I got rid of over 80% of stuff, because I am 65 single and work full time. I have 3 grown daughters all living out of state from me. If I pass on, I don't want my daughters to have to clean out my clutter they don't want. So I am doing the best I can, to fill my small car up with loads of stuff to Goodwill. Hopefully, when that day comes, that I moved on to heaven without my Stuff, my daughters will appreciate this. Brigitte in Tulsa Oklahoma

The best "side effect" of decluttering for me has been - it is SO MUCH easier and quicker to dust and vacuum. The house always looks better now.

What makes me feel good purging things is knowing I don’t have to do it perfect the first time. It’s a process and any progress is still progress. Also the time it takes to get stuff out. I think how much time that stuff is taking to keep track of and clean and house in general. And how freeing it is that this is the last time to deal with it before getting stuff out of my house

  • @bethjloveswax

I love the idea of finishing Decluttering before organizing. I think that’s where I’ve fallen short sometimes because things will stay organized for a little while but they always turn into a mess again because there is just too much stuff. I’ve been Decluttering for about a year now, so I really hope I’ll finish up soon.

When your channel switched to minimalism, I quit watching. Then 2020 had me needing to control things i.e purge my house from top to bottom. So I came back to your channel, and read joshua becker, and watched the minimal mom. My house can breath again, I have more free time, less stress and don't bring more clutter into the house with continually shopping.

I love the Minimal Mom - watch all of her videos and found your channel through her January Decluttering playlist. You asked where we are at. I’m a returning to minimalism person - which I know is rare lol - but I minimized huge about 8 years ago and then life hasn’t gone as planned and health issues set me back to where I was before I had started the first time. The last couple months I’ve had enough energy to get going again though I’m still only functioning at about 80% because of health issues. Feels good to make any progress :).

I just recently found your channel and idk where you have been all my life you’re so amazing! Iv been on a minimalist journey since 2016 but it has changed since I now am married and live on my own with my husband it’s definitely a different ballgame having a whole house of stuff. We are in the middle of renovations and every time a renovation is finished we do a declutter of that room that has been done. Also it’s so weird that you can “feel” when your home is too “cluttered” it’s like now we feel comfortable having a certain amount of items.
    Positive vibes from Laredo Texas!

I pick one space a week and just spend an hour or so clearing out all the things I no longer use. It's slow going but gentle and I can still see the progress which encourages me to choose the next "problem area" that needs tackling. I know that I can go back to that same space later and go through again with a more focused lens but for now it's just skimming the obvious. I also follow Dawn and Abundantly minimal to get inspired for the next clutter clear out.

Rubber bands go in the desk or office supply cabinet. Chapstick goes in my purse. Lotion in the bathroom or my night stand. Batteries in the battery and lightbulbs bin in the supplies cabinet. Screw drivers in the tool bag.

Sarah Therese, Dawn The Minimal Mom, Erica Lucas, Ashlynne Eaton and You have all been great inspiration for me this past year. I have learned what works best for me right now is just going with the natural flow. If I am working on some regular cleaning in an area and I find that there is some easy decluttering in front of me, I take the time to purge/ organize until I come to a plate of being stuck. I've learned not to push past that point because it can bring frustration. Then, when I come back to finish that process I started, it is a bit easier because I have given it some thought. It's kinda fun to hear what "system" works for others. I have definitely recieved some good ideas from watching these types of videos.

I wish I could get rid of 80 percent of our stuff. I started my minimalist journey with Dawn at the Minimal Mom about 2 years ago. Love her. It was easy to begin because I knew anything that was in bins or boxes from our last move (2015) that was still in boxes could be donated. Then I just plowed through stuff. Lots of things I thought I needed, I didn’t. I am a super organized person who has ocd... so basically over the last 2 years “stuff” has gone out the door. Hubby has stuff I’d like to go and is about ready to board the declutter train. ( garage and basement) When that stuff is gone, we will hit the 80 % for sure! I have enjoyed the process. This last year even got my daughter on board. She works at a Thrift store...even better!! My fear is if anything happens to either me or my hubby, I don’t want him or I ( or my daughter) to feel overwhelmed with what stuff is left. Thank you for today’s video.

In my area people have started putting out "leave what you can, take what you need" two drawer filing cabinets. Anyone in the comunity can participate. These have been a game changer. There are 2 by me. I can and have filled me truck to the brim and in 2 stops that took ... maybe 10 min total got rid of everything. Then 2 days later come back with a whole other truckload and do it again. It feels so amazing to know that someone else is treasuring these things now. Im getting there but i have a long way to go. This is a process and I have been at it for 3+ years and this is the year to "hit" bottom and get it decluttered to a much smaller amount! For me it started with a capsule wardrobe as I use to have totes of clothes to rotate for the seasons. I got tired of doing this and we moved out of a house to an Apt and i did the first declutter of clothes and we did not like the apt and moved again to yet a smaller apt. Now I love the size of apt and i finally got my clothes to hang on the rod and in drawers without storing anything. It was hard if you like clothes, so i created a "uniform" of sorts and I am so happy and I no longer like to clothes shop as I keep a list of what I need and shop only when time to update wardrobe. This included shoes and purses. (there was way too many). I also learned to use black trash bags in order not to see what I was giving away. I would even line the boxes as to not see. I have not place to store so it takes more time as not all thrift stores are open or will take donations. I also advertise on Facebook Market place for items I know people would come and get. Thanks for sharing and I think I will go back and do some catch up videos.

I like to watch The Minimal Mom on RUclips, but I would not be happy living that minimally. I love most of my "stuff", and my husband and I have worked hard for what we have. Love your video !

I completely agree...for me, a more moderate approach to minimalism works best!! And yes, decluttering is an ongoing process for sure!

Mostly just for my mental health. Lol. I don’t have a “plan,” I just know I don’t want to be bogged down with constant chores and too tired to enjoy whatever else might be a lot more fun or at least a lot less sucky. I’d like to be able to be more spontaneous when the mood strikes me to go do fun stuff. You just can’t really do that or hardly get in the right frame of mind when stuff and chores are in your way and you have moment by moment aggravations and ten tons on your shoulders. I think I’ve gotten close to 50% or so. I started with Minimal Mom but I like this channel and Clutterbug and Dana. Loved the idea of the test. I’m a cricket.

Great tips! I’ve been trying to minimize our stuff for almost a year. It’s not going well. Time is a big issue but so if my ridiculous sentimental attachment to EVERYTHING. Ugh!

Oh I totally understand that! On top of that, I read that as people age and their memory decluttering best, sentimental things can help retrieve memories. *sigh*

Just declutter a couple of easy items at a time and see how you feel! Even decluttering just a few things can make you feel lighter!! :)

How did you come up with that number that you got rid of. I have spent 7 years decluttering. We have gone from 2,000 square feet to 320 for the last two years. We still have a few big pieces of furniture in a storage shed waiting until we finish this time in the tiny apt. I know we have so little compared to what we have now but I have no idea of the amount. I do wish I had counted everything.

    • @FancyThatwithCandice
      @FancyThatwithCandice  3 года назад +1

It's an estimate...We decluttered about 50% in the first 6 months, then moved and decluttered about 30% more (roughly 40 carloads to the DI...literally thousands of items!)

I found you as I was looking for inspiration- starting this past dec I’ve kept a notebook and written / numbered what I’ve decluttered - so far I’m at 219 objects . I’m trying to see if I can to 500 - I’m doing it kind of like minimum challange but I don’t lock myself into certain number for certain date and no 30/31 day limit.

    Identify your "why"
Have a plan "when are you going to declutter" how frequently. Write it down for accountability.
Find a donation center. Make an "appointment" on your calendar for dropping off donations on schedule.
Declutter the easiest items first. Get rid of duplicates, and things you haven't used. Don't start with sentimentals.
Think of an item "can my routine do without this ? Would it make it easier?"
Keep a "maybe pile" for the harder items that you're not sure about that you're having a hard time letting go of.

It is clear there is an agenda going on with minimalism, we are being groomed to live with less and in much smaller less desirable dwellings. The main problem I see with this mindset is purging stuff you already own. If it gets donated or sold that is great, but when it gets tossed in the trash it is adding to the growing land fills which is unacceptable. I can see no longer buying crap you do not need and rejecting lusting after the newest latest greatest item which will be out dated before it arrives at your house. I live in Florida where so many people are caught off guard looking for food and water and other free hand outs the very next day after a major hurricane or other event like this damn pandemic. I can guarantee you regardless of what others claim that they feel better by purging this stuff they will regret it once the dollar they have in their pocket or bank account is now worthless and now need the very stuff they tossed gave away or sold. Ask any survivor of the great depression what is the most valuable lesson they learned and I bet it will be waste nothing!!! So yeah I am all in for not buying overseas made crap I do not need but I will happily have my stuff to use sell or barter with when it is our turn to deal with the fallout of this pandemic. and all these people that have nothing will be the first starving zombie like idiots looking for a hand out that will never come. Keep in mind I agree crap is crap if it serves no useful purpose it is time for it to go but if can be used in times of great need make sure to keep it organize and inventory it so you will know what you have and where it is. most of all be prepared to defend what you have and your family because they will come for your stuff.

Love it! We did the same 2 years ago. Donated 80% of our things, 3 full two-car garages of items. We were getting ready to move and the moving company said each box cost about $50 to move. Each time I packed a box I looked at the contents and asked myself if it's worth it, do I use it, do I need it, can I buy this new for $50? Made it so easy to let go. Strangely enough, out of all the items we let go I only purchased one thing again after the move.

Around my area, the Goodwill's donation center closed twice because people were home and decluttering like crazy perhaps, so definitely search for a couple and have their contact information on hand to have some options. Some of our local shelters for kids are not accepting clothing items and its a shame because I have so much nice kids clothing
