I don't think anyone expected Megaman: The Wily Wars (especially after years of having to struggle with the craptastic PAL standard UK release ROM or just getting the proper Japanese Rockman: Wily Tower ROM and not being able to read any story elements in exchange for the correct gameplay speed). I don't think anything is off the table. Now something that IS pretty unlikely? If there is a Segasaturn Mini, we probably won't be seeing anything that required the use of the ROM cartridge (Ultraman, King of Fighters 95), the MPEG card (Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete), or the 1MB/3MB/4MB RAM cartridges (X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Vampire Savior/Darkstalkers 3, Street Fighter ZERO3/Alpha 3, The King of Fighters 96-97, etc). Unless they DO include one of'em and a replica RAM card as an accessory...but I doubt that.

Not to be picky, but the packaging is based on the original packaging from 1989 and the grid layout used on the box is totally an 80s style. Now I will say when I got my original on Christmas Eve 1989 that it looked very futuristic, the packaging with the bold large graphics, and the sleek black look, and the rounded off controller, it was very impressive. Also when I hooked it up to my TV and saw the graphics I was stunned, I literally didn't think my TV could do graphics that well. Keep in mind in 1989 there were no in store displays for the Genesis and I don't recall very much advertising at all - I only knew about it from going to the video rental store and they had a new magazine there called Electronic Gaming Monthly, and it had the Ghouls N Ghosts cover - and those tiny screen shots were all you had to go on. Toys R Us had a very small area where you could buy the system once it was released - but also keep in mind back then there were amazingly no release dates for systems - you'd literally just go to the store and see if it was there. Anyways seeing the box reminded me of that, but mainly the reference to it looking very 90s - and thus the legend of the Genesis, it's a pure 1980s system that was ahead of it's time.
I agree with you, but I think that disparity in memory is just the product of the fact that *most* consumers didn't really become aware of the Genesis or the Mega-Drive until Sonic the Hedgehog became popular, and that was a few years later in the early 90s. I was, like you, one of the people who bought the original package (which did indeed resemble this one, with the grid background) that came with "Altered Beast." The reason I was confident enough to buy a Genesis, so early in the run, was because I was already a Master System fan, and I was able to get a Power Base Converter. So that meant that with the "backwards compatibility" (a word I would not have heard when I was 14 in 1989) I had an instant library of games to play that were already showing up cheap on the used marketplace (which is to say, the back of the school-bus). I remember when the SNES came out a few years later ppl were all buzzed about it and I was like, eh, I already had a better system than that 3 years ago.
IMHO, the top advantages of mini consoles are: 1. Great for affordably playing retro games for a system one may no longer own. Super stoked for the TurboGrafx Mini. I never owned one, and it is a treasure trove of lesser known platformers, shooters, and RPGs. 2. Mini consoles are excellent for gaming while traveling. 3. They are fantastic for playing games which originally had a battery back-up in the cartridge - being that most of those internal batteries have long since died. Sooo great to play retro RPGs such as Link to the Past, Final Fantasy III (aka VI), and Phantasy Star IV with the ability to save at any moment to system memory. BUT, mini consoles NEED to evolve and include features such as a functional cartridge slot (would be a phenomenal capability for those of us with big game collections) and/or the ability to officially download MORE games from an online eshop, Virtual Console-style.
changing the language doesn't just change the look of the box art. it changes some of the games too. one example is contra: hard corps. the japanese version gives you a 3 hit life bar and unlimited continues instead of the one hit kills and limited continues. great attention to detail. pretty cool.
also.... I have just recently discovered that if you change the language to any European script, it will now play *all* European ROMs that you might choose to import or play on a flash drive through a mod. Now, my life is complete -- not only can I play "Alien Soldier" on the Sega Mini, but I can finally discover the joys of 16-bit cricket simulation with "Brian Lara Cricket."

they should have put it with a 6 buttons instead. My SNES consoles and games got stolen. I saved enough money and got a Genesis. Afterward, I got SF2 Champion Edition only to realize that the 3 buttons controller sucks. Then they have 6 buttons. Ever since then, I just hook up the 6 buttons and play it from there. I don't know why they didn't included the 6 buttons instead of the 3 buttons. This is one negative of this Genesis classic min.
I'm hoping the Magic-NS Mayflash adapter is made compatible with the Genesis mini. That way I can use other alternative controllers that have more buttons. Heck, I can piss off everyone from the 90's by connecting a Wii remote with a SNES Classic controller and play Genesis games.
@@Zarflame99_Alt yes, and the ps3's RAM was split not only on the hardware side but also on the software side. developers had to jump through hoops in order to use both ram chips (a portion of one was reserved for the OS of course) which lead to issues with textures in some engines. also the weird RAM setup was also the reason the PS3 never got system wide party chat.
Nice intro. XD My older brother and I started off as Sega kids with the Genesis and despite the Mini not having Rocket Knight Adventures, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, or some of the more obscure licensed games we loved, it has Castle of Illusion, Streets of Rage 2, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Contra: Hard Corps, and Mega Man. So, I'm already planning to surprise my family with this console when it arrives from UPS in Sept.
Wish had the Batman Returns, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Hard Drivin, Terminator 1- 2, and T2 Arcade game, Robocop vs Terminator, TMNT Hyperstone Heist, TMNT Tournament Fighters, VR Troopers, MMPR, MMPR the movie, Ms Pac Man, NBA Jam, Terrican, Universal Soldier, Two Crude Dudes. To name few of my other favorite genesis games. Hoping it can be expanded or hacked easily eventually!
I actually think Sega has been making a comeback for a while. Of course in terms of new consoles they haven't but if you think about the Sega classic games being available on other platforms like PS4 and Nintendo Switch. They are still very much in the picture and now they get another life with their new retro console. Sega is back !

I haven't figured out how to run master system games on the Mini yet, but it really *should* be possible and easy, considering that the Genesis itself is really just a souped-up version of the master system and it uses all the same basic hardware (unlike the Saturn & Dreamcast which are truly new systems). That's why the Power Base Converter was able to run master system games on the genesis without any kind of alteration other than just a simple cartridge converter.
I own an SNES/NES classic, and I got a power brick with both of them. Also, I'm so getting a Genesis mini! I hope it's hackable, so I can put Sonic 3 and Knuckles on it.

Not happening. Dreamcast is comparable to ps2 and ps2 isn't easy to emulate on cheap hardware, and nobody would buy a console emulator for 200-300 dollars
@@MacMan2152 Saturn emulation is difficult for the same reasons that it was difficult to program for in the first place: the chip layout was more complex on the Saturn than the PlayStation, and thus trying to emulate what they were doing is more complex. I don't believe that any emulators for it have reached the level of refinement that has been attained for the NES, SNES, MD/Genesis, and PlayStation, but it certainly should be doable though.
@@ostiariusalpha i have a saturn emulator on my pc and it runs games such as radiant silvergun and panzer dragoon perfectly. This is unofficial stuff, I'm pretty sure people who've made the saturn would be able to do this even better.
@@MacMan2152 The people that built the Saturn are long since retired, and none of them were experts on emulation programming. Being "official" confers literally zero expertise; as shown by Sony's release of the PlayStation Classic. Nintendo, Sega, and Konami have all turned to outside contractors for emulation on their mini consoles. Whichever emulator you happen to use will play some Saturn games nearly perfect, but will have issues on others. This is a problem that both amateur and professional emulators have not yet overcome.
The menu selection sound was done by Yu Suzuki. In the Japanese show that revealed the last 12 games (they had announcements before that for 30 games prior), Yu Suzuki was one of the featured guests. He explained that he couldn't fit all the music he wanted into the game selection screen due to memory constraints so he added 16 bit sound effects into the menu. The "bong" sound which bothers you has the Yu Suzuki touch! :-)
It should be noted that not only do you get the different box art with each language selection, the games are also from that region. So with Japanese selected, you get games like the Japanese version of Contra Hard Corps. Pretty cool.

Got my mini and had issues with the Dpad double triggering when pressed. Took the controller apart and found the screw loose on the Dpad tighten that up if your having issues.

If I'm not mistaken, these were produced directly by SEGA, not a 3rd party like ours will be. I'm sure you'll see most of them up on ebay for stupid mark ups, as usual.
@@billy-waynejeffcoat4828 Retro-bit is releasing officially licensed 6-button genesis controllers. They partnered with sega to develop them. They're virtually identical to the originals and made specifically for the mini. I have the 8 button usb one they made just a little bit ago and they're really fantastic, those are also compatible with the mini. The build quality is great and it plays and feels just like I remember the originals. I know I'll be picking up the more faithful 6-button one too as soon as they're available. They're like $20 which I think is a pretty good deal as far as the quality of the controller you get. So yeah there will be an option to buy an original 6 button controller for this when it comes out.
the regional games are all there except it only comes with the titles that were predetermined for each regional release of the system. so the jp will have the jp list but all regions of the games on the jp list. the usa will have all regions of the usa list of games. etc etc etc

The library is so good that it feels as if I made it myself. This is so official that Sega even made an original soundtrack for it, and hired the legendary Yuzo Koshiro to do it. I really can't wait, I'm very excited to finally own an official Genesis release. It will be my first Genesis console in general. I'm excited even for the 3-button controllers, I always wanted to have those because those are the originals. I have never owned even a fake Genesis. I just had the multiple collections released on PlayStation. I am glad that they chose to release the three button controllers. We have so many usb 6 buttons variants , but now we can finally play games on this mini console and on our computers with the nostalgic original three-button. I feel like I am the only person who thinks this...

Hey SpawnWave, thought you might be interested in this: I took a bit of research on that UniIC chip right beside the Z7213, and it's apparently not 512 MB, but *_2 GB_* of RAM. On UniIC's actual product listing, they have two 512MB chips, both have model numbers of SCB15H512xxxxx. But the chip on the Genesis Mini actually says SCB15H2G160AF (the "AF" portion is continued on the next line of text). That indicates that this console actually has more RAM than we all initially thought, which is a pleasant surprise.

Just so you are aware, you aren't supposed to add new games to it, that wasn't Sega and M2's intent for the system. However, since the system hooks into the power adapter with a USB, this means that it will be easy to hook up to a PC and hack. I wouldn't be surprised if the Hakchi devs add Genesis mini support shortly after this releases or something.
@@KoolRanch Its not hackable. SEGA will be launching a new Cloud Storage and SD Storage service for it that will let you use Sega Forever and play new current gen titles.
Well from looking at it so far you can get it into flash mode by holding down reset when you power it up like the snes mini and you can talk to it in FEL mode. Looks like it is a A33 chip acroding to sunxi-fel

Spawn covered this over a month ago and I wish they would just think ahead. Make the cartridge slot for the 32x have a USB port, same with the CD attachment slot. And those attachments were flash drives that added games from their respective libraries. They could get extra sales/revenues and really bring the nostalgia

Hey Spawn Wave, if you play the games when using a different language you also get that version of the game too (US, Japan, Europe), which is really cool. There are some stark differences between versions.
I had a Genesis as a teen, and so did many friends. I never saw the 6 button controller. I bought it a year into it's release. When did the 6 button come out, and was it ever packaged with the system? Also I've been trying to remember the name of a Ninja game for Genesis. Idk if it was Shinobi, Ninja Gaiden, or neither of those 2 IPs. -In a later level(possibly the last or next to last level) you are scaling a partially built sky scraper/high rise building. I remember it had steel beams, and I think some of the building might of been completed on the exterior. At ground level it looked like a construction zone. Like it was gated off, had tarps covering some of the materials laying in piles on the ground. It was a numbered Iteration of the franchise 2, 3, or 4; I can't remember. If you know can you please tell me the name of the franchise, and the #? Please, and thank you!

Practicing with the 8 button genesis controller on hollow knight in preparation for when this thing comes out. I cant wait to play it since it was the one console I never played as a kid.. and I regret it because I love the controller!
How long is the cord for the controller? In my opinion, that could be a deal-breaker if it's too short, because I really don't want to sit on the floor or prop a chair like too close to the TV. Ideally, I would love to just be able to sit on my couch and play, but that wasn't possible with the NES mini or the SNES Mini
I saw on one youtube channel that they compared the games sound to an original and people say there is quite abit of sound lag on this system and a few have even cancelled their pre order. one controller also wasn't working when taken out of the box,I hope they have time to fix issues

Awesome Preview video Jon(SW). The Sega Mega Drive Genesis Mini is looking fantastic and Sega fans are gonna love it, I will definitely try and get one I am on the Mini Consoles bandwagon lol cuz they so cool and nostalgic :-).
I am looking forward to picking up my preorder for the Official Sega Genesis Mini as growing up I was and still too this day a huge Sega fan but to be fair the 2018 version of the ATGames Sega Genesis Flashback HD was actually pretty decent, much improved over the 2017 version you have the box hanging on your wall and is shown at the beginning of the video.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but did the 2018 model have an SD card slot and an firmware update to add Games like Sega CD? I'm so confused by all the models, but I want one that I can add Sega CD games too, however I cannot find one to purchase here in Canada ;(
@@janX9 Yes the 2018 model has a SD card slot on the side and you can add games. Other difference is the 2018 model looks alot more like a model 1 genesis, it has a mock volume slider where the 2017 model didn't.
On all the emulators for PC, you can turn off authentic emulation and it won't slow down. The slowdown is coming from the emulator scene, where the enthusiasts are trying to reproduce an authentic experience of how the old hardware performed with games. Like on TMNT games when a bunch of sprites are on screen at once everything starts slowing down and flickering, that was how the hardware performed at the time.
Make sure you go out and BUY IT people, i want my dreamcast mini out of them at some point.

they should have put it with a 6 buttons instead. My SNES consoles and games got stolen. I saved enough money and got a Genesis. Afterward, I got SF2 Champion Edition only to realize that the 3 buttons controller sucks. Then they have 6 buttons. Ever since then, I just hook up the 6 buttons and play it from there. I don't know why they didn't included the 6 buttons instead of the 3 buttons. This is one negative of this Genesis classic min.
Definitely going to need that 8bitdo 6 button controller that Sega licensed not too long ago.
I'm hoping the Magic-NS Mayflash adapter is made compatible with the Genesis mini. That way I can use other alternative controllers that have more buttons. Heck, I can piss off everyone from the 90's by connecting a Wii remote with a SNES Classic controller and play Genesis games.

developers had to jump through hoops in order to use both ram chips (a portion of one was reserved for the OS of course) which lead to issues with textures in some engines.
also the weird RAM setup was also the reason the PS3 never got system wide party chat.
I really hope SEGA made a good amount of these cause I really want one, but I won't be able to get it at launch.

My older brother and I started off as Sega kids with the Genesis and despite the Mini not having Rocket Knight Adventures, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, or some of the more obscure licensed games we loved, it has Castle of Illusion, Streets of Rage 2, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Contra: Hard Corps, and Mega Man. So, I'm already planning to surprise my family with this console when it arrives from UPS in Sept.

Wish had the Batman Returns, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Hard Drivin, Terminator 1- 2, and T2 Arcade game, Robocop vs Terminator, TMNT Hyperstone Heist, TMNT Tournament Fighters, VR Troopers, MMPR, MMPR the movie, Ms Pac Man, NBA Jam, Terrican, Universal Soldier, Two Crude Dudes. To name few of my other favorite genesis games. Hoping it can be expanded or hacked easily eventually!

I actually think Sega has been making a comeback for a while. Of course in terms of new consoles they haven't but if you think about the Sega classic games being available on other platforms like PS4 and Nintendo Switch. They are still very much in the picture and now they get another life with their new retro console. Sega is back !

I haven't figured out how to run master system games on the Mini yet, but it really *should* be possible and easy, considering that the Genesis itself is really just a souped-up version of the master system and it uses all the same basic hardware (unlike the Saturn & Dreamcast which are truly new systems). That's why the Power Base Converter was able to run master system games on the genesis without any kind of alteration other than just a simple cartridge converter.

Not happening. Dreamcast is comparable to ps2 and ps2 isn't easy to emulate on cheap hardware, and nobody would buy a console emulator for 200-300 dollars

@@MacMan2152 Saturn emulation is difficult for the same reasons that it was difficult to program for in the first place: the chip layout was more complex on the Saturn than the PlayStation, and thus trying to emulate what they were doing is more complex. I don't believe that any emulators for it have reached the level of refinement that has been attained for the NES, SNES, MD/Genesis, and PlayStation, but it certainly should be doable though.
@@ostiariusalpha i have a saturn emulator on my pc and it runs games such as radiant silvergun and panzer dragoon perfectly. This is unofficial stuff, I'm pretty sure people who've made the saturn would be able to do this even better.
@@MacMan2152 The people that built the Saturn are long since retired, and none of them were experts on emulation programming. Being "official" confers literally zero expertise; as shown by Sony's release of the PlayStation Classic. Nintendo, Sega, and Konami have all turned to outside contractors for emulation on their mini consoles. Whichever emulator you happen to use will play some Saturn games nearly perfect, but will have issues on others. This is a problem that both amateur and professional emulators have not yet overcome.
The menu selection sound was done by Yu Suzuki. In the Japanese show that revealed the last 12 games (they had announcements before that for 30 games prior), Yu Suzuki was one of the featured guests. He explained that he couldn't fit all the music he wanted into the game selection screen due to memory constraints so he added 16 bit sound effects into the menu. The "bong" sound which bothers you has the Yu Suzuki touch! :-)

It should be noted that not only do you get the different box art with each language selection, the games are also from that region. So with Japanese selected, you get games like the Japanese version of Contra Hard Corps. Pretty cool.
I wish they made it so you could plug in your old original cartridge games into it to play, that way I could play Sonic 3.

Got my mini and had issues with the Dpad double triggering when pressed. Took the controller apart and found the screw loose on the Dpad tighten that up if your having issues.

If I'm not mistaken, these were produced directly by SEGA, not a 3rd party like ours will be. I'm sure you'll see most of them up on ebay for stupid mark ups, as usual.

They're virtually identical to the originals and made specifically for the mini. I have the 8 button usb one they made just a little bit ago and they're really fantastic, those are also compatible with the mini. The build quality is great and it plays and feels just like I remember the originals. I know I'll be picking up the more faithful 6-button one too as soon as they're available. They're like $20 which I think is a pretty good deal as far as the quality of the controller you get. So yeah there will be an option to buy an original 6 button controller for this when it comes out.

I took a bit of research on that UniIC chip right beside the Z7213, and it's apparently not 512 MB, but *_2 GB_* of RAM. On UniIC's actual product listing, they have two 512MB chips, both have model numbers of SCB15H512xxxxx. But the chip on the Genesis Mini actually says SCB15H2G160AF (the "AF" portion is continued on the next line of text). That indicates that this console actually has more RAM than we all initially thought, which is a pleasant surprise.

My heart stopped when you said the cartridge slot is not functional. Is there a way to load roms onto it?
Just so you are aware, you aren't supposed to add new games to it, that wasn't Sega and M2's intent for the system. However, since the system hooks into the power adapter with a USB, this means that it will be easy to hook up to a PC and hack. I wouldn't be surprised if the Hakchi devs add Genesis mini support shortly after this releases or something.
@@KoolRanch Its not hackable. SEGA will be launching a new Cloud Storage and SD Storage service for it that will let you use Sega Forever and play new current gen titles.

I want to import the peripherals for this piece of awesomeness. They're purely cosmetic, but look awesome. There's a 32X and a Sega CD add on
Spawn covered this over a month ago and I wish they would just think ahead. Make the cartridge slot for the 32x have a USB port, same with the CD attachment slot. And those attachments were flash drives that added games from their respective libraries. They could get extra sales/revenues and really bring the nostalgia

I had a Genesis as a teen, and so did many friends. I never saw the 6 button controller. I bought it a year into it's release. When did the 6 button come out, and was it ever packaged with the system?
Also I've been trying to remember the name of a Ninja game for Genesis. Idk if it was Shinobi, Ninja Gaiden, or neither of those 2 IPs.
-In a later level(possibly the last or next to last level) you are scaling a partially built sky scraper/high rise building. I remember it had steel beams, and I think some of the building might of been completed on the exterior. At ground level it looked like a construction zone. Like it was gated off, had tarps covering some of the materials laying in piles on the ground.
It was a numbered Iteration of the franchise 2, 3, or 4; I can't remember.
If you know can you please tell me the name of the franchise, and the #? Please, and thank you!

Practicing with the 8 button genesis controller on hollow knight in preparation for when this thing comes out. I cant wait to play it since it was the one console I never played as a kid.. and I regret it because I love the controller!
How long is the cord for the controller? In my opinion, that could be a deal-breaker if it's too short, because I really don't want to sit on the floor or prop a chair like too close to the TV. Ideally, I would love to just be able to sit on my couch and play, but that wasn't possible with the NES mini or the SNES Mini
I saw on one youtube channel that they compared the games sound to an original and people say there is quite abit of sound lag on this system and a few have even cancelled their pre order. one controller also wasn't working when taken out of the box,I hope they have time to fix issues

I am looking forward to picking up my preorder for the Official Sega Genesis Mini as growing up I was and still too this day a huge Sega fan but to be fair the 2018 version of the ATGames Sega Genesis Flashback HD was actually pretty decent, much improved over the 2017 version you have the box hanging on your wall and is shown at the beginning of the video.

I'm so confused by all the models, but I want one that I can add Sega CD games too, however I cannot find one to purchase here in Canada ;(
@@janX9 Yes the 2018 model has a SD card slot on the side and you can add games. Other difference is the 2018 model looks alot more like a model 1 genesis, it has a mock volume slider where the 2017 model didn't.

On all the emulators for PC, you can turn off authentic emulation and it won't slow down. The slowdown is coming from the emulator scene, where the enthusiasts are trying to reproduce an authentic experience of how the old hardware performed with games. Like on TMNT games when a bunch of sprites are on screen at once everything starts slowing down and flickering, that was how the hardware performed at the time.
