The ending of the Mazeppa paraphrase is so EPIC! It’s also my favorite Tchaikovsky paraphrase finale.
It's extremely good but still not as good as Rachmaninoff's - perhaps the greatest piano miniature recomposition ever written.
My understanding is that besides Safanov, Medtner had also studied with Pabst. Listening to this, that makes sense.
