    • @Thatguywithlogic
      @Thatguywithlogic Год назад +12

      @@suckboytony9637 Agreed. I think a really big part is your weight distribution is a lot less forgiving on a snowboard than skis. I went from being a strong intermediate boarder to carving fairly confidently my first time skiing because I could keep my weight forwards OR backwards (or on the inner/outer edges) without wiping out. Plus if you catch an edge on skis you can transfer weight to the other foot and save yourself, which definitely saved me several times within the day. If you try to keep your weight back and ride timidly on a snowboard you can't really make a turn, and if you keep your weight too far forwards you'll catch an edge and crash hard.
      The advanced skier I swapped with for an hour never managed to carve and definitely couldn't stay standing for 100s of feet like the guy in this vid. Very impressive

The knowledge of edges, mountain slopes, and the physics of snow carries over but besides that literally nothing else lol. But i think the biggest difference for me was riding longboards with really loose trucks for a few years before I first snowboarded. also along with having that sense of how to fall to not hurt yourself, lot of new ppl just freeze up and slam into the ground once they start falling. Its like how pro skateboarders are really good at not hurting themselves when they fall, they know how to execute them.

    I did the exact same thing my first time, but without any pointers. It was the Middlebury Snow Bowl up in Vermont, a lifelong skiier with around ~20 years experience. A couple of my friends were beginners, so I decided to gut it out with them and try boarding (and a little selfishly, I didn't want to be waiting around for them all day). We went up and figured it out as we went.
    That first day feels like you've had your ass kicked, literally and figuratively. And your wrists just kinda go numb. I was probably lucky not to get injured, I should have taken a lesson or started on something easier at least. But once you get the hang of turning it's a beautiful feeling. I stuck with snowboarding after that. I love skiing but boarding brings me even more joy.

    As someone who has been skiing for the last 20 years... I just learned how to snowboard yesterday and it was not as hard as I expected. After about 4 hours both me and my friend could turn both directions, control our speed, and make it down a blue run no problem. My fiance on the other hand could not. My friend who is also learning to ski said it was way easier than skiing, so I think it's a person by person thing. My fiance said skiing was easier to learn, but me and my friend think snowboarding was. He can't turn both directions on skis, my fiance and I have both been skiing for ages, so I think we got one person from each camp in our little sample size.

    That was pretty darned impressive! Myself on the other hand: Tried snowboarding once (intermediate skiier). There were no lessons available on the day I was going. ...All the tutorial videos in the world wouldn't have mattered. I didn't just fall down; I fell up, down, backwards, forwards, everywhere. And that was on the bunny slope!! Definitely going to try it again, but will be booking a lesson for sure.

    I'm probably a little less experienced in skiing than him, doing it for a decade, and I've tried snowboarding for literally a minute once, but this is giving me the confidence to try it, skiing came naturally bc I used to do hockey so let's hope skateboarding plus skiing experience had make it easy on me. I'll have to try soon.

    good to see someone who's ripping it on their first day still struggles with toe edge all the time because that's also what causes me the most problems while learning. every single toe edge turn is scary because it's what causes me the most falls. and they hurt the most too.

    Did the same thing learning snowboarding after a lifetime of skiing. Took the seat chair to the top of a red slope, first thing I did was run 20m straight and then tried turning. Then repeat that....again and again.
    Send it... that's the only way to learn.
    After half distance of that first slope, I knew how to do consecutive turns. My only regret is not wearing wrist guards because I was sore like crazy for a few days.

We went to this little restaurant/diner upstairs at the lodge when she started making convo with the 2 workers there! As we were finishing up and leaving back to the hill, she was telling those nice older ladies that it was my first time ever being on a ski hill.. they both kinda paused and looked at eachother and one of them, exclaimed "then what the hell's he doing wearing snowboarding boots?!"

    The irony of when it was mentioned "I can see how it's so easy to catch a toe edge and break your wrist" then gave a shoutout to "Mike", considering the first time I ever went snowboarding I did what was not recommended around the 840 mark of not going up on your first time. I did that exact thing with a buddy. I caught a really bad toe edge on some ice and shattered my wrist into many pieces, ironically enough my name is also Mike.
