Yuna's dance (the sending), is one of the most powerful scenes I've seen in a video game.
I was blown away 20 years ago, and today still, it's an unbelievably well made scene.
Thanks again for sharing this playthrough, and ignite those memories 🙏🏻

I think, in all of FF, that the Kilika Sending is the most beautiful scene in an artistic sense. Every single shot is composed really nicely, the music & sound design is gorgeous, the colors and lighting are fabulous…. The only bit that’s really showing its age is the hair physics as Yuna swings around.

They tried to make Aerith do a similar dance in Rebirth but it still paled in comparison to the real thing.
It's the one scene they better not screw up in FFX remake. 😁

Yuna standing up to Dona was when I fell in love with her. The writing is so well done. She makes her strong personal point and doesn't belittle. And then after Dona leaves, thst little detail of Yuna shaking it off. She's fighting on so many fronts even though she's so scared. Her strength and courage shine through with a kind gentleness.

People use the laughing scene as a way to discredit the voice acting which is ridiculous as the scene is "bad" on purpose and even worse in the Japanese version. But I agree, despite a few rough patches here and there, the voice acting is really good overall, especially for the time it came out

It's pretty bad at places. Wakka is the only one I feel that is consistently quite good. I don't think Tidus's VA is bad per say, but I don't like how he does it. It's mostly due to bad direction, I think. Yuna is the worst of the main characters. I don't know if its the VA or the direction, but she's so flat at times it gets annoying.

I LOVE your take on Tidys being relatable and able to reflect on his thoughts and emotions. That’s definitely what they were going for when writing him, and it’s such a fresh take for a protagonist of any story to be able to work through those things and cycle through different perspectives.
It’s really smart writing and it’s so cool to see someone acknowledge that. I love this entire cast of characters, truly, and that’s hard to accomplish from a writers standpoint.

I don't know if you figured this out yet, but you don't need to constantly equip you weapons and armor in battle. That's what the Equip menu is for. Doing so in battle is more so you can quickly switch to something more appropriate for the enemy you're fighting.
In other games in the series, Assess/Sensor is also called Scan and Libra.
Waterstrike is not for attacking underwater. The abilities Waterstrike, Firestrike, Icestrike, and Lightningstrike, add those particular elements to the attacks of the weapons they're attached to.
Aside from Lock spheres in the early game, don't be stingy with your spheres. Make use of the Sphere Grid often to boost your party. Certain fiends are more likely to drop certain types of spheres so if you're running low on one type just farm them from a different enemy. Don't be afraid to take your time and grind a bit if you feel the need, especially since spheres are placed pretty generously throughout the game.
Glad to see you experiencing this (and the PS2) for the first time and I'm impressed by your insight on the story and characters. While the sequel is less popular and vastly different tonally, I absolutely adore it, seeing it as a perfect complement to this game's story. I really hope to see you play it eventually, too!

Please activate all spheres as you pass them by! Wakka may not get much use out of "magic up" in his specialization, but some abilities may depend on that stat. Or you can eventually have him go through the magic area of the sphere grid and these will be invaluable. So please don't skip on any of them, because going back to get them later is much more costly!

23 years old! Development cost $32,000,000. Team was 100 people and took them 2 years starting in 1999. Eventually would go on to sell over 22,000,000 copies which is the highest-grossing ever for a FF game.

That one scene with Yuna where she verbally combats Dona is just one shining example of why I love Yuna's character. Her speech shows strength and kindness both. Yuna has zero hate in her heart even those who attacks her friends but she always has a strong sense of always doing the right thing. So all she had to do was to speak the truth to completely shut down Dona. And she shows that she doesn't need to be disrespectful in order to destroy someone verbally. There are many moments like this in this game where Yuna just shines. So if you are about to see Yuna give a speech, you know that its going to be a good one.
And I think Auron's name is pronounced Ore-en. At least I think that's how Tidus pronounces ore - en.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet or not, but the "Extract" abilities just force the enemy to drop the associated sphere for your sphere grid. So "Extract Ability" makes them drop Ability Spheres, "Extract Power" drops Power Spheres, etc. This is useful later, because it actually changes whatever the enemy was going to drop into those spheres. There are some enemies in the late game that drop something like 50 potions or whatever, so using the extract ability turns those 50 potions into 50 spheres for your grid.

(also, try to exhaust people's dialogues until they repeat themselves, you've been missing some cool scenes by not doing it. On the boat, when Wakka and Lulu were talking, if you continued to go on the upper deck to talk to them, there was other scenes to watch)

You said at the beginning of your playthrough that you wanted to do as much of the game as possible (side quests/content, minigames, etc.) so just be aware with the Final Fantasy's of this generation and earlier that there is a lot of missable content as you progress that they don't hold your hand and point you towards. Make sure you talk to people more than once and try to interact with objects in the world a bit more (you've missed quite a few Al Bhed primers that I assume you think are just part of the background but they're books on the floor or on a table). I'm just giving you a heads-up on this kind of stuff because you specifically said you cared about it. :3

@@kikiyatman Actually, in the version she is playing, unless she dedicates around 30+ hours of grinding and farming, she basically has already missed the destruction sphere in Besaid as well as the Energy Blast and also will miss an overdrive for a character she still doesn't have. She also has already missed the Jecht Shot for something that is comming. She still can get it latter I think, but only if she put like 30+ hours of minigaming. From previous strems, she doesn't really do everything, but do most of it.

@@winshifter out of all you said only the Destruction Sphere is actually missed, everything else can be found by simply walking back. This is possible the moment the party takes an intentional detour (damn it's difficult talking about these without spoiling anything). And even with the Destruction Sphere there's the possibility of Zanmato if grinding doesn't sound enjoyable. And having just finished the Sphere Grid for everyone yesterday, I'd definitely understand not wanting to do it

    • @winshifter
      @winshifter 3 месяца назад

@@kikiyatman I mean, maybe I might have implied something else, but, it is really not missable anything of it, but given that the event that would prevent it is right at the gate of Besaid, it would be difficult. Assuming she gets Zanmatto, on a regular, not rng manipulation gameplay, odds are just half of winning the lottery. There are ways to make Zanmatto happen more often, but requires that you pay a lot early on and that requires grinding. I don't remember, but unless she goes back to Besaid after all of Luca events, for all intents and purposes, Energy Ray and Destruction Sphere are already missed items.

Perfect example to why I love that Maggie is playing this game❤ she analyzes everything, of course, from her own POV, but it provokes thoughts for us that may feel like we understand things to a T
For example, the way she talked about the way the characters are talking to each other bringing up ideas and making assumptions ❤❤❤ I think it's easy to overlook how that kind of thing makes the writing of a game so much more memorable, not to mention internal dialogue! That's something I feel like is missing from a lot of English translations these days😤 but that's a subject for later

Little background on the odd button mapping: When the figured on the Playstation button was designed, the intention was for Triangle to be the map(the triangle pointing north), Square to be for menus(shaped like a page), Circle for yes, and X for no. In the West there was a hard gravitation towards X being yes and Circle being no, for some reason, and for years games would have two different button mappings X and Circle depending on which region it was made for.

    • @Tetrastratic

I read or saw a video about that O/X decision, if I remember correctly during US development/translation/whatever, they were focusing more on the button colors rather than the shape on them. So from JPN logic it was O = yes, X = no, while US it was red = no, blue = yes

This reminds me of a documentary i watched about England coming from behind to beat our Australian team in The Ashes, a regular cricket series between Australia and England.
I'll admit I'm not too aware of what was going on at the time, but someone in the documentary said that this occurred in a year when there was a lot of friction going on, such as riots and such. And they said that winning that series brought a sense of hope for them, maybe even unity and calm (which is a term you'll find comes up in FFX).
Knowing the talent our team had, and the player-selection chaos that occurred for England at the start of the series, this was quite an inspirational awe-inspiring victory too. I mean as an Australian cricket fan, I have a passionate hate for the England cricket team (like their fans have for us (see Lords 2023)) yet i was cheering for them as I watched that documentary. Wakka's point and your point about bringing hope and a time to forget troubles really resonated with me!

My advice for the sphere grid is to look for the nodes of the type of abilities they are already using: black magic nodes for Lulu, White Magic nodes for Yuna, Status Ailment Attacks for Wakka, Support skills like Slow and Haste for Tidus and so on. The paths are kinda straightforward.

You are still in the silly habit of switching weapons and armor in battle. You dont need to do that. It doesnt affect the list of turns. It only grants you another turn if you need to switch a weapon or amor, but the number of turns you get to attack remains the same. So it is really pointless to do it unless your intention is to use a different weapon or armor.

Maggie, you’re doing great for your first play through and figuring out the battle system! quick pointers if you want to use them. you don’t have to do the armor when you’re in the battle. If you equipped it in the menu system, you’re good to go. That’s just if you find an armor isn’t working or you need a resistance to something you can switch it mid battle. and also you can use the extract sphere abilities in battle to steal ability spheres or mana spheres etc and then you can use them in your sphere grid. Have fun!! ❤

    @sutekidane94 3 месяца назад +6

Avoid using the extract skills. The “Extract power/abilty/speed” skills are used to overwrite the items you get from a fight with power/ability/agility spheres for the sphere grid. That means if you use this during boss fights, you’re losing out on the normal drops you would get from a boss and just getting spheres for the sphere grid. Those skills only exist if you are low on spheres and need to farm them from fights. Try to avoid using them in boss fights because you lose out on good loot. It would be a good idea to look through what skills and abilities do in the menus. It also tells you what they do at the top of the screen while you hover over it during battles.
As far as the sphere grid goes, there’s no reason not to move if you have SP points to spend. There’s also no reason to not use spheres to unlock nodes you come across unless they are “key spheres” which are limited near the beginning of the game. Since you chose “Expert Sphere Grid” which allows for more freedom in leveling, the set character paths are a little more unclear.
As far as weapons and armor go in combat, you’ve just been selecting shat they already have equipped. That option in combat is more for switching when your weapon or armor is ineffective against what you’re fighting.
You can see what skills and abilities do by hovering over them.
Unlike other characters, Tidus learns new Overdrives after using it a certain amount of times, so use it often to unlock more.

One tip I'd give is to make sure to keep talking to your main characters until their lines run out. It gives you extra lore and characterization. In FFX the main characters usually have 2 lines of dialogue up to 3 sometimes.
Also, I've noticed at the end you avoided talking to Yuna 2:24:54 and accidentally triggered a cutscene.
In general, it's best to talk to your party members first before moving around in case you trigger a cutscene.
17:28 Haha, didn't you restart the sphere grid tutorial in the first video too? Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...
45:07 Hearing random encounters being described as mini games is a first one for me. Fascinating.
51:17 You always start the battle with the last 3 you fought with. If you want a different set-up switch a character.
58:40 A tip but in the settings you can adjust it so that it shortens the Aeons' summon animations (excl. the first time).
1:03:38 That is the fun part about turn-based combat, in FFX especially. Figuring out what is the most optimal strategy.
1:05:35 While a tough cookie, Ochu wasn't as tough as I remembered. Keep in mind it's game over if you die, no auto-saves. So you would have to re-do all your grinding / leveling up when you do die.
1:56:28 Luna is a different FF character!
2:13:03 The way you keep calling the Sphere Grid circles webs is funny.
2:15:35 A tip but you can use L1/R1(?) when you're in the Equip menu and other character menus to switch character.

    Some tips:
    1. No need to use potions/hi-potions to heal up if u wanna save them as long as Yuna is in your party with enough MP to use Cure to heal party members instead.
    2. There's no reason to save S. levels unless you don't have the right sphere to activate a node. There are other reasons but they don't apply for where you are in the game yet.
    3. If you don't use at least one action by someone in battle, they don't gain S. levels so u may want to get in the habit of using everyone at least once in battle.
    4. When using Valefor in battle, keep using Sonic Wings to delay the enemy attack if they're not immune to it. You'll thank me later.
    5. For your question at 1:29:10 - you'll eventually be able to insert abilities into empty slots.

A bit of deep iceberg lore, Blue Magic: The characters in the FFX follow interpretations of classes or 'jobs' in older FFs you've probably already figured out. Tidus is Warrior, Yuna is White Mage and Lulu is a Black Mage, Wakka is an "Archer" or ranger of sorts, etc. But Final Fantasy also has a unique 'job' that's shown up in some titles, and that's a "Blue Mage". Blue mages learn the magic of their enemies as their core skill that often take on monstrous traits like Fire breathing like a dragon instead of just casting Fire. You probably got a taste of this with the Enemy Skill Materia in FF7R, but 7 doesn't really have as much of the FF "job system" that other games did. Kimahri is in this game a Blue Mage as you can now tell from his Overdrive. Two fun facts here are that it's a bit of a inside joke that Kimahri has blue fur to match his job lol haha, and also his starting space on the Sphere Grid represents him being able to learn from his friends just as much from the Fiends of Spira. His broken horn has another fun story about it's history with Summoners but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. "And that, as they say, is that" 😉
