A great talk. Dr. Lisa Miller’s The Awakened Brain is a profoundly insightful exploration of the vital connection between psychology and spirituality. As we face an era marked by increasing social disaffection, mental and emotional health challenges, polarization, and a pervasive distrust in institutions, her work serves as a beacon of hope.
Dr. Miller’s research underscores the transformative power of religiosity and spiritual transcendence in fostering resilience, meaning, and human flourishing. This groundbreaking contribution not only enriches the field of psychology but also reminds us of the enduring importance of nurturing our spiritual selves in navigating life’s complexities. A must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the mind, heart, and soul.

I understand now my reservations for this. Not necessarily this womans presentation specifically but the whole restore symposium. This is progressivism.

What happened 40 years ago that we threw religious and spiritual life out of the public square?

Absolutely love “The Awakened Brain” and struggled with it at the same time. I love the basic message and could not agree more with the prescription that you offer for the crisis of meaning that plagues us. What I would love to hear more from you is an acknowledgment of a much broader definition of “spiritual” than you allow for. It feels like you often “tack on” other forms of spirituality, outside of a religious context, but your bias towards organized religion comes through pretty strongly. You lose a lot of us with your use of the word “God”, even though you often hint at an expanded definition (higher power, etc). For some of us atheist, materialist types, even that is a bridge too far. Spirituality is so much bigger than faith, religion, and concepts of god.

That's your experience. Let her have her experience. She's offering you that freedom. Offer the same to her. You don't need to copy her. She's giving you her study to do with it what you will.
