- We have the winners of Vidbir 2024 and these are no others than the fan favourites Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil who will represent Ukraine at Eurovision 2024 and here is my reaction to their live performance of "Teresa and Maria"!

Alyona and Jerry’s song is not aggressively religious, so you are right in your interpretation of their song. Their intention is not to offend anyone or propagate religious worldview. They used their figures as symbols and it is generally better not to dig too deep into senses of this song. Just enjoy the music.
I usually like to dig deep in case there is a case of propaganda and offensive content but I really don't think there is anything of those! And I love the song and music ❤️

OMG! This is the true music! They have only one phrase in english , but with their energy and their voices they managed to bring the main massage to the world! You understood it corectly! We don't need any superpowers to be great people, to help others.

A note on the lyrics: On the internet, З нами Мама Тереза і Діва Марія is translated "With us mama Teresa, Diva Maria". 'Diva Maria' sounds very strange, and for a reason. The Ukrainian Діва means "Virgin" ! So it is not Diva Maria, but simply Virgin Mary (Κόστισ: Παρθένα Μαρία). So it should be "Mother Teresa and Virgin Mary are with us".
Yes I figured that it meant virgin!!! But I guess they wanted it like that to use it later on "all the divas are born as human beings"

I'm from Ukraine and can say that this song isn't about religion but about the strength of spirit and belief in oneself. Regarding the song's lyrics, Jerry Heil sings that just as a spring finds its way through the earth, we, as humans, must remember that despite the rocky and thorny path of our lives, we must fight and pave our way to happiness because it is only in our hands. Mother Teresa and Saint Mary (just because taking gods from movies or legends as examples wouldn't be quite appropriate) in this song serve as symbols of something considered sacred, but even they were ordinary women with their problems, walking on earth as if on a sharp blade, and their lives also were filled with suffering.
The song is about the idea that walking a thorny path is normal not only for humans but also for gods, but we shouldn't give up. Alyona Alyona sings that life is like a noose around the neck for those who don't fight but succumb to the burden of problems. She expresses that life may be frightening and surrounded by darkness, but our ancestors also walked such a path and are now watching over us from heaven.
Of course, there is a parallel in this song to Ukrainian women who suffer during times of war but they should not give up, like Mother Teresa and Saint Mary. That's probably why some people who review this song may cry and have goosebumps, not understanding the lyrics but feeling the pain conveyed by Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil.

Мати Тереза це ще й історична постать. А Діва Марія цілком можливо теж була. Справа не в тому, Мати Тереза вона зробила багато добра,це як прояв милосердя. А Діва Марія є захисницею, до неї моляться,коли просять захисту. Але вони також народилися як звичайні люди. Також мова йде про те,в українському тексті пісні, що Мати Тереза і Діва Марія йдуть босі, наче по лезу, йдуть по землі. Тобто тут йде ще й інша прихована думка. Тобто,проявляючи доброту і милосердя, а також виступаючи захисником когось, ми завжди сильно ризикуємо, часто найдорожчим, і по іншому бути не може в цьому житті , Потім англійською мовою йде текст, що Мати Тереза і Діва Марія родилися,як звичайні жінки. Тобто ці величні постаті це насправді такі ж звичайні люди як і ми. І кожен з нас може проявляти милосердя і бути берегинею для інших людей. Тут дуже глибока суть цих слів.

You have already read the translation in one of the comment replies. But for those who haven't, no, it is not a religious song. In that it is not about religion, neither does it promote religion.
Jerry Heil & Alyona Alyona use Teresa and Virgin Mary as symbols. The song is about womanhood and sisterhood and overcoming hardships. It says that, as a woman, you have a lot on your shoulders. And people will always find reasons to criticize you, your looks, your personality, your choices in life. But no matter how hard your path is, you should keep on pushing through. And you can find strength in the realization that thousands of women before you, your ancestors, faced the same struggles. Even those who are now considered saint and holy, who are revered and worshiped, were once regular women. They faced similar hardships and their share of sorrow. And like them, you should never give up; you can overcome it all and eventually ascend.
At least, this is how I, as an atheist, interpret this song :)

What I really don’t like in this performance is that Dementor figure on the background. But Jerry already said they will make staging brighter and lighter in the future.
Yes the staging needs work. But I trust that Ukraine knows how to stage for Eurovision!!

This song is actually about responsibility for who you are and who you will become. It says that everyone was born as a human being and not a holy entity. So it is not religious, mostly empowering and also speaking about our responsibility for our destiny and growth

Exactly! I am Ukrainian- and the song has nothing to do with proclaiming the saints. " All the divas were born as the human being". Its a message to be delivered.
Kostis I listen to you and love your approach to explain for everyone here the context of songs ❤! Something amazing how many devotion you have! So thx for this and yes you're right, I speak also Ukranian, and the song isn't religious at all.The main idea of a song the feelings that most ukranian ppl have right now during the War. And even if you are not religious person, or kind not traditional sex oriantation any thing are not matter when people have difficult times and war. So when it's happen you naturally remember God or some influential figures in history like Mother Teresa. That's why these girls sing Mother Teresa and Maria with us. cause this is help to ppl to be strong in theirs hopes to handle with terrible times.

Thank you for all you have said, love your video. But there`s one thing I would like to clarify. Ziferblat don`t really like when people compare them to The Beatles, they said it in one interview. The fact is that they are looking up to Sir James Paul McCartney( I hope I`m not mistaken), but they said that The Beatles wasn`t an inspiration for them and they describe their music as something absolutely different, in comparison to Beatles.

I said it at the beginning of this video. Editing a reaction of 11 songs takes a lot of hours. Also I told you that I watched them and I told you my opinions so I can't react to something I've already watched. Also now I have COVID so I can react to nothing!

do not strongly criticize the scene and everything else - it was filmed in a shelter due to the threat of rocket attacks and all the viewers gave written consent not to disclose the location and time of filming. in the conditions of war, I think it was a well-made show

My comment for their staging was in comparison with some of the other performances of other Ukrainian acts that had better staging in the same location.
