Jane, I needed a laugh this morning and your comments about germs jumping out the toilet and consumerism just gave me a chuckle. It's terrible the way big corporations and companies do what they do luckily us smart people ignore it 😊.
My lovely mum who passed away recently always said to me "your house needs to be clean enough to be healthy but dirty enough to be happy" and I live by these words.

Hi Jane and Mike, From Australia, (1) I have an all purpose soap solution handed to me by a 100 year old lady who passed recently. Take 1 bar of sunlight soap or generic version grate it into a lidded 20lt bucket add 1 or two litres of boiling water and dissolve the grated soap - then fill the bucket to within a couple of inches of the top and stir. Put on the lid and forget for about a week at least. You end up with a gel that you can wash dishes, clothes, yourself including hair, pets, cars and anything else you want to .If it is only for laundry I have replaced 1/2 the bar of sunlight with 1/2 bar of SARD soap grated. Sard soap is a product here in Australia sold in liquid, spray and hard soap as a pre wash stain solution .Probably sold under a different name else where .1/3 cup in a full load of washing- clothes are spotless.(2) If you want a room deodoriser buy a cheap spray bottle( or reuse) add 2 drops of scented oil (your choice)2 drops of liquid dish detergent and fill with water. If the nozzle becomes blocked at any time remove and put in hot water and pull the spray to bring the hot water through to dislodge the build up. (3)Dish detergent is often way too concentrated, and the cap allows too much to escape when you use it. I transfer 1/2 new bottle contents to another bottle and fill both bottles with hot water. Aggitate gently and leave for a couple of days. The dish soap 'breeds' and thickens for lack of a better word. and is still just as efficient. Hope this helps out someone

If you have orange, lemon & lime peel left over, put them into a bottle with some white vinegar & use that to clean, works like a charm. Also add a few drops of fragrance oil, such as peppermint or lavender to a wet cloth & pop in with your laundry so you don't need extra stuff to buy

A washing machine engineer once told me you shouldn’t use the quick cycle all the time. Occasionally he said to use a longer cycle as it rinses out any build up in the machine. It’s a good maintenance practice and so saves you money apparently.

If you have an animal feed store nearby, you can get bicarbonate in bulk (50 pound). If using for cleaning purposes even though it is "animal grade" it won't matter. And it is SOOOO much cheaper!!

I wash all my laundry in cold water using X-brand detergent as well as set my washing machine on gentle wash. I have been using the gentle cycle for almost 9 months and found that my clothes come out clean smelling. I am not sure who suggested using the gentle cycle but the clothes come out clean but also the cycle is shorter so you use less time to do your washing. When we have nice days, I line dry my clothes. You made a good point about not listening to manufactures. Another point is how one uses cleaning products. Too often people will not leave the cleaning product on surfaces so it can do its job. Leaving a product on for 3-4 minutes will easily sterilize and clean a surface with little or no effort. You made some very good points about what one can use to save money and what traps not to fall into about listening to ads. You are the best judge about your life and how to take care of your family. We all need to take stock from time to time to determine if something is really working for your family and you. Thanks again for sharing with us.

I remember watching an “Oprah “ episode years ago and she had on the top expert on infectious and bacteria diseases. He said we use way too many cleaners that are not appropriate for home use. She asked him what he cleaned his kitchen with and he said he uses dish soap and hot water. We take disinfectants too far these days because of misinformation and companies pushing products we don’t need. Great ideas and good for pointing out how we fall for shaming that we aren’t doing enough unless we use certain brands or products!

A quick tip to those with sensitive skin or who very allergic, if you write off to the manufacturers or email them they will send out samples for you to test to make sure you can use them which will reduce wasting money on something that you find you can't use. Have done this quite a bit when I've had to change brands cause they've changed ingredients and they've always been very understanding and helpful, same with shampoo, conditioner, shower gel etc.

You're so right! People use too many chemicals when cleaning. I don't use any detergent in my laundry unless the item is heavily soiled or new to the house. It's the agitation that gets the clothes clean anyway.

I now use the sheets of laundry detergent. Works in any temperature water. No more plastic bottles! I even cut the sheets in half and my laundry comes perfectly clean. It’s the agitation mainly that does the cleaning. Marketers are deciding how much we need and I think it’s up to us to decide what works best!

When I realized I could afford only one laundry per week (we had a coin slot machines at the place), I pretty quickly switched everything I could to materials that could be washed together. I started buying consentrated (not sure it's the right word?) detergent and used it about half the amount said on the package - no problems from using less of it. I also went back to treating stains before the wash so I wouldn't have to redo the loads. Hehee, and brought back aprons to my wardrobe - it's been decades and I still wear aprons most of my day because they are still very practical 😉. I have made detergent at home, but if you add numbers up, the summs were maybe few cents off each other. When it comes to other cleaning stuff - we buy them from specialist cleaning shop in bulk once per year. They are consentrated and they are meant for hostel cleaners, so they often don't carry scents and they add up to be cheaper than shopping for the deluted versions monthly. Plus, they tend to have long shelf life, so if you don't use it up fast enough, they still'll be good for years.

This was a great video with many great cleaning tips! I use liquid laundry detergent but I dilute it by half. Yes half! All my clothing comes out just as clean as before and I've been doing this for quite a while now. If clothes are especially soiled, I run them through a rinse first and then a regular wash. I find they are actually cleaner this way than using more detergent with one wash. Also I use the Back of a toothbrush with a dab of liquid laundry cleaner on greasy areas and spots before washing. Happy cleaning everyone!

As it is coming up to the winter time, wool jumpers actually do not require any washing, at all, to freshen then up you can hang them outside for a day and the wool will breathe in and out. Ideal days are when it is a little bit damp/ foggy or when there is a bit of a temperature drop. It also keeps the wool fabric in excellent shape for years to come. I know this from an expert who worked in textiles who used to wear one wool vest for many years day in day out, never washed just put outside and i always looked brand new.

I'd like to think that the current price hikes will be the end of those ghastly granules that are made for no good reason but to make laundry smell 'good'. What could be a better smell than the smell of freshly washed laundry after a good blow in the open air? I love many supermarket own brands of cleaning products, but I would make the observation that many cheaper washing up liquids will need more to make it effective. Sometimes the best is the cheapest in the long run, and for me, that's often washing up liquid, but not all come into that category. Lidl and Aldi are definitely the good guys with this. Great food for thought Jane and I guess we should all pause for thought and ask "Do I really need this"? And loving the tip for using a little fabric conditioner in your water for wiping surfaces.

When cooking, I like to clean as I go. If it’s not greasy, I use a damp cloth to wipe things clean. No cleaner at all, just water. I’m a vegetarian, so don’t have to consider bacteria, etc, from meat. Also, I have back issues, so to wash the floor, I lay a lg damp towel (water and a little dish detergent)on floor and “ scrub/dance” with my feet. I don’t rinse the towel, just throw it in the laundry. If I feel the floor needs an extra going-over, I’ll use another old towel. This method uses very little cleaner, not much water, and is easy on my back.

I enjoyed the cleaning tips video. My house has oak floors, tile and vinyl. On the vinyl I use Dawn dishsoap and white vinegar. The oak floors get Dawn and bathroom tile receive Dawn and hydrogen peroxide. All floors are vacuumed prior to mopping. On the laundry I use Nellies laundry soap which is pre-measured.The cost is .20 per load. I really like it because I don't have to lug around liquid laundry detergent. I use white vinegar as a fabric softener. Finally dry laundry on lines in the basement.

Another way to save money is to use white vinegar as your fabric softener. Your clothes smell fresh and clothes are soft. There is no vinegar smell on your clothing. Additionally, I bought a couple sets of cleaning cloths from a company in America called Norway. A set is two cloths...one for cleaning the surface and the other for wiping down. Now the reason I love these cloths is they are fantastic for cleaning windows. No cleaners.. just use water. The cloths are made with a special antibacterial material which self cleans when you hang up to dry. They last a good long time. They are a bit pricey but a couple sets allows you to use one for windows and one for kitchen. Maybe launder them once a month. You can also buy them on eBay. Great video!

Where I live there are several older retired householders, like me, who seem to enjoy showing off, unlike me, with their ultra tidy pristine homes, and similarly gardens, - not a leaf out of place, no suggestion of an unplumped cushion, and whilst I’m polite and complimentary, these things are actually a bit scary, and neurotic. I learnt a tip from auri katerinas channel to use a tub of scrub paste and also that dishwashing liquid works on most things. I also like her tip to add cling wrap over an oven to help it work better if it’s baked on grease - to use a lil scraper (in a microfibre cloth if worried about scratching). It was a game changer. I just use spray and wipe, power paste, toilet cleaner and floor cleaner. Vinegar, bicarb and dishwashing liquid if those first don’t work.
I also just use a lil washing liquid or powder… I line dry even in wet weather under my back yard awning. Using too much washing liquid or powder can ruin your machine.

Once in a while I have to use the dryer. I put my liquid laundry detergent in a dish detergent bottle with a squirt top. My washer is a front loader, so I use less detergent. I buy the largest size of my favorite laundry detergent, and just keep filling up my smaller bottle. Fabric softner is supposed to damage your washing machine over time! 😬 We also use metho in a spray bottle diluted with water and it's fab on the glass shower screens and windows (old tea-towels to clean with are amazing). We also use boiling water and metho in our bucket to mop our hard wood floors, it cleans beautifully without leaving a product build up or streaking.

I have used the Dollar Tree laundry detergent for years without a problem. I throw the lid (measuring device) right in the washer because it will be messy on the plastic bottle since there is not a place for the small amount of leftover detergent to drip back in the bottle. There has been a price increase and formula change but it still works quite well. Also I read a study years ago about the use if vinegar in a hospital setting. It is an excellent germ killer and has multiple other uses. Vinegar gets my vote.

@@stitcheswellwithvodka3534 You brew the tea in water and use it with a cloth to clean glass, as you would Windex or a vinegar solution. Spray, wipe, done. I have no idea if it’s important that it be BLACK tea.Good luck.

    Really good tips Jane!
I will try definitely the one with softener!
And with general cleaning spray 😊
About vinegar 🤩 how much I love to use vinegar!
Even instead of softeners I use it in my washing machine 😆
Because you can't smell it at all , only the wishing power/liquid 😊 And my clothes are softer then when I didn't use anything. But listen, totally just my thing 😜
Thank you for another great tips!

Getting here later...but was so happy to hear you say just use a dab of olive oil to clean good wooden furniture. I try to buy quality olive oil and was sad recently to find a bit left in a forgotten bottle that had gone off tastewise. But it was wonderful as a wooden furniture cleaner! Just a few drops goes a long way. I even dabbed a bit on my housekey to encourage a sticky lock.

Olive oil has gotten so expensive I cannot afford it. Switched to coconut oil and it works great as a furnitue polish as well.

Great ideas. I use a multi-use eco cleaning liquid, plus bicarb, white vinegar, and a very mild eco washing up liquid. Plus laundry powder, using about half the recommended amount. That seems to cover just about everything!

As all ways a great video!! I use fabric pellets as air freshener. Put a little in a pretty tea cup and they smell great for week. Then when you want to dispose of them put in the wash or down the sink drain to make that smell good.

What's really impressed me lately is the discovery of the wonders worked by heat and bright light. I splurged on a high quality raincoat, which at some point sat damp and developed a mildewy smell. I tried this, and that and the other thing including vinegar. And it was a second bit of carelessness that fixed the problem. Still using the coat for the dog park, I forgot it in my car which had been parked in a sunny spot, for about 2 days. Smell vanished, banished so entirely there isn't the slightest hint left. This is why our 100% cotton sheets used to have such a perfume to them when coming off of the line.

Great Video. No need for all these aggressive special cleaners.
I also refill a spray bottle with all-purpose cleaner, but i use a lot less from "the cheaper bottle". May be there is a difference between countries. In Germany the all-purpose cleaner is very concentrated. The big bottle says to use one and a half caps/lids in 10 liters of water. So in a 750ml spraybottle I put only a good splash ( ~ a sixth of the lid/ 5ml). Cleans very well. And everywhere around possible limestone-build-up I use intead a spraybottle filled with one part vinegar (at 5%) and two parts of water.
Letting sit the solutins on the surfaces before wiping off also makes cleaning easy.

I water down the softener always have and get more for my money.
Like you I used white vinegar for cleaning and have always used cif or jif as I still call it, you can't beat a gentle abrasive cleaner.
I also found bleach tablets recently such a handy thing to have in.

I'm a bit late here, but one of the things my son, math and science teacher, reminded me is that water is the universal solvent. That little reminder has affected me in a very big way. For now, with everything in California, USA so very dry, dust and dirt - i.e. garden soil are the main culprits I must deal with. What I do, is to drench a portion of my floor with very hot water and use my micro-fiber spin mop to gather up the water and spin it into the bucket. I was amazed at how clean my floors got with nothing but hot water. I dust with a damp rag that I wring out in a small bucket (actually a reused ice-cream plastic container) and I use the vacuum cleaner for floors and furniture. As for laundry, I usually wear my clothes at least 3 times unless I have been working in the garden or otherwise get very soiled. The water and bashing comprise most of the cleaning in laundry, so I tend to use half of the lower amount of detergent. Usually this is about 20 ml. I use only cold water and then I use the pre-soak cycle and heavy duty cycle. I only wash full loads - no exceptions and I have a high capacity washing machine. I live with a German Shepherd service dog, and she sheds a lot, so that's my greatest challenge in keeping the house clean.
Thank you for your channel. Your suggestions are excellent.

Great information thank you Jane. Vinegar and water squirt of dish soap does great on floors. If I have a clog in tub or sink. I buy plain bleach instead of pipe cleaner. A lot cheaper. Works better actually.

Just put about a cup of bicarbonate of soda in a bowl. Then mix in a teaspoon of liquid glycerine and enough dishwashing liquid to make a paste. I store mine in an old clean jam jar. Use with a sponge to clean sinks or the bath

White vinegar can be used in place of fabric softener. It doesn't make your cloths stink and actually softens the fibers, while fabric softener just coats the fibers.

I take my fabric softener and I dilute it 50/50 (water) that way I have two bottles of fabric softener. I also go to the dollar tree and buy a very concentrate Lysol bottle that makes five gallons at one time. Then I take my five one gallon downy bottles and fill it with the Lysol. Make sure you have five gallon bucket to make your Lysol.

I make my own citrus cleaner. Steep citrus rinds in white vinegar for 2 weeks. Strain and put in spray bottle. Cuts through grease on the cook top and oven. Also make mould remover from 6 drops of clove oil in 500 ml of warm water. Mould is a constant in the humid wet summers here.

Just watched this on bbc Morning Live
As you may now realise, a more local alternative to soap nuts is actually a very good thing! Conkers (or horse chestnuts), just like soap nuts, contain saponin, and they're great for those with sensitive skin. The laundry liquid will leave your clothes unscented for the most part with a very faint woodland style smell.
Saponin is also in the veins of Ivy and you can wash, cut in to pieces and put in a bag with your washing machine. Apparently when finished it smells of pine.
    Have you ever tried Jane?

Your list of cleaning equipment etc sounds pretty much the same as mine. I have a dishwasher that’s goes on on economy 7 at night and I break every dishwasher tablet in two and use a half for a wash and never use rinse aid. Instead of those expensive dishwasher washing tablets to spring clean your machine I use a cup of vinegar. Great video!

Mixing up a bucket and doing cleaning really saves on the amount of cleaning products I use. I find I use way more when I spray, spray, spray. I do my laundry with minimal amounts of soap, spot treat if needed. I also rinse out my bottles to get all the soap. I also fill the bottles with water, write SOAPY on it and store a few under my laundry sink. Great for washing up multiple things, paint brushes, old jars, etc. There is plenty of soap left in them. I also take a bottle out to the garden where the garden hose is to wash my hands when working in the yard/garden.

I have four cleaning products that I use, good old Jif, washing up liquid, laundry powder and homemade spray and wipe made using white vinegar and orange peels which is cheap as chips to make and one big jar lasts me for a year. For cleaning the floor I add washing up liquid and white vinegar to the bucket and for cleaning the windows, good old fashioned newspaper and water like my Grandparents did. I was all my clothes in cold water ( I don't think a hot wash is a thing in NZ) and hang my washing on the line as I don't own a dryer. Some great tips in your video!

Hey Jane, thanks for another great video, the description of the germs coming out of the toilet made me laugh 😂 I make a general purpose cleaning spray with surgical spirit and water in an old spray bottle which lasts a really long time. I also make homemade air freshener with 1 part surgical spirit, 1 part water and essential oil- We really don't need all the products the manufacturers make out we do and we certainly don't need to use the amount they suggest, you can half it easily, they wouldn't make so much money if we didn't buy these things on a more regular basis though so it's good to be aware and more mindful about what we're using and if we can use less/more natural cleaners it's less plastic being used, less chemicals in our home, less money being spent and more money in our bank accounts.
