Not until you wrote this here did I connect it with the killer... who mowed other people’s lawns to facilitate his predation. That’s what Marty assumed about Rust but not the killer. Just another piece of great writing, paired with the line about “never looking in someone’s eyes without knowing whether he did it” right before looking the killer in the eyes and not suspecting.

Talking about Marty and his present day interviews juxtaposed with what actually happened in the past, is a really real done take on like a small town type of person. I think he likes to control the narrative of his own story, even if it's not the truth because he's constantly thinking about how he come across to others. Present day he wants people to think of him as a good detective, so he's mister cool calm and collected. He makes a scene at Lisa's to make a point because he needs her to know she can't do stuff like that to him. He's super aggressive with Rust because he's partially afraid he's going to unravel the whole thing and partially because he's projecting things onto the situation.
It's kind of like a politician only with them they have loftier goals in mind. He does this because of his own ego/self interests.

At the end of a very long day, one of the worst days I've ever had, I finally made it home and what is the first thing I did? Well, first I poured myself a big glass of ice water because I was extremely thirsty. But the second thing I did was get on RUclips to see if the Schmitts had posted their video of Ep. 3. They hadn't (this was 10:00 EDT) and I thought, "well, of course". But then I realized they live in a different time zone (I think) and there was still a glimmer of hope.

@@theDarkness558 yes, what Gino said nicely done. like I said I enjoy how subtle it is in that the story in no way suffers if you don't get the references, and if you do get the references there's still an element of personal interpertation to it all. we know Rust is prone to flashbacks because of his past but he's adamant his flashbacks with the birds forming a pattern or the maelstrom in the final episode were different. was it just a coincidence his haluciniations were overlaping so well with the "religion" of the child abductors?
also *SPOILER* the original ending of the show would have Rust and Marty get lost in the maze, never to be seen by anyone again but it was changed due to being WAY too bleak. make of that what you will.

I don't think that's fair to scare them off of season 2) The main problem with it were our high expectations: we wanted the same vibe and quality. S2 is different in a good way. If you think about it as separated project (it actually is, 'cause TD is an anthology) you still get amazing performances by actors (Farrell, McAdams and Vaughn did a great job imho), perfect cinematography and really complex but catchy story about rotten corrupted government, family issues and people getting caught in this sad vortex. I didn't like S2 either: I watched it right after S1. Some time passed and I decided to give it a second shot and, damn, that was some magic experience. Just give it a second try, and I hope you won't be disappointed!

I love the pastor in this episode. A. Just because it’s such a great performance of that type of Revival minister. And B. Because of where his story ends up.
They could have gone the easy route with his character, but they chose the path where he’s at heart, a good man, who gets viewed like a “used car salesman” because of what he does for a living.

When Woody Harrelson says don't mow my lawn I immediately had flashbacks to Kingpin when he hits Randy Quaid and shouts "take that you sonofabitch, you don't mow another guys lawn!"

the rural, impoverished, drug-infested areas of america really adds to the unsettling, believable nature of the story. if you watch some of the documentaries on some of the old school serial killers, it's eerily similar

I don't want to ruin anything with a spoiler but be on the lookout for one heck of an action sequence in the next episode. It's super intense and will have you on the edge of your seat...so much so that you might miss that it was done ALL IN ONE LONG TAKE! It's incredible.

Like .... when I first watched this shit, I was ALL over it. But the ending of this episode literally had me leaning towards the TV saying "what. the. fuck" at the end. That shit gave me chills and I was even more hooked.

One of my favourite shots in this episode is from inside the car when the guys from the tent revival help to push their car out of the mud. An innocent moment but full of tension.

If you liked True Detective, you owe it to yourselves to watch The Bridge (2011 - the original Danish/Swedish version, not any of the remakes). You will never meet a pair of more well written and acted detectives. Rust and Marty are pretty close to be fair, but Saga and Martin are just amazing. Subtitles obv, but you'll get used to them fast given the nature of the show.

    • @Johnny_Socko

I actually quite liked the US adaptation of The Bridge for its unique setting, fine actors, and its portrayal of a marginalized society. However...the villain was *so* horribly conceived & written that it just made me hate the overall show. Good writing should make you hate the villain; bad writing only makes you hate the people that wrote the villain.
