    found this on the wiki:
    In 2018, Spielberg told Empire Magazine, "I felt like a fish out of water making Hook ... I didn’t have confidence in the script. I had confidence in the first act and I had confidence in the epilogue. I didn’t have confidence in the body of it." He added "I didn’t quite know what I was doing and I tried to paint over my insecurity with production value," admitting “the more insecure I felt about it, the bigger and more colorful the sets became."

    This is one of the movies I saw early in my childhood that taught me how to Feel. For everyone. I actually could understand the grown-ups even with my 5 yrs old brain, and showed me that growing up is okay because your inner child still stay apart of you.

    • @cjwrench07

      JamCal-X That’s the point they are making. As children this movie seemed damn near perfect, and taught simple, but valuable, lessons.
      It’s not until watching it as an adult, do you see the weirdness, and the layers of what the scenes are implying.
      I still love the movie, and it gave me good memories as a kid. It’s just now, and I can see those flaws, but still appreciate how good it was overall.

    I 100% refute the notion that this is a “bad” movie. First off, I’ll take Spielberg’s “worst” over most directors’ best any day. Second, though it is a flawed film, it’s still easily one of the best kids movies ever made. It’s so full of magic and excitement, the spectacle of it all is so unforgettable. And I love that Spielberg wasn’t afraid to make it as sad, scary, or unsettling as it needed to be at moments. Movies that put you through multiple emotions are the ones you remember and make for a life changing cinematic experience, especially to child. Even if this movie isn’t as effective with adults (though I believe it is) it’s still more magical and memorable than most kids movies that have been made since and it’ll always hold a special place in my heart, thank you Steven!!

    Couple points... Kevin Kline was originally cast as Peter in this film but had to drop out so Robin replaced him. And Wendy never adopted Peter as her grandson, he says in the film she arranged for the adoption of him by his American parents. He then married her granddaughter later.

      I wouldn't say that it's a bad movie, it's a movie where individual pieces are better than the larger whole. The scene where he's yelling at his kids, the abduction scene, pirate town, his first encounter with the Lost Boys, the food fight, when he remembers who he is and flies and the war and final duel are all great, but the larger whole of the movie isn't good.

      The movie has its issues, but I have kids, and watching it with them helps me forget its weaknesses and I resonate with scenes I didn’t before I was a father. Like the mother reuniting scene at the end. Or Peter throwing his hat and pirate costume on the ground: I used to resonate with Thudd being disappointed in Peter, today I resonate with Peter struggling with his realizing how absentee dad he’s been.

    Oh and Hoffman does the voice of the pilot as its a long standing tradition in Peter pan productions that the actor playing Hook also plays Wendy's father... as Isaac's does in the 2003 version. But since that role is not in this film he was given the pilot role as a nod to Hook actor playing a second role.

    I was born the year Hook came out. I have always been a little embarrassed that it has remained one of my favorite films of all time until I saw this! You guys hit the nail on the head with this one! The dark and twisted plot in addition to the Dustin Hoffman performance and the stunning production design have made this such a weird mess of craziness that I still love and my kids love too! I totally agree that I have no idea how I had that much patience, but they have watched it twice this weekend alone! There is something special about this movie that goes beyond the sum of it's bizzare moving parts!! In my opinion this is ya'lls best honest trailer to date and that comes from a die hard fan of this film, Kuddos!!!

    Robin Williams isn’t a cartoon character. I mean, he is literally Genie. But disregarding that, he’s a Julliard trained actor. He didn’t fit in a box. He could do drama, comedy, thriller, etc. He could do that all and bring authenticity to whatever role he was playing. No one else could have played Peter in Hook. It wouldn’t have worked and we wouldn’t still be talking about it if Robin wasn’t Peter.
    Also, Robin Williams would bike like an insane amount of miles when he lived in San Francisco so that could explain the ab

    • @cjwrench07
      @cjwrench07 6 лет назад

      Mary Zimmermann Scrooged-era Bill Murray could have pulled it off, and pulled off a masterful performance.
      While Williams had tremendous range as an actor. It is indisputable that he was his best in over-the-top / body humour comedies. There is nothing wrong with that. Comedy is an amazing genre, and he used to perfectly to bring joy to millions of people.

    • @quiteecontrary
      @quiteecontrary 6 лет назад +3

      Doctor Cthulhu I don’t think that’s indisputable. Two of my favorite films/performances of his are Dead Poets Society and What Dreams May Come.
      I’m not discounting his comedy. His comedy has made me laugh till I had tears in my eyes. But as an actor he wasn’t just his comedy.
      He was often at his best when he was able to blend comedy and emotion. Which he did better and more authentically than anybody imo. His performances were consistently more vulnerable and accessible than I remember any of the other actors listed ever being.

    • @cjwrench07
      @cjwrench07 6 лет назад

      Mary Zimmermann for sure his comedy had emotion, but the main theme was always the comedy part. His two major ones I think about most Mrs.Doubtfire and Jumanji, both had emotional moments for sure. But it was the comedic performances that made the movies.
      They were also the movies that did near the best at box office. Deadpool Poets and What Dreams are great movies, but they aren’t his iconic roles. I would guess those two aren’t the first ones, or even fourth movie, *most*, people remember about him.
      It was his comedic chops that really put him on the map, and which gave him the star power to do the more dramatic roles later on. Like we get none of Dead poets or What dreams, unless he makes his mark in. Mork&Mindy, Doubtfire, and Jumanji style roles.

    • @stackels97
      @stackels97 5 лет назад

      Doctor Cthulhu ummmmmmm Dead Poets Society is one of Robins most well known roles of all time, as is his role in Good Will Hunting. Neither of which were comedic roles. Sure to the masses who don’t like to think so much, His comedic talent would stand out more, but without his depth, Robins work would never have been been as impactful as it was.
      Personally, other than Mrs. Doubtfire (which was also quite dramatic btw) and Aladdin, it was always Robins deeper roles that stood out.

    I'm usually in agreement, but I fucking love Hook. I'm surprised they take issue with Peter being a dick most of the movie. It's the classic Scrooge scenario! Plus, the John Williams score perfectly compliments the solid-gold heart of the film. So when the orphans are standing up one by one at Wendy's honoring ceremony...Or when Pockets is grabbing at Robin's face and says, "Oh there you are Peter!"...Or when Pan's memories flood back inside the tree and he reflects on his children being born, then finally finds his happy thought...Or when Rufio humbly places the sword at his feet and says, "You are the Pan"...Or when Rufio dies and says he wishes he had a dad like him...None of this phased you jaded bastards??? Fair enough...P.S. I'm obsessed with Honest Trailers. Keep 'em coming.

    it was an option to watch on a flight to the philippines, and as soon as i read the description i was like ‘nope! don’t want peter pan ruined for me thanks’
    i don’t know if that was a good or bad decision (i still haven’t seen Hook)

    I read the book by Barrie years ago. Hook was surprisingly close to the way the book was. Including imagining food and that lost boys often die. It’s a fairly dark book.

      the Boo Box pirate is definitely memorable in this movie. I'm guessing because the screaming really has crying underneath it to make it more intense. Does that seem right, or how else would you describe it?

    I did a quick google search and found out why "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is in Pan.
    I'm hiding the answer below the Read more line for those that don't want the mystery spoiled:
    While doing rehearsals before shooting, the pirate actors were doing a get together thing. There was background musice and when "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came up, they decided to sing along. Hugh Jackman liked that so much he asked the directors and producers to put it in the movie... and they did.

    The one area where Hook improves when viewing as an adult is the relationship of Hook and Smee. As a kid, it's just a boss/devoted lackey relationship, but as an adult, it's very clear Hoffman and Hoskins are playing it as an old gay couple.
    In fact, Hoffman confirms it. From imdb:
    "In an interview with "Playboy" in 2004, Dustin Hoffman (Captain Hook) recalled his 'aha!' moment with 'Bob Hoskins' (Smee) about their characters being gay. They decided to play their characters as "a couple of old queens," because they felt J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan's creator, had created them that way: "Bob and I were rehearsing and suddenly we looked at each other and realized it at the same time. We said, 'These guys are gay....' and it was fun. Suddenly, we rehearsed it that way: 'Get over here, Smee. Give me a foot massage.' We went to Spielberg... and he said, 'This is a kids' movie.' Suddenly, it made all the sense in the world. They were really good friends. They lived on a ship. They were devoted to each other.""

    I also couldn't believe how much patience I had as a kid because I loved this movie! It's definitely the cause of my childhood fear of being stolen from my parents while they were on a date and being locked in a chest with scorpions. Even still, I also think it's the best Peter Pan movie. It's very dark though....very dark. Loved the Avatar reference btw!

    The demo for Hook is way more specific. I was in my 20s when the movie came out and thought it was crap. So, maybe, the line should have been: "If you're in your 30's ..."

    A story in this universe that I have always wanted to see adapted for the screen is the origin story of Captain Hook simply called Capt. Hook. It is a rather dark book, very Tim Burton. It was actually written by J.V.Hart, one of the screenwriters for this movie. Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman are thanked in the endnotes. Highly recommended.

  • @stackels97
    @stackels97 5 лет назад +1

    The fact that Robin clearly made y’all uncomfortable with his performance means he did his job really well.
    Without the seriousness his transformation wouldn’t have had the impact it did.
    Sure the extreme tonal changes were a bit much at times but over all, I felt like the darkness just enhanced the lighter moments.
    I always fast forward certain scenes because they drag a little but overall Hook will always be one of the Great family films of its time.
