    • @chisel4164
      @chisel4164 8 лет назад +27

    • @NJFPV
      @NJFPV 6 лет назад +3

      I know there are some youtube "killer bee" guys that say that smoke is used to simulate the hive burning, but that is not true and those people, especially one, have no idea what they are talking about. Smoke is used to mask the alarm pheromones put out by alarmed bees to keep the hive from going into a panic and turbo boosting into attack mode. Guard bees excrete isopentyl acetate and other bees sense it and go into defense mode. It has nothing to do with the bees thinking that their hive is on fire. Bees have no defense against fire and to not attempt to "save the hive" or gorge on honey. It simply stops them from being able to communicate with each other, which is what promotes aggressive behavior.

    Wow I once had bees get mad at me like that,
    Had to change all the frames on a three brood chamber hive and no queen in it.
    Some places like the one in the video are just really hard to get at.
    I wonder have you ever thought of tying a frame of brood to a stick. Must give it a go myself though. But for sure a few frames of brood in the boxes might have calmed them down a bit hey. What do you think.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  10 лет назад +5

      We have tied brood boxes to ropes and raised the box to a swarm but never a cluster this big. It works pretty well if you have some old dark comb in the box. Never tried with brood though. I think these were just pissed because they had just fallen 25 feet.

    • @workwithnature
      @workwithnature 10 лет назад

      Ha probably yes. I would not be happy either :)
      The brood really makes them stick to a box. That is what I have found on numbers occasions anyways. Must give it a shot with the frame myself when I get a chance.

    • @martindale1042
      @martindale1042 10 лет назад

      I have tied an old brood frame to an extendable pole and put it next to a high swarm. They ran right onto it. I suppose if you put a frame up there with a queen attached in a cage, you could raise them one at a time and load up a couple of pounds onto the frame at once and bring it down to put into a nuc.

    • @628DirtRooster

    This a video on how Not to treat your bees. Walking on them, crushing them, getting them to release alarm pheromone, hell guys, you got them so stirred up they are acting like Africanized bees. I hope they didn't remember this rough treatment and become aggressive hives.

    Hey 628DirtRooster I’m watching your massive mad bees in the pine tree and it came to mind you need a crossbow to shoot over the lim. It works every time well almost every time you got to be a good shot. Man I’d love to get them bees for my yard. Keep up the good work. Enjoy watching your videos.

    The way to get a rope over a high branch is to use string tied to an arrow, then pull the rope over with it :)
    I do not mean a shop bought bow, just a bamboo cane with something sutable as a bowstring willl do the job to fire a short cane over :)
    For a job like that you need a Space Suit. not a Bee Suit !

    Wow!! Massive find. . .and nice that you had so many new queens on hand in the perfect situation. I hope the nucs turn into some decent hives. Can't wait to see the long term results. Again: Great Find!!

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  10 лет назад +3

      They are coming on like Gangbusters. I'll try and remember to get some video of them this week. My brother looked in on them today and said they had a bunch of drawn out comb and whole lot of honey in them.

    • @MDPrepper
      @MDPrepper 10 лет назад

      628DirtRooster Outstanding!! Were you planning on finding lots of swarms? (with all those extra queens on hand)

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  10 лет назад +1

      ***** Between my dad, my brother and myself we usually get two or three swarm calls and maybe one or two hive removal calls a week during spring. Some of our friends rely on us for queens as well. Since most commercial operations requeen every hive every year you can buy one year old laying queens kinda cheap some times.

    • @MDPrepper
      @MDPrepper 10 лет назад

      628DirtRooster What is the going rate for a new queen when re-queening?? Just curious as I'm a bit worried that one of my new queens might be poorly mates (lots of drones laid in the first few weeks). Probably nothing but I'm a bit paranoid at times!

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  10 лет назад +2

      ***** In our area new mated queens go for $18 to $25 depending on who you're dealing with. Virgin queens and one year old queens are half that. Queen cells are $3.00. If you have to order a queen she'll cost you $40 to $50 including shipping. Check with your local beekeeping clubs to find out who's grafting (raising queens). That'll save you a fortune over ordering. Or Google the registry of beekeepers for your state.
