- This video is one of a series featuring the art work of Xuefei's fans - they responded to her call for some pictures relating to their impressions of China. All of the videos in the series are associated with music from Xuefei's latest double CD - Sketches of China.
Yao Dance, arranged and performed by Xuefei Yang, is a well-known & popular Chinese instrumental composition from the second half of the 20th century, most often performed as an orchestral work.
It was composed by Tieshan Liu in 1952 and shortly after orchestrated by Yuan Mao. As a young man, composer Tieshan Liu toured southern China to collect local folk music. He was inspired to compose this piece having encountered the Yao people (another of the 56 ethnic groups in China) performing a long-drum dance at their traditional festival.
Xuefei has recorded this piece, along with many other works reflecting the breadth and depth of Chinese music, on her album Sketches of China.
