Joe, I’ve watched all your videos before finally getting to this one and learning about Armourgeddon and how you got your start in this. You should make a playlist called “Why We Do This” (or whatever) and include this video, and even though WhistlinDiesel has a very different style to you, he has a great video where you are just casually leaning on your forktruck and basically explaining the history of British Armoured vehicles to him- that segment is pure gold and should not be missed by any of your followers. Cheers.
Lovely to hear how you became interested in tanks. I’ve binge watched all your vids and love the banter with your buddies. You are the Laurel and Hardy of the tank world and remind me of my good friend who was obsessed with Jaguar cars and became a most admired restorer. Cheers.
As a Chieftain crewman veteran (1RTR) I love your content and it really brings back the memories but I have to admit Ted is always the highlight of your videos for me.
Great to hear a little of what drives that passion you have. Also if you love doing your job, then it's never really a "job" either & that's something I think many of us might be envious of. Fair play to you. Good old Ted though... He rocks 😻
You are lucky you have 50 years to get your projects finished (with luck). I had great plans until I had an accident in my mid 30s that stopped me in my tracks. Enjoy every day while you can. Mind you, yesterday I stripped a 1929 A model ford for some repairs. Clean fuel tank, radiator etc. Someone restored it cosmetically, real nice looking but the insides of the mechanicals were original. 1/2 inch of sludge in the sump..bearings OK but worn rings. Anyway Mr Hughes keep up the most excellent work, Happy Easter and G'day from Tasmania
HMS Intrepid had a BARV - I remember being amazed by it sitting down on the vehicle deck. That big bumper is intended for pushing landing craft back off the beach. I guess Fearless had one too. ATTURM at Instow had one for the same purpose.
You done a beautiful thing in getting the tank running to allow the previous owner the chance to fulfill his dream of driving it before his passing ❤❤❤
I drove what i believe was a chieftain on a tank driving experience, surprisingly easy to drive with gears like a motorbike on your foot. Love the fleet and looking forward to seeing some work done on them.
It always amazed me when those BARV’s came into the workshop - complete with diving suits. Seemed so weird at the time. As for those starters, yeah, really not the best things in the world 😉
It was fascinating to hear how you got into that business, do any of your tanks have their gun stabiliser working? That is what makes modern tanks look so badass, my uncle was in the REME working on the project and said that the breach block thrashes about in the turret when you have it turned on but you you could boil a kettle on it at 30 mph across country.
Brilliant, thanks for taking the trouble. Because of the various locations growing up, there was often a (Scammell) or chieftain round the corner & of course could hear the sound miles off. Later when we moved to 'France' Dorset, we would come across them at the firing ranges at Lulworth & used to sound record them at Bovington. The odd Centurion would often make a appearance as auxiliary tank. At Lulworth there were over hundred parked in a field for decommissioning in early 1990s. Later at Borden (REME) I got to sit in the Chieftains. It's like something that was just contemporary to growing up & felt strange post cold war era to see them abandoned & derelict. All of a sudden, as if over night, they were rare beasts. I like the low profile of the chieftain & screaming engine still strangely nostalgic about. I remember the build quality on gun laying switches & still have a commanders sight. Chieftain my personal favourite but would settle for a Scammell recovery. Enjoy your approach & social conversationalists comradery. Haha. There, the secret is in the wording.
Hey fella Loved the story of how you got started in this crazy hobby of yours Oh what it must be like to work at your dream job on your own doorstep with a crazy bunch of friends !! REALLY jealous if I lived closer I would be BEGGING for a job !! Hope to catch up with you guys at the shows this year RESPECT !!
Thanks for the back story Joe, I did ask a few videos back if you had been in the Army and you laughed and said you were a farmers son which I did get but what I didn't was that farmers are not really known for fixing MBT's they are more known for fixing combine harvesters with bailing twine and putting limbs in moving machinery etc 🤣 great videos thanks for sharing and please keep em coming.
Thank you for explaining how your journey started. I've watch a few of your resent vids. They are so interesting to watch that I have started at the beginning and watching the through lol
I have loved everything tank all of my life! I have read hundreds of books, built hundreds of models, been to all the museums in the US. I was stationed at Fort Knox in the late 70's and saw the M1 when it was on trials. I own 6 Henglong RC tanks, and one day had hoped to get to ride in a tank before I leave this mortal coil. I am now 60 and am disabled by diabetes, and can no longer work. I do have my fingers crossed though, LOL!
Thanks for doing this video. You have answered all the questions I had about how you got involved with these tanks and know the stuff you do. Brilliant.👍Great channel, my favourite on RUclips TBH
Thank you for this wonderful little insight into your career and experience. I'd guessed that some of the other were ex army just by the way they act and speak, but wasnt sure about you. Had marked you down as possibly being an ex junior army officer; just by something in your nature.
Not a tank but im restoring an old 1972 allen grove crane.bit off more than can chew.engines, pumps, cabs etc but not giving up yet.love your vids.keep up the good work.always wanted to have a go at a chieftain or a chally.😂
Love the BARV and the Chieftain (much too good to sell to America! ). A BARV can be seen in Falklands documentary footage of the Bluff Cove disaster! It was ferrying injured Welsh guardsmen ashore from filled to swamping lifeboats etc!
It's like going back 50 years to Slab Common in Bordon where you could see this hardware - and get to play tankers - except most of the gauges and anything interesting had been removed!
Really interesting to hear the back story, how you ended up doing what you do. WD brought me here a few weeks ago (I’m sure I’m one of many). Since then I think I’ve watched all your videos, interesting stuff, thanks 👍
That chieftain is in better nick than the ones I was crewing at CATC BG in the mid 90’s..... eventually they gave us some tired old CR1’s which were a welcome upgrade
I want a Ted T-shirt. I love the way everyone is happy and funny but knows their stuff on your farm just makes Bruce Crompton look even more like a Del Boy arms dealer.
Thank you for the explanation about your background in this work. You must have learned a lot that way. The Chieftain must be a popular tank, you have had quite a few recently and is that 2 being exported to USA? Great and simple video, thank you!!
The best dog shampoo is baby shampoo. And the purest baby shampoo you can get with no scents at all. Doesn’t make them itch and kind to their skin and eyes
I and my wife rode a new harley into a yellow Volvo car that did a right turn in front of us, much pain all around i got insurance coin and been building ferret and studebaker ever since 😅
Mr Hewes. I think there is a BARV on display at the REME Museum at MoD Lyneham. Probably not a runner but i'm sure it was on display there when last i went there.
You have a second Cody-Chieftain! Is there anything you can substitute for the starter motor? Or put a modern electric motor in the old casing? So you've got around the Centurion gun tank, Centurion AVRE x 2, Centurion ARV x 2, Chieftain x 4, German half-track, 6x6 tractors x 2, T-34, Abbot, plus two aircraft and a load of CVRTs. Has the AMX gone? Why does Centurion AVRE No.2 have 105 rather than the demo mortar? Sort out your projects list, get 1 or 2 in the shed on priority and absolutely charge ahead at them! Do you have a schedule/timescale for projects?
Any military vehicle? I'll stick to ground vehicles so we don't get too crazy and I'll choose a brand new Challenger 3, thank you. And for some reason it's not deactivated. And it comes with some "left over" ammo. For the smoothbore. Ok? Ok. PS Possibly the best video you have released yet Joe, thanks to bath time with Ted of course.
Does anyone do a compressed air starter for the Meteor? You do need a big air tank, but in vehicles where the original electric starters were not really up to the job the air starters can work well. Simple to use and easy to repair, and if sized right for the engine concerned, will be very reliable. The other nice thing about them is that you scare the bejeezus out of anyone within 50 feet with the noise and gush of exhaust air. What's not to like? They work just like an air impact gun's motor- but MUCH bigger! Just a thought - enjoy!
If you could have any military vehicle what would you choose?
i wanna get my self a little cvrt scorpion
I would get a Leopard 1A5, fast and updated with technology but still has those early cold war era looks.
BMP 1
Chally 2, Warrior or an S-tank
bob semple definitely things can survive a nuke (if you dont know it google it)
The "live laugh love" door mat really finishes the interior of the BARV. Ted is still the best.
Glad Steve got to drive his tank, that was a really kind gesture. Good luck to you and all the lads n lasses
Great back story Mr Hewes, nice to know a bit more. Great thing you did for that old boy, you are a true gentleman!
Great video. Great to learn about the tanks and the stories of the people behind them.
Glad the fella with cancer got to tear it up in the Chieftain.
An interesting video, a welcome review of your fleet and a little bit of backstory to your involvement in military vehicles. Thanks for sharing
Ted getting a bath at the end made my day. It looks like he knows why he's getting scrubbed and knows he's gonna get dirty again haha
Teds look you don't love me any more when you water in his eyes
Love that when it comes to tank engines, tracks, gearboxes he is in there with bare hands covered in oil, but for bathing Ted the marigolds come out 😁
Joe, I’ve watched all your videos before finally getting to this one and learning about Armourgeddon and how you got your start in this. Ted is so patient and sweet.....it must be nice to have such a tolerant shop super.
Nice to know how you got started mate , Keep up the good work .
As a Chieftain crewman veteran (1RTR) I love your content and it really brings back the memories but I have to admit Ted is always the highlight of your videos for me.
lol I was 3 RTR and know exactly what you mean!! memories!!
2RTR...just need a 4 and we've got the pack... 😂
Great to hear a little of what drives that passion you have. Also if you love doing your job, then it's never really a "job" either & that's something I think many of us might be envious of. Fair play to you.
Good old Ted though... He rocks 😻
I'm impressed matey . Taking on a centurion engine change with no knowledge is awsome . Well done

Thanks for the backstory, makes everything more interesting - I’d have to have one of those Fodens 😍
Thanks for your time and consideration very informative be safe out there 😊🇬🇧🇺🇲👍
You done a beautiful thing in getting the tank running to allow the previous owner the chance to fulfill his dream of driving it before his passing ❤❤❤
That story about Steve's tank was a real great bit of community positivity. Class act gents.
Your lovely bath tank and ted getting a bath .brilliant video thankyou. 🐕

There has gotta be a person somewhere who drove that vehicle. Is this the one we see in the Falklands Conflict?
Great to have your background and how you learnt about tanks.
Blimey that doormat is well used, as the show you went to last year was brand new! Also thrown into the deep end for fixing tanks :O
Yes and I will do a video soon of the gun stabilisation system
Nice to hear your histroy and how you started doing what you do. 👍👍
Summat different, but great! Loved hearing your back story.
Ive always wanted a scammell explorer from seeing 1 as a kid ( about 45 years ago ) 😊😊
Brilliant, thanks for taking the trouble.

Haha.
There, the secret is in the wording.
Your commentary here is just brilliant. Thank you
Love the background story and sentiment behind what you do.
Hey fella
Loved the story of how you got started in this crazy hobby of yours

Great info, thanks for bringing us up to speed.
The real Joe , Nice talk mate I enjoyed your tour Thank you 🤟❤🦘 slowly working my way through your videos ,most enjoyable 👍 stay safe
I would have to have either a fully restored Mk 11 Centurion or a RL Bedforc or both, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia 👍👍👍
I think Ted shares your same passion for tanks too!! 🤣 🐶 I’m not so sure he likes the bath though 😜🛁
Great video. An finely got some back story realy cool British cowboy
Thank you, for a bit about your back storey and the storey's behind some of the vehicles :)
Yes I know that feeling too many projects. Enjoy your project Michael
Thanks for the run down of your background, I often wondered if you were ex Army or not. This has become one of my favourite RUclips channels.
Thanks for the background story 👍👍
Great to see your enthusiasm 😉
We had a BARV aboard HMS Intrepid in the far East during the early 70s. Amazing vehicle.
Great collection mate. Think I would go for the Good ole Duck, very handy for a lot of things.
Thank you for explaining how your journey started. I've watch a few of your resent vids. They are so interesting to watch that I have started at the beginning and watching the through lol

Thanks for doing this video. You have answered all the questions I had about how you got involved with these tanks and know the stuff you do. Brilliant.👍Great channel, my favourite on RUclips TBH
Quality viewing...loving the life history insight, it would be good to hear more on this subject.
Schwimmwagon for sure. Thanks for this, I like your quiet videos.
It was good to hear your story, very impressive.

Thank you for this wonderful little insight into your career and experience. I'd guessed that some of the other were ex army just by the way they act and speak, but wasnt sure about you. Had marked you down as possibly being an ex junior army officer; just by something in your nature.
Thank you nope just a simple country boy
Thanks for the background on your story. Was wondering about it.
Not a tank but im restoring an old 1972 allen grove crane.bit off more than can chew.engines, pumps, cabs etc but not giving up yet.love your vids.keep up the good work.always wanted to have a go at a chieftain or a chally.😂
It’s amazing what things you find baling 🤣. As bad as me😁👍. Great little walk round, I’m slowly learning about these mammoths
MY GOD!! TANK HEAVEN!!!! OH THE JOY OF MECHANICS!!!!!! AT WHAT POINT DO I GET MY HANDS DIRTY?!?!?!!
Looking forward to seeing that mk.13 brought back to life. Top vid as per 👍🏻
Chieftain for me, the growl it gives off is incredible, imagine being in the dark with these beasts creeping about
Love the BARV and the Chieftain (much too good to sell to America! ). A BARV can be seen in Falklands documentary footage of the Bluff Cove disaster! It was ferrying injured Welsh guardsmen ashore from filled to swamping lifeboats etc!

A banana facial! 😮 Ted is spoled!
That's awesome thanks for the insight....now seb and that shed 🤔
The mat in the BARV :) :)
Great episode. Nice to hear a bit about how it all started, I got to say the BARV is a great vehicle.
Nice collection
Interesting video👍🏼
Austin champ 🏴☠️✌🏼
That chieftain is in better nick than the ones I was crewing at CATC BG in the mid 90’s..... eventually they gave us some tired old CR1’s which were a welcome upgrade
As a very young Army cadet in the early 70’s I had the chance to travel in one of these in the sea.
Keep up the good work you and gang and i'd would of bet you had been in the R.E.M.E. or Tank Crewman
I want a Ted T-shirt. I love the way everyone is happy and funny but knows their stuff on your farm just makes Bruce Crompton look even more like a Del Boy arms dealer.
Ted the Tank Dog T-Shirts!
@@MrHewes "This tank has officially been sniffed."
Image looking down the bow plate of the tank at the doggo.
I love a good chieftain!
A 'Banana Facial'! Ooh, Matron!😊
Great video, really enjoy seeing your projects coming back to life 👍
Interesting to hear how you got into that line of business 😀
Been on this channel a few weeks now and I've learnt a shit load about tanks! Petrol and diesel 😜
splendid chap
Thank you for the explanation about your background in this work. You must have learned a lot that way. The Chieftain must be a popular tank, you have had quite a few recently and is that 2 being exported to USA? Great and simple video, thank you!!
"not really into killing and all that nonsense" - Love it
The best dog shampoo is baby shampoo. And the purest baby shampoo you can get with no scents at all. Doesn’t make them itch and kind to their skin and eyes
Ted living his best life :)
Chieftain’s not just a nice bit of kit, she’s beautiful
❤ where is the boss ? Ted ❤❤❤
I'd love a Chieftain Mk11! Would be awesome to get the TOGS working but I bet TISH's are a bit rare lol.
I and my wife rode a new harley into a yellow Volvo car that did a right turn in front of us, much pain all around i got insurance coin and been building ferret and studebaker ever since 😅
I like this video. It gives his history (which I was wondering about)
Nice one!. Nuff said! 🙂
Mr Hewes. I think there is a BARV on display at the REME Museum at MoD Lyneham. Probably not a runner but i'm sure it was on display there when last i went there.
There sure is and I don’t believe it runs
Cool to find out about the Barv’s never heard of them and wondering what is the dates on the barv
