@@shelleyball6216 That's awesome. Use a wire brush to scrub. You can take a large onion cut in to, to scrub on the metal as well. Once clean spray with cooking oil. It's a good idea to keep them covered with a sheet of metal or fiberglass sheet to help keep it from euating.

Not to find any fault, but if that expanded metal is galvanized, you may be in for some problems. Galvanizing gives off very toxic fumes when heated. I have seen many welders with zinc poisoning. Never knew it to be fatal, but it ain't nuttin nice, if you got it. In the old days, on construction jobs, they just told them to drink milk before they welded on it...not much help. Nowadays, they are allowed to grind the galvanizing off before they make the weld. Still wear dust masks, though. Welders HATE to weld galvanized pipe supports, structural beams, etc. Junk iron, they call it. Just food for thought...I don't know at what temperature the fumes start; hell, you may be okay on a pit. Obviously, welding arcs produce a lot more heat than wood or charcoal.....just a heads up. Nice pit, at any rate.
    Thanks

I made one of these about 1/3 biger when we put a pool in 20 years ago. We had lots of pool parties w lots of guest and I would smoke some of the finest brisket n pork butts you ever had. Mine was fully enclosed w metal vent doors on each end one low and the other side high, had a fabrication shop build me a lid so I could smoke low n slow. I'm retired now those days are behind me but the food I laid out was endless on that cinder block smoker.
Guys if you have any common sense you won't wast your money on a high dollar computerized smoker. You will go through several of them while your cinder block smoker will still be there long after the kids go off to college. I called it my "hillbilly smoker".
Now days I'll crack open a beer and hang out just me n my smoker and reminisce about all the fun my family n friends had around that smoker n pool.

    • @THEREALSHOWBBQ

Steve, you get the very best flavor this was. This is THE way to barbque. Just use a small amount of charcoal to get the oak/hickory wood started and let it burn down a bit before starting. Keep the hose handy to cool the fire if needed.

I still have the house I grew up in (which is vacant now and needs to be repaired) and relatives there. If things get a little better, I might go in July/August.
After seeing your video, I am definitely going to build this pit according to your layout.
How much does the cinder blocks and caps normally run? I know they are not cheat.
