The biggest problem with Federation Force is that Nintendo actually thought they could pull it off without addressing the lack of mainline titles for over 6 years, releasing it on Metroid's 30th anniversary without acknowledging the celebratory year for the franchise and refusal to address the plans for the future of the series. Many fans saw this as the final nail in the coffin, "if Federation Force doesn't sell, we'll never see a new Metroid title ever again, but if it doe sell, Metroid will never be the same". Boycotting the game and letting the series die, leaving behind only the great memories behind while mourning the existence of Other M seemed like a far better alternative to making this title sell well and encourage Nintendo to keep working on Other M-alikes or continue the spin-off.

    • @sabletooth
      @sabletooth 5 лет назад +23

I wouldn't say it failed in every way.
Other M, if it weren't a Metroid title, would've stood on its own as a pretty decent game. It's just that the Metroid series inherently has produced mostly good to great games that a more mediocre title looks comparably awful.
Other M's got some pretty solid gameplay, and it also had a whole bunch of really cool story beats. The problem was that the execution of these story beats was lackluster at best, which led to the absolutely poor conveyance of scenes like the infamous Ridley encounter, and also poor writing for certain characters such as Adam, and even Samus herself.
I think it gets way too much flak, and the good aspects of it go unacknowledged because of the reputation it has.
(Mind you I'm not saying Other M is good by any stretch - as said, I think it's a flawed, mediocre title, but I do think that there were some things about it that weren't a dumpster fire)

Donkey Kong is a better Metroid game than Other M. Being a "better Metroid game than Other M" isn't hard. It's one of the few games that would've been terrible even if it was a standalone title rather than trying to hijack the Metroid name for cash, because of the shitty unworkable controls. If it had been locked to a 2D plane it would've been ok but still not great.

I'd say the timing is really what caused all the hatred towards this game.
Nowadays, with the franchise back in motion, such a game wouldn't attract so much negative reactions. Though there are issues to address.
The main issue is how the game wasn't properly designed for single player unlike Star Allies which does take single player into account. Enemies should be scaled to the number of players, bosses' health should be scaled to the number of players and so on.
One thing that the game could take from Star Allies are the allied NPCs. Have the player be backed up by Federation troops even in single player. Though, when there are NPC Federation troops, the player(s) should have the ability to give orders to them.
Hey! On the subject of commanding Federations troops, I just got a brilliant idea :
A Valkyria Chronicles based game about Federation Troops. Imagine this : a full scale battle Federation forces versus an army of Space Pirates. A battle of wits and strategies where the slightest of mistakes can and will lead to total annihilation. Especially if big villains such as Ridley and Kraid are involved.

I was a kid when I got this game. I feel like they used this game to attract a wider younger audience and it worked. I loved this game as a kid. When I saw the announcement for the game I was so hype and couldn’t wait for it to come out. I was lucky enough to have an Xbox to play halo but I still loved halo so much. So when I saw this I sunk my teeth in and couldn’t let go. I even played blast ball with my siblings communicating and try Harding. My favorite strat was to just shoot at the enemies to stun them while someone scored the goal. I really liked this game and I honestly wish it had gotten more love.

I remember when i first saw blast ball, and I told my friends who were watching the trailer that the characters looked like GF troops, and then a week later it was revealed to be fed force and I was really worried because they focused on marketing blast ball over metroid, which imo is partly why the game failed, if it was announced as a GF trooper sim spinoff in the first place, I would be more eager to go out and get it as a metroid fan, and not as a huge soccer fan. honestly the game is pretty fun and even playing alone can be a fun challenge, doing the work of 4 people to really earn those gold medals, or going the lone wolf strategy and basically one shot everything

One thing you didn't mention was the ability to use drones if you play in single player. It definitely makes the game WAY harder when you don't. You can basically adjust the difficulty by how many you take with you on a certain mission, which allows for more replayablility. But it's definitely a party game that just has options for single player rather than the other way around.
I enjoyed the story and the teaser at the end if you manage to complete certain side missions. I think Prime 4 is going to reveal some pretty amazing stuff. Until then, Monster Hunter World has been eating up my time while the build-up to Iceborne has given me a chance to unlock all types of stuff.

Metroid Prime: Federation Force is, essentially, what happens when you work on a game (good or bad), and release it at the worst possible time. This can be a draught in main-series titles, news about said titles, or recent/ongoing controversies with the company. I like to point at the tragedy of Metal Gear Survive as my comparison:
Kojima leaves Konami and a slew of toxic work environment reports come flying in alongside the rise of Metal-Gear themed Pachinko Machines? Time to make Metal Gear Survive. A game that is, in actuality, a pretty fun (but limited) survival game that uses the Fox engine and Phantom Pain as a base to great effect...but the controversy leading up to the game only accents it's flaws and washes out the positives.
    - So when a new Metroid title is announced after ten or so years (this number applies to many fans discounting Other M, and using Prim 3: Corruption as the 'Last Metroid Title Released') that is neither an upcoming main title or a rerelease of an older class that looks like a DS title and goes entirely against the grain as to what a Metroid game is known to be? Chaos ensues.

  • @MagicMaster667
    @MagicMaster667 5 лет назад +11

Never had a grudge against this one, even at it's reveal in 2015.
I just replayed any of the Metroid Prime's or the GBA ones when I was in a Metroid mood.
This way, I didn't have a "drought" mindset. I just took it as a spin-off, along the lines of Metroid Prime Pinball. -(besides, if I was starved for any series, it was f-zero)-
Truly a shame that Federation Force will have to live with its stigma, and that "tone-deaf" reputation for the foreseeable future it seems... *sigh* All because of some bad timing.

I didn’t pick this one up for a couple reasons. 1: I wasn’t super into Metroid at the time. The only game I had played was Zero Mission and while I love Zero Mission, I hadn’t played anything else.
2: It was a co-op only game. I love co-op, it’s one of my favourite things in games. However, I only know one person I can reliably play 3ds with, and he doesn’t like Metroid games.
I would’ve loved to pick this one up, but didn’t for these reasons.

The problem wasn’t that it was a bad game. In fact, the opposite, at least in my opinion. It was actually a pretty fun spin-off of Metroid Prime, if not a little too focused on Multi-Player. The problem was the timing. After years of the Metroid series not having a new game, this game’s release was rather tone-deaf to the fanbase. I’m not saying Federation Force doesn’t deserve to exist, unlike a certain Wii game, (*cough*Other M*cough*). It just should’ve come out at a _very_ different time.

This is going to be a long comment.
I agree with you wholeheartedly. I think this game got more flack than what it deserved. I got it on sale and originally played it briefly on the regular 3DS XL before upgrading to a "new" 2DS XL.
I picked up where I left off about a month-month and a half ago. First thing I noticed and enticed me to keep playing was the "c nub" on the "new" model. While the motion control aiming worked quite well and sufficed, it's something that is all good if I'm playing in private versus playing on bus, train, or any form of public transportation and seeming odd moving my system around causing any unwanted attention from strangers. (Especially anyone with not so nice intentions to grab my system.) The "c nub" remedied that. Then there's the amiibo functionality which I know were mostly cosmetic but also added weapon mods, but it offered the smoothest interface. (Granted this can be said for any amiibo supported game.) In short, while MPFF could play on a regular model, it seemed like it was meant to be played on a "new" model. Also, completely agree on how the comparison between MPFF and MPH.
Then there's the multiplayer model. Gotta agree for the most part, it's a game that's suited best for multiplayer, especially close by coop so as to better communicate with your partners. (Though I did check to see if there were any players online to no avail.) As I was playing certain levels trying achieve each goal so as to get enough points to get 3 medals, I kept thinking this would be a lot easier with others. Now granted you can put the solo mod on so as to increase attack and defense, but you would then lose the opportunity to get points for not using said mod. (I think it's worth 5,000 points.) Though there were some cases where you could get 3 medals while still using the solo mod, I tried whenever possible not to use said mod in my solo playthroughs.
Honestly, getting 3 medals for each level is what got me to replay levels. In that sense, it felt like a Nintendo game akin to a Yoshi platforming game. And not surprisingly enough, at times it felt like a Luigi's Mansion game. (Same developer, makes sense.) In that respect, it actually made me like the game just as much.
Overall, I think Next Level games did a good job in making a cooperative squad-based handheld sci-fi fps given the technology/system on which they were developing said game on. What I think killed this game was the title of it. The Metroid name has such high expectations from it's fans and rightfully so. I'm not saying it would have done better sales wise without the Metroid name, but it didn't help either. If my friends got the game too, I could easily see it being that much better of a game similar to how I enjoyed Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D. (Wanted to put Heroes of Ruin in this list as we did have fun, but for the wrong reasons, ie, commenting on how ugly and underdeveloped the game was.)
Anyway, all this said, you got yourself a subscriber. Thank you for posting this video.

Ok but here's the thing- if it HAD done well, then Nintendo wouldn't had learned their lesson. I believe we have to back up the projects we want and the ones we prioritize so that developers provide said experiences. If it went well for them, who knows where we'd be developing the mainline series. And if not that, we at least let them know that in the future we'd appreciate mainline games, not spinoffs.

I would have preferred a Wii U Metroid game with similar mechanics and story as "Metroid Prime: Federation Force" but with much more realistic visuals. This is somewhat the same though I had when that game was announced. It should have been a game where all four Federation soldiers equal one Samus, with each one having their own specific abilities (one does morphball related thing, one does missiles, etc.) in a survival situation add to it similar mechanics as “Pikmin 3”, where one person can control with ease multiple characters and it would have been such a unique and hopefully satisfying experience.

A genre which can be fun on paper but on the 3DS of all systems?! And finally, a game that is supposed to be played with three other people who need the game themselves to play. Like, WTF? If they wanted at all costs to release such a game, at least create a new franchise or add it to an existing one that is, idk, not Metroid, the super niché singleplayer exploration game franchise that usually doesn‘t sell well at all. How many people even bought this outside of the three Metroid fans who actually enjoyed it? How would you even find other players, this isn‘t Smash Bros or Pokémon or Mario Kart, this is some mediocre multiplayer fps on the 3DS with the Metroid name slapped on to it…

I feel like a lot of couch co-op Nintendo games have that issue where playing them alone feels like a chore and they're only really fun with friends. Super Mario 3D World is one that comes to mind. Hopefully they'll be able to figure that out one of these days, especially if Federation Force gets a sequel. People are always replaying Metroid games to try and finish them faster each time and I bet that kind of model could really benefit a solo adventure in these multiplayer focused games. 3: Better focus, some parts felt like it wasn't fully sure what it wanted to be.

If they at least showed the Metroid Prime 4 logo before showing this game then fans probably would not mind so much and it probably would have sold better.

I really wanted to like this. I wanted to play as a marine in that universe for a while. I thought this would satisfy that itch. Loadout customization is already very cool, I wish you could have customized more though to be akin to halo 3. There was a ton of cool concept art from metroid prime on these guys and they could have fed off that for different helmets, cores etc. I got the game Christmas that year, booted it up, and could never find a room to join. I remember there was two 1/4 rooms, but I kept getting errors and was forced solo. I know the 3ds would never have ran the fluidity of halo styled combat well, but I was still disappointed. It's not bad, just wish it could have been more than what felt like shovelware.

Can you make a video on the concept of a Metroid Fusion sequel? Everyone is always talking about the next Prime game, where there hasn't been a true 2d sequel in years.

I didn't even know there was more to it than just the 'football' kind of game (blast ball). It certainly looks better / more enjoyable than what I thought it was, but still I completely understand the backlash because it had been 8 years at the time without even a glimpse of a new prime game, a full platform lifecycle was skipped (wii u), and then they have the audacity to come up with a seemingly completely irrelevant game carrying the metroid prime name while still not saying a word about an actual entry (single player adventure) of the series

federation force would have been received much better if they had just told us that an actual metroid was coming in like a year or two, these games go through development for years I know for a fact that samus returns was already in development by the time federation force came out, if they had just told people about it, people might really have liked this game on it's release

Federation Force was severely limited by being an online co-op puzzle game for the 3DS meaning one mission was cut short by one player taking the only zipline over a ravine and not realizing he had to shoot a button repeatedly to form a light bridge allowing us to cross and instead took on a gauntlet of enemies alone. Also trying to shoot a ball into a hole is very difficult with high ping.

Me and three other friends bought this on launch day, and I couldn’t make it through the first mission without getting very frustrated so I put it away and haven’t picked it up. I was the one most into metroid of the group. This has inspired me to eventually get the group together again and give it another go, only one of my friends actually beat the game and I feel bad making him do everything solo those few years ago. Love your content as always!
