    I like wide angle prime. The wider the focal length, the deep the dof. so to have f1.4 for 24mm, 35mm can really see the difference. but for longer focal length even with 85mm, the dof is very shallow with f2.8. Over 100mm on full frame can give you really shallow dof even at f2.8 and f4. So to me for longer lens you do not really need f1.8. It can be too shallow the background. so my suggestion is get a prime for focal length like 24mm, 35mm 50mm. and then buy a 70-200 f2.8 to cover the rest focal length. That works well for my need.

      very good point not a lot of reviewers mention! Furthermore, DOF is more noticeable on photo vs video depending on your style, because of the movement. Then again wider lenses let in more light.
      @Henbu: I wonder how you stick to the #frames/shutterspeed rule in that regard!?

    • @HorusTheFalconX

      I agree with you. A 70-180/200 f2.8 is plenty enough for shallow dof. On the wide end (16-28) I often need f8 so dont really need lower aperture. But on the 35-50mm range for portrait I always feel f2.8 is not enough. To verify this, I got the sigma 35 1.4, that I will use with my tamron 70-180 2.8. Hope it will be a nice combo for portrait :)

    • @nightdonutstudio
      @nightdonutstudio 3 года назад +1

      @@HorusTheFalconX Right. When I use 24-70 f2.8 for portrait I often find not enough shallow dof when at 35mm 50mm is ok. But when I use 70-200mm f2.8 I find over 100mm the dof is very shallow, many times to a degree that I can not recognize the background.

    Great video. I love my primes, but the large aperture of the more expensive ones could also be a downside in my experience. When blurring half a person's face this is generally not a desirable effect. Even if my 24mm GM can go to f1.4 I often don't like to open it up more than f2.0.

  • @jordansarkisian
    @jordansarkisian 3 года назад +2

    If I have all the time in the world a 24mm would probably never leave my camera body, with maybe a 50mm or 75/85mm to round it out for some reach every now and then. Zoom for me is just if I don't have time, like in an event situation, that's when zooms really shine imo.
    If there was a 24-75mm 1.4 zoom that wasn't a tank tho...then I'd probably just use that. Maybe some day...

    Great breakdown of Primes vs Zooms, this conversation has been on going for years. And I’ve been on both sides of issues at times. At this point in my life I use a 50/50 split of what kind of lenses I’m going to use. But I use more zooms now than I used to. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.

    Primes are better than zooms except when the reverse is true.
    For my APS-C digital cameras, I use the following prime lenses:
    16mm f/1.4
    23mm f/1.4
    23mm f/2
    56mm f/1.2
    135mm f/2

    What is the definition of F number? Focal length divided by diameter of aperture. Therefore, if you wanted an 800mm f1.4 lens, the diameter of the maximum aperture would have to be the best part of two feet! Probably you would need a crane to pick it up.

    such a great video and great facts comparing zoom vs. prime, thoughout the video i was wondering about the canon 28-70/2 and bam right at the end you've mentioned it. The size and price is pretty deadly, but do you think the f2 would give you the cinematic effet. i know i know it's the photographer not the gear, but i'm a gear junkie. I wonder if the f2 zoom lens is too big for carrying around street style or photojournalstic style of shooting

    for wide angle perspectives it really pays to use primes to get cinematic, dreamy bokeh. there's inherently depth of field at 20mm/24mm to the extent that f4 would be disappointing. f/1.4 is gorgeous at 24mm, especially in a city at night

    Better? Let's measure "better" by priority: Better for convenience? No. Better for overall cost, when a zoom lens can cover several focal lengths? No. Better for image quality? Generally yes, for a very well designed single focal length lens. Better if you need a fast aperture? Yes. Better if you're an "artist"? Possibly. Better if you're a photojournalist? Most often, no.
