Theres a valid argument to be made for nearly every lineup and as much as i love Gar , Dirk might be the most skilled and versatile of all the drummers so far and between Marty , Kiko, and Chris , I'll take all three. Dave E. Should be and always will be the bassist of Megadeth , he's far more to their sound than just another bass player.

This is a good video. I think Mustaine hasn't been speaking enough about his past with Metallica, for the last 40 years. I'm glad we now have someone ELSE from Megadeth, who was never a part of it, that is also talking about those days, too.

You might say Megadeth has always just been the Dave Mustaine solo band, but Ellefson was the yang to Mustaine’s yin. Now Megadeth is like Danzig: not a band, just one guy with a revolving door of guys who can only handle the singer for a few records.

Jeff Young is such an under rated musician(MIT 85). I was fortunate enough to see them(MD) open for Alice Cooper w/Jeff Young on lead. They were great! From them to Alice, my dad was having 73' flashbacks with AC. I really want to see these guys.

In the early days when bands were getting going it was ALL about the fans and Music. Once you get the taste of metal in your mouth it is senseless to try stopping it. Just accept that they need us, and in many ways we have relied on them at whatever times. *Like in the Gym. To me Slayer hits when I am in a great mood and want to write kick ass poetry.

The whole argument about Metallica being "really not that fast" misses the point and overlooks what Metallica was about in the 1980s, but maybe their manager didn't get the memo at the time. Their metal was just perfectly balanced. The acoustic intros. The instrumental sections. The guitar harmonies. The transitions. The thematic content that went beyond the usual (e.g., the occult, the government, serial killers). It's why I prefer The Four Horsemen over The Mechanix. I also heard once that Ulrich tried to get the guys to understand that Sad But True had to have a slower tempo to get that heaviness; he was right, love him or hate him. It's why songs like The Thing that Should Not Be work. Their music has a timeless, cinematic quality that can be interpreted in various forms. I love Megadeth and Slayer, too, by the way. No hate here! And Anthrax beats any of the Big Four live.
Some times the slower speed is the property tempo. Four Horseman has a groove that the Mechanix doesnt

For me, I've always argued that Kill em all was a fast hard rock album; much like the first two Iron Maiden albums are just killer, hard rock. Everything about Kill Em All was written in a 70's rock fashion, just a bit heavier and faster. Such an absolutely amazing basically 70's hard rock album!

The guitars were like taking the best of Maiden & Preist & cutting out the other stuff & just so in your face. Theres a fine line between Hard rock & Heavy metal back in the day. I loved both. If Iron Maiden were a heavy Metal band then Metallica absolutley was. Its just labels. The first 3 Metallica albums were just incredible imo.

AJFA, MOP, RTL, DM, KEA... But still it was a great album for it's time, truly groundbraking.
Both once-incredible bands that delivered to us some excellent recordings. I don't see why people need to pick one over the other, enjoy both, it's one of the few rare times in life you get to do that with anything lmao.

Its funny because i write and record my own thrash metal and everything said in this interview is correct. You cant have a 4 minute thrash song with nothing but fast and technical, because then you lose out on slower riffs making the song more interesting and structured. Sometimes a riff played slower is WAY heavier.

You know what i noticed too. All of the members of Megadeth actually praise Metallica. Even Nick did a Creeping Death drum cover! Heh I wonder if that's why Dave keeps kicking them out his band lol... but ironically Dave is obsessed with them too so who knows anymore.
Ellefson said in an interview once that he and Marty Friedman wanted to go see Metallica in concert, but they were worried about Mustaine's reaction. Marty Friedman also covers Metallica songs on concert.

I dealt with Kevin, I think it was, when I booked...he was awesome. The shows were benefit shows called, Food4Music Events, which featured local metal & rocks acts in December from 2005-2008 benefiting Flint's local food bank. We received promo from the local rock station, Banana 101.5. It was such an amazing experience each year, working with the bands, the venue and helping those in need. 🤘✌️

I don't know, he starting to complain about Megadeth as much as Mustain co.plains about Metallica. It's ridiculous. Still one of my favorite bass players.
Except live they always played everything at 1.5x
Its a true observation even in terms of guitar playing, because Metallica strumming is fast, but as Dave says, "the left hand" is much simpler and slower, while the technicality is higher and faster in Megadeth on the fretboard, its also faster on strumming and galloping, but again, like they say in this video, fast and slow isnt what makes a song better, but the tempo it needs to sound perfect.

Well, very often it simply is, if your song is a bit too boring ...make it faster and see how that sounds!
Why can't people enjoy both styles? It's a mood thing. Sometimes I want really fast and aggressive so I listen to a lot of Grindcore or Hardcore/crust punk. I also like Death metal and Black metal. If I want slow and heavy I listen to Doom metal. If I just want to chill I listen to some traditional heavy metal. Probably my 2 favorite bands are Napalm Death and Iron Maiden. What I like is how people still think that thrash metal is fast. It's really not compared to other genres. Thrash is rather mid paced. The thing is there are other genres of music that are just as fast as metal eg. Classical, Hall of the Mountain King gets just as fast as any thrash song. Even a lot of violin and fiddle music is just as fast, it just doesn't have the distortion.

Listen to James playing before he met Dave. He was a glamy rock guy wearing makeup, spandex etc. James didn't know any NWOBHM before Lars & Dave. Lars was all about Diamond Head. Great band, but it was Dave that was tied in more with the heavier music & he taught James & changed James & the band. was the star of the band long before Cliff joined.
So many riffs written that were used in many Metallica albums that Dave forgot & never got/took credit on. & much of Justice was written before Cliff died. He had a hand in much of that album & some used later. Yet Lars diverted credits yet again. & No one would argue with Lars since he went behind alls back early on & became soul owner of the name.
Dave was the reason they got the record deal & invitation to move to NJ. & open for Daves favourite bands. Cliff was not on the recordings yet. Lars is the one who calculated all dirty moves to remove Dave. The only one who ever truly stood up to him. Dave was a threat! Lars is a jealous, coked out control freak! Has credit on every single song. Most he didn't have real hands on. Always finds ways to change lil bits so he can take credit.
All true! Much kept hush hush to avoid issues &/or to stay on the better side in hopes of any good they could do for them. Yet some truths are coming out more & soon i hope all know what Lars is teuly all about & why James is so damaged. Just know there is so much behind the band y'all truly dont know. So don't speak out on what ya's truly don't know much...
Still Dave mustaine is an asshole, drunk and a junkie with attitude problem back then, that's the reason why he was kicked out

so far so good (1988 original - not to be confused with the re-mix that sucks) is one of the best Megadeth records. Thanks to Jeff Young - its too bad Mustaine framed him for his own dope issue, woulda been cool if this lineup lasted more than one record.
the re-mix sounds so much better, I understand if you don't like that "it looses the old school sound", but you should understand that it's actually and improvement in quality.

It's my favourite Megadeth album. So much variety in there. And Young's solos are very creative. Chris Poland was great, but most of his solos are forgettable jazz-improvisation like. It's cool as it is, don't get me wrong. And Marty Friedman on Rust in Peace, man, it's fine, I guess, but it's like "I LOVE ASIAN MUSIC" all over the album. Jeff Young was actually the only Megadeth guitar player from the 80's and 90's (apart from Mustaine, DUH), that sounded like a HEAVY METAL guitar player. Love me some jazz, I even like some asian and fluffly duffy stuff like Friedman plays, but still... yeah, I prefer HEAVY METAL guitar solos.
I think if Mustaine wouldn't have been fired he would have quit in a couple years anyway. Everybody cites the alcoholism, and that was a part of it, but I think if Mustaine would have stayed in Metallica for a couple albums and tours he would have quit anyway. I cant see that lineup lasting too long even if alcohol was out of the equation.

At least him having a burning desire to surpass them hold him on some...track. More or less.

to me Metallica's heaviness culminated with the Justice album . went downhill after that when Kirk started relying on his wah for every lead . Dave has consistently put out heavy music since starting Megadeth and the newest album stays true to that .

I think you might be remembering the “good” Megadeth albums. Plenty of junk there just like Metallica.

@@mattjns nailed it - its the damm karenmetalheads that get triggered. I go to watch a Megadeth video and I see Metallica and now even D.E. is mentioned. No one just talks about the great music both bands have. Yes Metallica went in a lot of directions and I think it is awesome. Megadeth even tried to follow them and they made great easier going metal. The difference in the bands IMO is the front man. Papa Hett is the clear front man and it is not even close.
Love both bands always will even the "bad ones".
Metallicas best destroys Megadeth, but Dave stayed true to metal longer.
