep him down for long, and Jack is just seething with envy since his own quest for immortality has been fruitless so far.
Love that u brought up the fact that Tia Dalma was the one who gave him the compass. I like that in the first four ppl only mention Jacks past in passing leaving room for imagination.
Have you guys noticed that 4&5 have the least sword play scenes that involve jack sparrow? It feels like jack becomes a secondary character in his own movies
4 had quite a bit of sword play, what are you talking about?
They aren’t his movies, he was never the main character
1)Extraordinary magical events, topics etc. have become so absurd
2) Makeup and costumes spoiled the seriousness.
3) Action scenes became too childish.
4) Bad CGI / Color harmony
Are you talking about the first four films?
All of this turned me off from the franchise because I know now that they are running out of ideas because of how much they wasted with this fifth movie, and it's very unlikely that we'll have the same impactful adventurous experience with any future films like we did with the first three and even 4
he didnt have the entire map memorized i think, just the map for the fountain. Maybe a few other things if they wanted to stretch things.
I think they wrote jack so unfavorably intentionally. When the movies have years between them, leaving a distaste in our mouths with jack makes it easier for them to get rid of him
It's like the production team saw how Captain Jack Sparrow cosplayers silly-ran and failed their arms around at conventions and were like "write that down WRITE THAT DOWN!!!"
He became a copy of a copy.
THERE ARE ONLY 3 PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN MOVIES ! THE 4TH ONE IS A NICE ADDITION TO THE COLLECTION, OKAY ?
The 4th one was not that good but okay
Carina or whatever her name was got on my nerves the most. She basically spent the whole movie trying to show how smart she was and how stupid the men were. It was annoying as hell.
Exactly, I have no idea how he can consider her to be a "Good part of the film". She was annoying, obnoxious, and cliche.
Right? I prefer Angelica over her any day. Angelic is cunning, manipulative and a liar. Carina has a case of poor writing
Tbh 4 was the kinda last one that followed the full franchise plot and the 5th one was just a movie to make money and that’s it had no real interest
Thank you for making this
This movie makes On Stranger Tides look like a good movie in comparison.
The dialogue was shit, Jack wasn't even jack, the character development was non existent, the whole movie was such a let down preceded with such unjustified hype.
it was not Johnny's fault. he said himself on the trial that script was terrible written and he had to do a lot of re-writing...
4 was meh but 5 was just genuinely underwhelming and lacklustre
His performance in both movies was awful too, though.
Personally, I think 4 and 5 should be decanonized and if the writers can make a good story, remake 4
No one would have complained if the series ended at world ends
Jack sparrow will still be a character in pirates 6… he’s going to be ruined
This movie was hurtful to watch
If memory serves me right Tia Dalma gave Jack the compass, how come they changed that now
If there is a 6th movie. It needs to be about the sea of thieves. Since that's cannon apparently
he will get belly slammed by the pirate lord and die 😢
Ngl I didn't really like the twist that Karina was Barbosa's daughter
It felt so random and out of the blue
‘What the f*ck is the name of Will and Elizabeth’s forgettable ass son?’ Made me laugh so hard 😂
Fun fact this movie was just a set up for the 6th film that would’ve had Davy jones come back to life and wanting revenge on jack.
At worlds ends first and last act are great but second act is a slog
On stranger tides is weird to me.
5 tho is horrible I didn’t even know it existed till the other month and I was really excited and man it was shocking
What do you mean by sttufed?
To me after the Will & Elizabeth storyline wrapped up in 3, I had a hard time being invested in 4 and 5. I’m interested in watching your video and hearing more of your thoughts.
There are only a handful of decent/rewatchable elements from movies 4 &5...
1. The escape from the King and Barbossa in PotC OST
2. The Spanish destruction of the Fountain of Youth
3. The first 2/3s of the Young Jack flashback with Salazar; everything in the last 1/3 that broke canon sucked...
4. Barbossa's death and reveal to his daughter
We can blame Disney for such a terrible story. They even alternated how Jack obtained his compass.
Seriously Barbossa's development makes ZERO sense :(((
*also at the end of AWE, how is it that Jack lets Barbossa sail away with the Pearl😭😭😭 that's SO frustrating i hate it
The compass is connected to Salazar because if you betray the compass, it will release your worst fear. For Jack it was Salazar. Pay attention.
This movie would've been exponentially better if Jack wasn't Captain Drunk Sparrow
18:32 the amount of emotion he showed when saying that line
Most of the ‘good’ stuff appeared in the trailers, that’s when you know the studio thought it was a stinker.
It's still a pirates film. Which means that the CGI is a banger.
I hope jack sparrow not becoming weak character like Hulk nowadays.
Bring back the Real Jack Sparrow and Hulk .
Those are diferent cases:
-Jack becomes a mooron instead of a intelligent man acting like a mooron
-Hulk just looses his strengh, and his intimidation factor, everything made him hulk😊
Everybody loves Jack Sparrow for manipulating his way to success. But if I do it I'm a "psychopath" and "need to seek help".
I feel and agree with every cursing, every heavy grunts of this man. Truly detailed analysis
Even after all these years I'm still extremely disappointed with how they handled the Dead Man Tell No Tales. They absolutely butchered Jack as a character it just felt off-putting compared to the rest. At least part 4 was somewhat a cohesive story but this one is just milking an old cow dry.
Hi, this is SUCH a good review!!
And so I think you're right, the 6th movie should be the in-between story focusing purely on Jack and his adventures
If only there was the sixth one
Barbossa is my favorite character, he's the best villain in my opinion, And I hate it to see him to die in this film, He should've just stuck with the Aztek Curse.
i watched this movie only once in theaters and never again that’s how much it pissed me off. it’s an absolute disgrace to the pirates franchise. the writing is abysmal, i can’t believe johnny agreed to play such an idiotic version of jack.
At the time, Johnny had way more going on with him, and it wasn’t good. (AH) Now I understand why his heart simply wasn’t in it in this one
Finally, I’ve noticed the retcon with jacks compass and every other RUclips video I’ve watched about this movie didn’t mention it.
I don't care I grew up with these movies and I enjoy every single one of them they were all great
Perfect fucking video. Well crafted and really felt your sharing frustration. And my god I hope The Rock does NOT replace Depp in POTC6... (no disrespect to the actor)
Honestly the fourth one was such a disconnected unnecessary cash grab I never even bothered with this one
Having grown up and watched these movies several times the only mental cope I have for Dead Men's Jack is that he had been extremely depressed for losing his ship for too long
I feel like the directors just read the wiki pages of the POTC series instead of actually watching them.
They ruined Jack by making him drunk throughout the film. I miss the funny genius like he was in the first 3
I agree with that scene showing a younger Jack and when he got Salazar killed, that retcon pissed me off.
Me: Pirates can we have Will Turner?
Pirates: we have Will Turner at home
And yet people still want a sequel
I saw the concept trailer for the 6th film and nearly died when I heard, "My father, Captain Jack Sparrow..." Bruh... Excellent points in this video, btw. I agree with pretty much everything you said. The 4th and 5th films felt like money milking films, instead of films that told a story like the first three.
20:15 He also has mastered the art of saying whatever the hell he's looking at. "Monkey!", "Shark?"
Clicked off when I heard "Carina is a good character" lmfao
When Barbossa meets the witch she says: "Haven't I cursed all of your enemies with bad luck?" Even Jack's crew mention after failed bank job "It seems your luck has finally ran out".
congrats on 600 subs 🥳
Thanks bro :))
Just imagine if barrbossa was still cursed, that would have been epic
It really felt like the writers just never watched the first 3 pirates movies. They hadn't seen any, and said, "i should probably watch the last one, get the state of the world". There was a good movie buried in there somewhere, unfortunately that just wasn't the one we got.
Technically it's not fan service having those two guards be part of Barbosa's crew because they pretended to be part of his crew at the end of Dead Man's Chest
It would've been true fan service if it was Pintel and Raghetti.
they converted/defected after seeing the corruption of The System since the governor became a puppet for the trading company under beckett
Richie, i am hooked on your channel and this is an A+ video. Thank you.
