In a Roger Deakins podcast, he once said something like "I like using primes because it forces you to make a conscious decision about what focal length you're gonna use"
Yeah, that’s a profound thought right there. I do feel like I think a lot more when I shoot with primes.
but if you had the discipline youd use the zoom with same intentions and rather than one focal length you'll have several. "Today ill use the 25, tomorrow ill practice with the 35" and so on and so forth
Dope video, I think I’m going back to a prime set lol. Swag fit as well!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 thanks man.
By the way! We need to do a video together or a live-stream. I love your work man. It stands out against a lot of other RUclipsrs 💯
Mark Bone Hell yeah let’s do it, you’re one of my favorite on the platform
You guys are underrated.
My guys 💯
I think Mark is the number one filmmaker on youtube. The way he makes his video's, his style of shooting, knowledge, enthousiasme and openness really resonates with me! Keep going Mark!
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Zooms are fine if they are very fast. But those cheap lenses with 4.5 or even 5.6 F-Stop are not usable in many situations.
7:36 ...but with the *prime* lenses...
But, yes, that's one of the main differences.
Although I think that in situations of improvisation, with prime lenses you can defend the position for being close to the subject while with zoom lenses there is a risk of blocking the subject by someone standing in front of the camera. I've missed important moments like that.
Of course, with zoom lenses you still have the opportunity to shorten the focal length. But often with the possibility of zooming, we become lazier.
Nuno M Pedro 7:36 was all zoom lenses.
@@markbone you incorrectly said "with a zoom lens" when you actually meant "with a prime lens". I believe that's what the timecode was referring to.
With photography I never liked using zooms because I always felt like it led to me framing shots the exact same way. I would use primes so that I’d have to get creative, move around a bit instead of just zooming the lens to the point that I had a decent frame from my position. From this video it seems the depth of field is the main consideration for you when considering primes vs zooms. What about these super fast zooms? There’s a Lumix 10-25mm 1.8 for m43 (bmpcc4k) that would probably be amazing, ticking your dof box as well as convenience.
Love the Sigma 24mm EF. Equally sharp as the Canon 24-70mm and actually SHARPER than the Canon 16-35mm f/4, in my tests.
yeah definitely sharper in my experience!
I currently don’t have a zoom. I have sigma 16 1.4 and Sony 50 1.8. I shoot on the a6400. I shoot a lot of sports snd once I go back to work and save a bit (currently laid off due to corona) I plan to get a zoom. I’ve enjoyed prime shooting so much though. It has forced me to be more strategic in shooting.

whoah, i got the most amount of info about lens' here than on any other hipsters channel. thanks man, appreciate the info.
This hipster thanks you
This is my 3rd time coming to this video because there’s just so much value here! Thank you, this is a great video
Thanks Mark! The place where I work just closed indefinitely and now I have no excuse to invest time in my videos. Thanks for all the hard work you put into making this videos. Take care!
Ivan Maceda keep at it 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 this is a time to grow not shrink back!
@@markbone thanks man. I really appreciate it
Those 24 prime scenes are shot on full-frame or super 35? They look like 35 on full-frame to me.
Great video! Recently got my Sigma 24mm to add along side my Sony 50mm! Perfect🙏🏾
Yes!! Great lenses
Definitely a wild ride lately. Thanks for still making videos! We primarily do weddings, and that's shut down for a bit. Perhaps I'll work on a project that my wife has been wanting to do for a while.
Oh Man. Sorry brother, wedding industry has been hit hard
Great video Mark! I found it interesting that despite your love for the 24, you would go with the 35 if you had to choose just 1 lens. I'd love to hear you elaborate more on why you feel the 35 is so versatile
24mm is fine if you have a 50mm for those few moments you want to go in tight but a 35mm i would say can be little more versatile cause it gets you in closer
I've finally taken matters into my own hands and will be filming my own projects from now, I'm poor after getting a new camera and will only be able to get one lens within the next couple months. You've shown me the way.
Another great set of lenses for APSC or MFT cameras is the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 and 50-100mm 1.8.
I hundred percent agree you need a 24mm and I would say around 85mm everything else for the most part is just kind of not much different for the most part but there are sooooo many lenses its hard not to get some and try some, then you get a zoom or two to cover many focal lengths for unknown scenarios.. that is my conclusion but idk im a newbie lol
I've watched this video at least 3 times cause I'm super on the fence. For a Z Cam E2C (M4/3) with a speed booster, 18-35 sounds like a good all-around + low light (f/1.2-1.3 is possible I think) but I currently use a Contax c/y 28mm f/2/8 and a Pentax K 50mm f/2, both converted to EF. Also, "Rescate" was a dope film. I absolutely loved it!
I always find shooting on M4/3 less than desirable. Really feels like everything is moving FF these days
Like your style so much that I watch all your videos even if it's a topic I'm not interested about:)
haha, thanks mate!
@Mark Bone A question regarding Fstops: On full frame cameras, making the aperture as open as possible gives you that razor thin plane of focus especially for a lens that goes to F1.4. That being said, do you rack focus like crazy on your shoots? Do you use the Sony wizard magic auto focus? or maybe a bit of both? (Good luck to Panasonic users on that BTW).
You can’t beat the speed and versatility of zoom lenses, but man I just can’t get accustom to using them really. I get stuck on figuring out what focal length I should shoot on. Rather than focus on the shoot. Primes just free my mind up and give me a look I really love. My go to primes sigma 20mm, 35mm, Canon 50mm, pretty soon I will add a medium teIephoto. I may invest in a 24-70mm just hearing your advice.
Favourite zoom lens is definitely my 10-25mm f1.7 m43 lens,, it’s the perfect focal length, hope one day there will be a 20-50mm lens for LF
Side note, haven’t got a single job since mid jan in HK, anxious is crawling up on me lol
Harold Lau oh man, I’m sorry about what’s going on for you in HK. I hope you’re keeping sane, this all has to bounce back!
Your work is really impressive, I love the video where you talk about shooting b roll without using too much slow motion.
🙏🏻 thanks mate
Do you think having a 24mm and 35mm covers you for a shooting intimate character docs? Not sure if I should sell my 35mm for a 50mm or just hold on and save for a 50mm later done the line...
Primes have my heart
So I love them sigmas but interestingly, I use the 35mm for about 80% of my work. Step back for a 24, step forward for a 50. Not always true and I'm about to buy the 24, but interesting how we all see a bit differently.
When I started treating my zoom lens as a collection of prime lenses rather than having something that allows you to 'zoom in', I rediscovered my love for them. Or at least some, for some reason the 24-70 never did it for me, but I shoot 95% of all my work on a 16-35 f2.8 GM nowadays. I'm curious to find out how it stacks up against that 16-35 T3.1 Cine Lens from Sony, any plans on giving that guy a try?
AronBagel I love the 16-35 GM. It’s what I shot my talking stuff in this video on
3:12 Tutorial Start. Thanks Mark!
It’s been pretty crazy here in China, getting back on track now

Im starting to be drawn to what you teach about film making and other stuff. Thanks so much for sharing.
Loving all these videos Mark!
Thanks homie. Hope you’re keeping safe
@@markbone All is well here, just staying positive and using this time well!
Mark: noticed you and Dunna and Peter McKinnon all look like brothers. Interesting! Thx for another super helpful & cool vid for this kid. 💛😎
Maybe we are 😬
This is why i look forward to your videos mark! Love the case study approach
Hanz Florentino thank you! Glad you liked it
@@markbone yes, as a documentary filmmaker myself, your content is a gem
great tutotrials thanks man。I only have sigma 18-35 on bmpcc4k
Same bro went to it blindly as it seemed such a go to lense, now i regret going for it and not the 24-70. Gonna sell a few old lenses i never use to buy it.
Would love too see a video on your use of pro mist filters !
Soon. Waiting for some new ones to come out
Mark Bone I didn’t even know they were new ones haha
I would love to shoot only on primes, but the IS in the RF lenses is just too amazing to spare it if you shoot handheld.
Great video, wish I had seen this before i bought like 5 prime lenses! I always thought good zoom lenses were more expensive
Yeah, good points, here. I also shot an entire film on the 24-70 lens. I love that lens, but prime is prime!
Look forward to your FX9 review. Considering this camera. Also a comparison to the C500
Yeah can't wait to review!
Videos are always one of the best
🙏🏻
You make me considering more to get prime lenses
Mark the FX9 is so amazing. I know you already found out about the fx9 by buying it, but I just wanted to say that. We use an fs7 for college athletics video as our “big” camera and I love it so much compared to our c300ii. I am hoping to get an fx9 one day for my personal work. We use the Rokinon primes a lot, they are cheap but look really really nice. Eventually I’d love to rent some sigma cine zooms... for sports we need to make quick adjustments so we often use a 70-200 for football or a 24-70 for basketball. Zooms are essential for some sports but you can make a prime work!
Yes I agree, the Fs7 was superior to the C300ii in many ways. I think Canon has made some incredible progress with the C500ii. It'll be interesting to see how this battle plays out between the cameras. I think Sony needs to fix some things asap. btw Are you looking to buy another Fs7? I have a package I'm selling with lots of goodies ;)
@@markbone I don't make the purchase calls at my school... but if the price is right I may be interested in an FS7 for personal work. That being said, I may know some other people who would be interested too. I have been looking at the FS5 used a lot on Ebay but the prices still seem pretty inflated for that camera, a lot of them are selling for similar prices to the FS7 used.
Trey Keys let me know :) comes with the original box
Thanks for the effort and sharing. You mentioned fav focal lengths for FF. Would your thinking be different using a crop sensor? Again, thanks. I am an appreciative subscriber. Thumbs up.
Great video! Love how you break down the pros and cons of each. Binging your channel while in isolation 😂
Haha. Thanks mate
If one is working with an APS-C sensor with a speed booster, do the same considerations apply?
yes, but you just need wider lenses if you're gonna match what I was doing on the full frame
Nice video. I'd say if i'm run and gun i'd take a 24-70mm no hesitation (currently using a 18-35 + a prime 50mm for a run and gun docu it's a pain). If i have more time I'd add to it a 24mm prime and a 50mm prime. If i have time and money i'd rent a set of anamorphic cine primes. But it's more or less what you've said ;)
Absolutely loved this video
You watched it fast lol
I too, am on team bokay 👍🏼
rr narratives oooookay bokay
Your work is exceptional! Love it!
How do you like this lens?
Bokay, I guess.
...kidding. love your videos.
Bahaha. I approve
Hello Mark, I saw this video and the one of the top 5 gear and make me wonder, when you get your first camera which comes with kit lenses, what you upgrade or buy next? better lenses or good lights? what's first? what's more important?
Buy a good lens. Learn natural lighting and then buy one big light and learn how to work that
@@markbone I was incline to the same conclusion but not sure 100%. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, it says a lot about you, you are AWESOME!, I really appreciate it.
As always, great stuff, Mark! 👍🏼👍🏼
Hey Mark. Thank you for this video man. I have 3 primes and 1 zoom. I have the original bmpcc with a Nikon f mount metabones speedbooster. Would you advice getting c mount cctv zoom lenses for This?
This is great man - so glad I found your channel! Fellow Canadian as well!
Go Canada!
👍👍🎥 Great video Mark with beautiful footage, plus nice summary on Z vs P.
Stay safe.
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
All well said. Though, this full frame being cinematic BS must end.
Thanks for the tips Mark! Useful as always :)
thanks mate!
Thanks Mark for sharing your examples using the 24mm Sigma... absolutely stunning! I'm hoping this will be a nice lens to keep on the C500ii for most of the day :-)
It looks great on that camera, i can confirm!
Amazing content as usual... Keep creating and sharing... Great inspiration, God bless!
thanks man!
I can see the shadow camera on the actor at 3:43. It happens but im just saying!
Hi, first I wanted to thank you for the quality of your videos.
Your videos and documentary approach have helped me a lot in rethinking and writing my projects.
I am currently shooting with an APS-C camera and I have 2 prime lens 35mm and 50mm ( 52 and 75 mm equivalent on my camera ).
I love the rendering of your close-ups in 24mm, which is very interesting for interviews or portraits. I have two questions:
Do you have distortions with the sigma or canon at 24mm compared to other focal lengths : 35/50 mm in particular ?
Do you find the result of the canon interesting from 24 to 35mm, I'm interested in the zoom for the versatility ?
Thanks in advance :)
What is your favourite Zoom or Prime lens? (tutorial begins at 3:12 BY THE WAY)
I don't have a clue about lenses - good thing this video came up
@@JustWojtek Time to start testing some new lenses out!
i'm LOVING the Canon EF 50mm 1.8 stm..i love all of it, the quality, the sharpness, focus precision, the colors..ALL OF IT!
I also own a sigma 10-20 4-5.6 that is perfect for vlogging, i also own a 24-70 2.8 sigma but it's awful, cannot focus, colors are flat but in the wrong way, quality isn't there..
Probably the sigma 24-70 f/2.8 for Sony. I currently own the Tamron but the manual focus ring just sucks, hoping to switch at some point. EDIT: the Rokinon primes are also really great to use.
I used to avoid shooting on primes but as I've gotten more practice and knowledge I usually put a prime on first. 24 for the win!
Thanks for the insights Mark!
Excellent review!! Btw, what light are you using for this studio shot? Thx!
You’re Canadian? Then it’s gotta be “boke eh” ... nice vid! Primes all day if you have the luxury (and maybe a camera assistant in the budget) but there are times when a zoom is really a useful compromise. Which, is what you basically pointed out here, so just agreeing eh. Thanks.
Thanks eh
Would you still recommend a 24mm focal length on a crop sensor (knowing that it’ll have to be 16mm on APS-C to get the same focal distance)?
Yeah it’s still a great lens for cropped and then you have for if/when you are shooting full frame
@@markbone hey thanks I appreciate the reply haha
Awesome to see you picked up the new FX9!! Whats your thoughts on the upcoming RED Komodo 6k?
I can't wait to try the Komodo!
@@markbone Do you see yourself buying one?
Nice tips!! Thanks for sharing! I'm hesitating between 24mm prime and 17-28 zoom... For what I wanna use, I think 24mm 1.4 will be great. Keep it up bro!
I friggin love the 24mm prime
Enjoyed thanks. Mark - Manual focus - you did a video on it this BUT no one seems to talk much about MF - GH5, BlackMagic, etc these cameras demand MF how do budget youtubers and casual non-pro videographers deal with these situations? Thanks.
Love this video, very helpful and informative as usual! Also a collaboration with YC would be dope!😎
What would you recommend for people shooting on Micro 4/3? I’m shooting on a an Oly OMD. I’ve done still stuff but nothing professional. I’d like to start documenting travels once the world opens up again. Do you have any advice for someone dipping their toe into video work, especially someone that’s doing it all by themselves?
*Nuthin Beats The Nifty50*
Hello Mark. Love your Vids, congratz. A Question: The Sigma 18-35mm art, for example, on a BMPCC4k are not the same that are two primes?
no, not the same. a separate 18mm and a 35mm will get you more shallow DoF than a zoom 18-35mm
@@markbone 1.4f against 1.2f (2.4f on a m43), its a difference :).
One thing, I am a visual designer. Let's make a MB new logo? :D
What are your thoughts on the sigma 18-35 1.8? I hear it's one of the sharpest zooms. Also great low light & bokeh
mark why do you not use a gimbal?
Thanks for really cool quick guide
You’re welcome :)
Hi! Do you do online classes? Also, What do you think of the Sigma 18-35mm Art for APS-C?
I don't have the moment. I think it's a great lens when you need a zoom but it's still not a prime lens
Really helped me out. So glad I found your channel. Thank you. 🎥🎞💡👍
How about manual vs Autofocus? Have you done a video about it?
If one doesn't shoot manaual you are not a true cinematographer?
Great content .... learning from this... new to the filming game
You the man Mark!! Really enjoyed this one. Take care!
thanks man!!
Hey Mark!
I've noticed that you use a lot of low-angle shots and would be interested to hear what your motivation is for that.
I prefer to hold my camera by the top handle at my hip, thats all
@@markbone OK - thanks! Being relatively tall, shoulder mounting isn't an option for me and I was wondering if you were in the same scenario.
Thanks for the great info, Mark! I subbed to your channel cause of this! You nailed it at the part that if you want your shots to be focused on the subject, then buy primes. BTW, I only have an APS-C size canon mirrorless for now, will the 22mm F.2 and 56mm F1.4 suffice?
The lenses you have all depend on the content you’re shooting. There’s no way to say if those are the “right lenses” but you’re covering a wide focal range with them which is good
killer video, its really good to know your opinion, find you the most professional filmmaker fo the youtubers. thx men.
Matías Bravo Marambio thank you brother! Really appreciate that
A 1.4 lense on a full frame sensor looks amazing and really cinematic. But you also have to consider that it becomes really hard to get the focus, especially when you're alone. What do you think about the Sigma 18-35 1.8 on the BMPCC 6k?
I think increase your peaking and shoot iris at 1.8 or 2.0 on the prime for focus. I do manual focus on the 24mm but use a small HD 502 for focus and it really helps. No issues. Again, if I have the choice I’ll usually shoot on primes rather than the 18-35
Mark Bone: Are you using any filters on the Sigma Art 1.4 ? (A pro mist , or something, as sometimes it looks really nice/ soft/ with some glare)
love it brother, did you use the 24mm 1.4 sigma for the mile by mile documentary on the wide angle interview ?
No I believe we used a 35 or 50
Great video, only have 1 prime 50mm 1.8, bout to get it out!
👍👍👍. Some really beautiful footage
Thanks mate!
Which prime lenses would you recommend for an APS-C camera?
It is said "Bokay" actually. Apparently it's Japanese in origin. Though, I know a lot of people pronounce it however they want.
Same with Vice-versa being said as Visa-versa.
the japanese word is ボケ. its pronounced bokeh actually. bokay would be ボケイ.
@@joen9800 hm. Idk why the guy that told me said that then. He speaks Japanese, too.
@@BooneDavey he was probably confused. bokeh comes from the japanese word 暈ける(bokeru) which means "to be blurred"
Hey Mark, awesome video! I was wondering how you get those kind of shots from the people (13:10 min)? I mean how do you talk to them to look into the camera, without making it akward. So that you can get these authentic feelings from them? Would love to get some tips from you there, thank you!
The shots I get of people looking at the lens are usually the last shots that I get. That way I've had time to build a rapport
Great video Mark. Which wide prime did you use when you were shooting with Super35? I’m having trouble finding any fast primes below 20mm. Or did you just roll with the 24 1.4 and adjust your distance?
Jordie Cee had to shoot 2.8 f stop lenses at 18mm like the Rokinon
Can you do a color grade video
Why shallow dop is more cinematic? a lot of movies have great production designs and they do utilize deep focus to show them (And they are mostly shot with primes closed down). Of course, having the option to go shallow and gain more light is great but shallow dop itself isn't more "cinematic" in my opinion. What t stop and what depth of field should be the decision that directors and dps make to serve the story not just to "look pretty" .
Shallow helps you when you don't have good budgets for set design or great locations. Often when people refer to films with deep DoF they're talking about movies like To the Wonder by Terrence Malik or Citizen Kane (both films that I love) but both films with huge budgets and big set design that helps deep DoF. I don't want to paint with broad strokes when I saw shallow = cinematic but it can help when you don't have the budget. Ultimately a proper story, location, score and acting will far exceed a film feeling cinematic than compared to just shooting wide open on a prime lens.
I am looking at a set of 2 Zoom Cine Lenses, the DZOFilm Pictor lenses, 20-55mm T2.8 and 50-125mm T2.8. Both are parfocal and for Super 35 Sensors. I have a Canon C200 which has this type of sensor. What is your opinion on Cine Zoom lenses such as this type mentionned ?
Hi Mark. I'm a wedding filmmaker & now also pick up more corporate works. Im also moving from DSLR to mirrorless ( A7s3 ), would you prefer getting a photo lens or cine lens ( meike 35/50 ) for this type of work ?
one more thing, I am one man band
How do you like IRIX Cine Lenses?
So on apsc you would recommend 16mm?
16 or 18mm prime for sure!
@@markbone i mean the sigma 18-35mm would fit this. For me it feels like a prime lens and you got your 18 and 35mm lens in one
@@Milan-cf1xe Naw, not the same. Great lens but not the same as a prime. Anytime you introduce multiple elements for zooming you usually sacrifice some of the shallow DoF
@@markbone i have also a canon fd 24mm and 50mm so thats fine
How do you feel about a mixed set of primes? Would you intercut a Sigma 24mm f/1.4, a Tamron 35mm w/1.4, and a Canon 85mm f/1.4?
Yeah your audience would never notice or care. Mixing primes is fine IMO. Hollywood DP’s sometimes want a matching set just to keep the look the same and technical aspects consistent for their team
