Quick movie recommendation for you guys: EdTv (1999) Starring... you guessed it, Matthew McConaughey & Wood Harrelson as brothers! It's good; kind of a light, funny Truman Show.
The oner was a 6:03 long. The planning and setup they had to do was crazy. A lot of the extras were crew members pulling double duty like the pan up to the helicopter was so a makeup person could run up and add some bruising to Ginger's face to maintain continuity. They did 7 attempts to get the shot.
The first time I watched this episode with my cousins, during that scene where Marty walks into the bar wearing that oversized trucker cap and the corduroy jacket my youngest cousin went, "How do you do fellow bikers." I totally lost it.
That last long take... I'll just quote imdb: "The final six-minute sequence, which follows Rust Cohle through the housing project, consists of only one very long take. Hundreds of staff were required to film the scene, including hidden make-up artists who had to apply make-up in seconds while the camera was focused elsewhere. "
All those are good but I stand by my statement. There was a lot of moving parts going on in the background. Logistically that's a lot to direct. All it takes is one extra missing his cue to mess up thar shot.
@@TomTomson81 True Detective did it first lol, Daredevil just copied it and they're not even real one takes, it's edited to seem that way, just like the Mr. Robot episode. this tracking shot made history, nothing like this was ever done on television prior to it. and it's shot on FILM, people, that means limited runtime (unlike digital) and big, heavyweight cameras that are very difficult to operate.
It's not shown in this video but I love the little meta moment when Woody Harrelson asks the bartender (played by Nick Pizzolatto the writer of the series) "Why are you making me say this shit, man?!?"
"All the dick-swagger you roll and you can't spot crazy pu$$y?" That's one of my favorite of Rust's shots at Marty. Always gets a laugh because it's so true. Anyone else have a favorite from this episode?
The Yellow King is a reference to Robert W. Chamber's book, "The King in Yellow." Later, H.P. Lovecraft integrated the King in Yellow and Carcosa into his mythos, as have more modern mythos authors.
@@michaelsegriff3362 The book is a strange one, since it is really just a collection of short stories. I actually like "The Demoisele D'ys" the best. I don't see how the last three stories (about streets) adds anything to the collection. However, for the Yellow Sign stuff, I like them all. While "The Mask" and "The Yellow Sign" are genuinely creepy, "The Repairer of Reputations" is kind of funny; how much more unreliable of a narrator can one get than a delusional person? Thematically, only the first four stories should have been included, and the rest should have been put into a different collection.
@@hanng1242 thats a pretty insightful book review. I’ve read “The Mask” and “The Yellow Sign” and agree that they are very creepy. Now, you’ve got me interested in reading “The Repairer of Reputations”, and “The Demoisele D’ys”. I’m going to get on it soon.
The song in the title sequence “Far from any Road” , is supposedly about a mythical desert cactus, which blooms once every 10,000 years, and if you watch it bloom, you go insane. There are some other interpretations of it, some of which are seemingly based on misunderstanding of the lyrics. Anyway, a great song and title sequence.
Bartender at the strip club was Nic Pizzolatto, who created and wrote the series. Carcosa and the Yellow King was first mentioned in Dora Lang’s diary, from the Ranch.
Coming from someone who has watched this season probably 20+ times, that 6-minute shot never gets old. Just absolutely amazing. That episode won 2 Emmys because of that scene.
Insane, right ? It was like a full length movie in one episode ! Episode 5 is basically part 2 of this episode. That wasn't the shoot out mentioned in episode 3. Things are building up. Keep the seat belts on. Lol Really enjoying your reactions.
With everything going on in this series, it's the dynamic between Rust and Marty, which makes this whole series so memorable. It is also a reminder of the debauchery and crime that exists in modern America. I know it's meant to be a drama, but I don't think it is that far from the truth of the situation in parts of America. No offence meant at all here, but I am reminded of a great quote by a great comedian in "Al Murray - the pub landlord", when he said "All you need to know about America, is that it was a good idea........, that's got out of hand" lol
I see almost nothing in this show that's fictional, knowing especially the preschool cases on which some of it is based. Pizzolatto is so well read it's almost suspicious.
"Cassilda's Song" Along the shore the cloud waves break, The twin suns sink behind the lake, The shadows lengthen In Carcosa. TBR, what would you do if someone mowed your lawn?
The most NPC commentary i’ve ever seen
"let him see his kids again" - kind of says something about the default societal assumption that women own their children and "let" fathers see them.
Audio is horrible. I've listened to enough others to know it's an anomaly. Had to stop after 3 minutes.
