- Welcome, everyone! Today, I'm showing how to replace the rear CV shafts on your Polaris Sportsman. This specific one is a 2004 Sportsman 400. It will be the exact same steps, or very similar steps for most other years of sportsman, with maybe some slightly different fastener sizes, but mostly the same. Enjoy!

Thank you. Your video is the most detailed I have seen. Everything was perfectly clear. Super video!!
I appreciate the positive feedback!
I agree! Well done sir!
There's a line somewhere in those hub b earrings where the grease enters. You definitely want to pack that with grease otherwise you're going to have failure
Great video. Very informative. Your info will certainly help a bunch in a few days when I begin my project of replacing all bushings and rear axles. Thanks again for sharing your time and experience. Have a blessed day !!
@@weldonlangley245 Thanks! Glad I could help. Good luck!
That video was great! One of the best I ever saw! Thank you.
@@andrewkoszuth4302 Appreciate the positive feedback, thanks!
Very good video. Explained every thing 100 Percent. Great job
Just to help out here……
1. The first step he took taking apart the sway bar …… you only need to undo the single bolt holding the bracket to the sway bar. Don’t take the one with the rubber grommets…. Not necessary.
2. When you take the two bolts out on the bottom of the bearing carrier (hub) you don’t need to pry out the plastic bushings. You are most likely to damage them. You just need to wiggle the metal spacers out less than a 1/4” to release the carrier. If you stick a flat head screw driver into them you can get them to move enough to release the carrier.
3. If you are removing the CV axle …… strongly recommend replacing the plastic bushings on the upper A arm. You need to remove the CV axle to be able to replace these bushings so it’s a good idea to do it now when you have the axle out. If you discover these bushings are bad later you will be pissed when you realize you can’t get the bolt out without removing the CV axle.
Absolutely perfect video thank you! I was wondering how to get get the complete axle out I've already changed the boot but I need a new axle this second time around I wasn't quite sure how to change the whole thing but this video is fantastic
how did you change a cv boot without removing the axel?
He may have use the split boot and a clamp set to repair. It is harder to do it on the vehicle, but I may have to resort the same way if mine doesn't come out.
Thanks ! I had a feeling those pins on lower had to come out.
This was a great help! Although my axel came apart and had to use the muffler clamp and chain to get ahold on it. Then I also used the pry bar and it came out, Thanks!!!!
Hey Daniel, did you take any photos that you can share on your outcome on your base axle removal. Mine is still stuck pretty good. Thought purchasing a long chisel to see if it will let me inside that small portion.
Temgo la misna 4 ruedas es un lio ayar videos en México ya que soy aqui no necesite traducir lo que ablabas con tan solo ver lo entendí todo perfectamente tu video saludos de irapuato guanajuato México 🤝
Perfecto. ¡Me alegro de poder ayudar! ¡Gracias por ver!
You explained it perfectly.
How much would you charge for this ? I have two bad ones on my 2005 Polaris 600 I just picked up and wondering if I should just do them all or take them to shop ?
I believe the 2005 is a different chassis or at least body style, so I'm not sure if it's the exact procedure or not. I know they changed the axle setup around that time. I would research and see if you can find a video for an '05. If it's the same as this, I'd save your money and do it yourself. It's not bad.
Thanks!! Huge help. I think I'm gonna try to do the fix myself.
Thanks Tony. Been struggling with getting mine out on a 500HO, going to give this a shot.
Yeah them C clips can be a bit of a fight
@@TonyTheTruckGuy After 5 days, I got those f'ers out!!! Could have been the can of PB blaster, but it worked!
@@mccass13 😂😂 That PB is pretty good stuff, probably broke up some rust on the c-clips that were holding you up
excellent video. thank you.
A wood block between the case and the pry bar my friend. 👍
Sadly, I didn't have one lol
@@TonyTheTruckGuy ah shit! Its a trick i found useful for adding leverage in a tight spot and protecting soft alum surfaces as well. Cheers man! 🍻
Nice video Tony, This will be my first Polaris to swap the rear axle. This ATV belonged to a neighbors dad and he kept it in great condition. I'm here in the south, so thank goodness it doesn't snow. Do you have any other videos? I'm used to Hondas and Yamaha ATV's...thanks
I think my only other current videos on this machine are the drive belt replacement video, and plow installation video. I will have more coming over the next few months though because I have lots of maintenance to do on this one.
@@TonyTheTruckGuy Well I got as far as getting ready to pull the original out and the bearings ball bearings came out and now the base of it is still stuck in the rear differential.
@@Smalltechguy So it’s just a shaft basically with nothing to pry on now?
@@TonyTheTruckGuy yeah, the base of it is stuck in the differential. I wish I could weld to the hub and attach two lock pliers to it and try to yank them off that way
@@Smalltechguy I’d say a vice grip with slide hammer is probably best bet but idk if you’ve got one. Is the fatter part of the shaft still there to slip a pry bar between the fatter part and the gear case like I did?
Super helpful. Thank you for all the great detail
first stop is the car wash or at least a garden hose.
Not in January in Minnesota 😂
I got the same kind you want to pack that would Grease. It got a part that they sell you put it right on over the spline in the hub and hook your grease gun up to it
Thanks for the video! Do you remember how long it took you to complete?
No I don’t. It’s hard to say even if I did because recording always adds a decent amount of time. Couple hours I’d say depending how much wrenching experience you have and how many beers you drink while doing it lol
Don't add washers it breaks it
For the CV? That’s how they were when I took them apart lol
Nice thank you
