Roger Miller's lyrics and rhyming systems, in both his novelty songs and ballads, seem most aptly defined as clever -- at an Einsteinian level. But this often served as a vehicle for the profound.
Roger's honest introspection was unflinching. Note how the humor of "Do-Wacka-Do" sweetens his narrative of malevolent envy. "Hard-Headed Me" could well be titled "I, Dumbass." "One Dyin' and A-Buryin' " invites us to join him at the nadir of human experience.
The wonderfully strange poetic structure of the first verse of "England Swings" took me years to get straight. It is unique as far as I know.
I could go on this way for a couple more hours, but I'll wrap up with a declaration of my deep adoration for this artist and my eternal gratitude for the joy his legacy has brought.

And that's my dad, Oklahoma's own Danny Vaughan, on guitar up there with Mr. Miller and Mr. Stuart! Went on to be one of the original members of the UCO Jazz Lab. Born in Beckham County himself, a ways east of Erick. I was three years old when he played this gig, he talked about how cool it was to get to play with Roger Miller, but I never thought I'd get to see it, and here it's been for 13 years. Thank you.

Hey, Marshall! I worked a lot with your dad and he was a great guitar player. We played Lyric Theatre together and taught next door to each other at Edmond Music. It was indeed a great honor to get to play with Roger Miller. I'm glad you found this video and thanks for commenting! PB

That's not necessarily why he's the best singer of it though, is it ! No, I did not realise he wrote it, and it is an unusual song maybe rightfully called iconic. I still say, this is HIS song ,because, nobody does it, performs it, better than him. As I'm sure you deduce from my original statement.

You're correct, there was not a Summer Olympics in 1986. This was a Summer Olympic Festival held in Norman ,OK. The date was 1989, not 1986. So thanks for bringing that to my attention....I have made the correction.

As a self taught musician and singer, Roger is a great example of what a frontman and singer should be.
His projection and mic control are excellent. He knows what he can and cant do thus hardly singing a sour note ever

I think Roger might have been underrated as a vocalist. This baritone/ tenor had a powerful voice, at least when he chose to use his gift for good instead of evil 😉. "Engine Engine No. 9" showcases his range very well. His delivery of the song's second verse is mesmerizing.
