I'd imagine the reason why the Aqua Grunt takes a step back is because he is cowering away from you more than anything else. Since this is the same grunt from before in PetalBurg Woods, it's pretty safe to say he'd rather not lose to bugs a second time.
31:52 yeah, that's the main problem with Shedinja. There's a bunch of attacks that based on type alone shouldn't be able to damage it, but still do. Future Sight and Hail being the top annoyances in a Hoenn playthrough.
The thing with the letter to Steven actually holds up with the in game mechanics, you can't use pokenav while in a cave so thats why he couldn't rewch Steven
Armaldo is actually one of my favourite bug type designs, but I was kinda disappointed to find that it is slow af. Still, pretty bulky, pretty strong attack, hope it will be useful.
I love it too. It’s my favourite fossil. It’s design is amazing, with the weird anomalocaris head and upper body from its pre-evolution, the red eyes and 2 additional eyes on the sides of his head, the horseshoe crab thorax, the winglike structures attached to it and the more T-Rex like lower body, the giant claws and the spikes on its tail. It’s such an interesting combination of weird components. Also the rock type makes it very useful against a lot you wouldn’t expect a bug to survive (like fire and flying).
This nuzlocke really showcased your ability to strategize battles. The bug type really relies on status conditions and strategy more than brute strength.
I’ve only been watching you for a short amount of time (since about October of 2021) but you got me through having a devastating COVID-19/pneumonia experience alongside losing my father the same month. I discovered nuzlockes through your channel while I was sick and these videos were the only thing that caught my interest during my illnesses. Every video is spectacular and I eagerly await each and every upload. Thank you for your dedication, Silph.
Wow; I don't know what to say - thanks for sharing this, it means a lot. I'm so sorry to hear what you've been through in the last few months. We'll hope for better times ahead and in the meantime there will be plenty of content heading your way! 🙏
Honestly, knowing how the coding for the GBA games were, the reason that Grunt steps back was probably as simple as choosing the wrong tile when placing the sprite for the first event (where he yells at you), having previously placed the NPC with the battle one pace back. Rather than deleting the NPC from the first event, they just slapped on him stepping back into his appropriate tile and called it a cowardly character moment.
Appreciate the perspective but you’re overthinking it. The reason he steps back is because he’s meant to be a grunt you’ve already previously battled, so he’s become afraid of you. It’s just a little joke on the part of the developers.
I like Shedinja, and it makes sense. A ghost spirit haunts the shell left behind by the newly evolved Ninjask, which is honestly just another pokedex horror story waiting to happen. I half expect a new entry to confess that shedinja are created by the displaced spirits of children victimized by the drowzee and driffloon lines.
I'd love to see a pokemon black hardcore nuzlocke with only ground types, because of the level caps, it would probably be the hardest nuzlocke because you can only use drilbur until castelia city, and even once you catch sandile, the next gym has both grass and bug attacks, so without and rock, ice, flying, fire or poison attacks, the gym would be painful
I don’t see nearly enough appreciation for ninjask I swear. I love its design and its such an unique Pokémon with baton pass. It did a great deal of good this run too because of it!
I remember using one during my recent Nuzlocke, and it was pretty good, though due to a little screw-up from me, I had to wait a bit before I could really use it to its fullest. It was the last Pokemon I had before I ultimately lost to Steven.
Till this day emerald holds a very special place in my heart so I’m really happy you choose this game for your challenge. Great run Silph!! It was really exciting and you did some great plays
Silph returns with my favourite game to watch nuzlockes. Nothing not to like here. Happy new year and hope you had a great break, but I’m glad you are back
Gotta love how surprisingly good bug can be, even in an older gen, I also wanted to mention I'd would be cool to see a pre-league team recap of stats and moves
As far as "simp" goes, I think he was using the original meaning, which is just a shortened form of "simpleton," which means "a foolish or gullible person." Apt for Archie's prideful personality, as he thinks everyone is underneath him.
Great run. Love seeing the Nincada line get some love, and I’m surprised just how balanced Shedinja was in this. It felt like it was very useful but not overly useable.
If it helps in future playthroughs: delaying Nincada's evolution for lvl 25 and teaching Ninjask Swords Dance after evolution will also give it to Shedinja. That only works in gens 3 and 4, though. Also, rock and ground don't resist Bug. Only Xatu's Flying-Type does on Tate & Liza's team.
I did a bug run in Alpha Sapphire (not nuzlocke though, I’m crap at those just a run) and yeah Armaldo really becomes your best friend, it’s sooooo goood. It’s literally amazing , I’d never given it much thought before but yeah these videos inspired me to start doing monotype runs and Armaldo has shot up my ranking as one of my favourite bug types
Can be very helpful against both Fire and Flying types which are otherwise big trouble for Bug types, so I wholeheartedly agree! Plus it's been a favorite of mine since I first used it in my Ruby playthrough way back in the day :D
Silph, you really played well through all of this, and deserve major kudos. I also just realized that the entire elite four seems balanced around beating Shedinja: Ice, Dark, and Ghost all go through wonderguard, and Drake has a good number of flying moves. Steven, as a Steel and Rock trainer, also seems well equipped to deal with Shedinja. I can't think that was a coincidence, but even still, you found a way to really leverage all your mons. I loved whenever Ninjask baton passed to Shedinja: so cute! They were once the same person! And they're still working together as one!
Little error I wanted to address, Tate and Liza actually have 3 Pokémon week to bug type moves, rock and ground don’t resist bug so Xatu is the only mon that’s neutral to bug. Love your videos silph! Sorry if I’m too nitpicky but 1) comments help the algorithm, 2) it’ll prevent you and others from making sub optimal choices in future.
Fun Fact: In this particular context, Archie actually called his grunts, "simps" as a way to call them idiots because when you really think about it, the word, "simp" is actually the shortened version of the word, "simpleton," which also means, "idiot."
It would be nice to see Silph do a fairy only hardcore nuzlocke, because it is currently the only type he hasn’t done, but I doubt a petition will do anything.
I’ve been waiting for nuzlockers to do bug type challenge and use A Bug’s Life as reference 🐛🐞 Edit : Damn Silph you got balls. I don’t think I ever see someone bring Beautifly to Pokemon League for nuzlocke challenge .
A small correction on your statement about Tate and Liza's team not being weak to Bug - Solrock, Lunatone and Claydol are all actually weak to Bug, with only Xatu being neutral.
Did Ground resist bug in gen 3 cause I'm pretty sure you could've hit every Pokemon except xatu with a stab bug super effective move cause rock didn't resist bug either
Have you considered a weather team based nuzlocke? A little niche but the idea is you have to take pokemon based around a weather type. This means the type(s) usually associated but also Pokemon that have abilities or other useful synergies. Like a sand team having Cacnea because of it's ability. The main drawback is that you also have to use the weather effect in every gym/important battle when possible.
Looking at nuzlockes, i feel like i've been playing pokemon at the baby-beginner level. There's so much you have to think about to even begin to attempt a 1-type playthrough
what I hate about confusion in the older games especially. is it seems like every time YOURE confused, yougit yourself every time, but every time the OPPONENT is confused, they land every hit. 🤣🤣
How about a hard-core nuzlocke with nature's. Choose one nature for the Play though. First Pokémon you find in a route is what you have to catch but you have to find one with the nature. Dups clause can be used
Welcome back Silph!! The absence of your Hardcore Nuzlockes have been felt deeply, I hope there's plenty more in 2022 especially with Legends of Arceus just around the corner :)
I was scared of Shedinja back in the day. I evolved my Nincada and it turned into a cool Shedinja. It was night so I saved and went to sleep. I wake up the next day. I was playing the game before going to school and in my party I see a Shedinja. I didn't remember catching it. It had 1 hp. And I read the pokedex entry, got even more freaked out, and released it.
Interesting idea for a future video, what if you partnered up with one of the other certain-type only nuzlockers and decided to do a soul link type only run. So you and someone else both pick two different types and try and beat the same game. I'd suggest maybe a Water-Normal or something else slightly more common pair that way it's a bit easier for the first one. I dunno how this'd work really, but I think it could be fun.
Love to see Bug types getting some love, they're usually pretty underrated. Nice vid! And by the way, now that BDSP was released, will you make the Sinnoh true power series and the Sinnoh true power tournament? I love the series, and I wanted to know if it'll come back.
A good strategy against Watson is to have a Persim Berry (soft reset until you get one the flower shop), give it to Shedinja, spam Double Team against Electrike, then use Sand-Attack and/or Spite against Magneton> Finish the battle using Fury Swipes and/or Leech Life (it will take a while...).
I dont remember if u can be called through pokenav while in cave? Maybe that was the reason why we needed to deliver the letter to Steven. If so… was he in this cave for very long? Was he hiding from his father? Gen 3 shows being a father is a hard task
I'd imagine the reason why the Aqua Grunt takes a step back is because he is cowering away from you more than anything else. Since this is the same grunt from before in PetalBurg Woods, it's pretty safe to say he'd rather not lose to bugs a second time.
Yeah I was thinking that they were doing the whole fake bravado thing but in actuality they step back because they're actually scared.
A year late but that seemed pretty obvious to me
Awesome!
Btw. The RAID bit ends at 3:23
31:52 yeah, that's the main problem with Shedinja.
Thats whst I commented. I think you'd find it pretty hard to accept calls in 2004 in a cave with the first I phone not coming out for 3 more years lol
rewch
Armaldo is actually one of my favourite bug type designs, but I was kinda disappointed to find that it is slow af. Still, pretty bulky, pretty strong attack, hope it will be useful.

So I am not the only one
I'm happy to see some Arnaldo appreciation. He's my favorite fossil too
He has swift swim. Can make him faster than pretty much everything.
What a name, too.
This nuzlocke really showcased your ability to strategize battles. The bug type really relies on status conditions and strategy more than brute strength.
That baton pass/ swords dance play to 🤌🤌

Loved the “A Bug’s Life” nickname scheme, well done
Now I gotta go watch it again lol, haven't watched that movie since my first kid was still in diapers
Silph: Which I nickname Heimlich.
Me: ...oh no.
These nuzlockes are great for Sunday mornings, especially when I don’t want to get out of bed
Hardcore agree. I am so comfy in bed in the dead of winter MN hitting my vape.
Especially in the uk when its 5pm and you still don't want to get out of bed
Was 4am Monday in Australia over here

More like Sunday Evening in my case, Considering I'm in Nigeria.

@@Allfath3r i dont understand how people are confused by this? Its so obvious hes afraid and tjats why he steps back like wtf is wrong with these ppl
Man, I swear no one appreciates how tedious this must be! Thanks Silph!
10:41 Seismic toss is like Night shade, doing damage equal to the users level so it bypasses defense boosts I'm pretty sure
Honestly I like change of Mover's pokemon at the start of pkm Emerald - it makes perfect sense, they are Norman's mons
I like Shedinja, and it makes sense. A ghost spirit haunts the shell left behind by the newly evolved Ninjask, which is honestly just another pokedex horror story waiting to happen. My life is already pain, but whats a little extra to try this for myself and see just how bad it can be 👀
@@kabxksb so how'd it go?

Metagross- Fine I will do it myself

Yeah, I was so confused when he said they weren't???
Wtf? Archie called them simps? How did I never recognize, realize or even just see in general before??? My world is shaken to its core
yes but “simp” being short for “simpleton” here, because the aqua grunts are morons lol

Wallace really called up Steven like “Hey, that kid has a Shedinja. You know what to do.” And Steven sent him a chunk of cobalt in thanks
There's a reason why Bug Catchers are so obsessed with Big types.
They're strong if you train them well.
I find it really cool how bug types tend to rely on setup/status to be good, and once they're set up, they are beastly
Lmao my dude seeing a aqua grunt walk a single step backwards and have have an existential crisis about it is the best thing I’ve seen all 2022
29:05 just xatu is neutral to bug, everyone else on their team is weak to bug
The aqua guy stepping back is just a little detail. He’s keeping a Pokémon hostage and tries backing away with the hostage.
Do you have plans to do a Fairy-type Hardcore Nuzlocke? I think that could be really interesting, but I'm not sure which game would be best for that.

I like using Scyther Jolly Nature with Technician. Along with Eviolite.
Everyone give silph some extra credit because he not only beat a game with just bug types but with a Shedinja which is almost useless👏👏👏
And in a nuzlocke too
I really like the change of taking on post game battles
