I was allowed to stay up and watch this on a Friday night as a 10/11 year old. I just loved it. Funny how humour changes. Both were such fine actors. I even saw Alfie Bass as Topol and he was outstanding. Happy days
Brilliant Tony! Thanks ever so much for putting this on RUclips so we can all enjoy it again mate. I was a little boy in Belfast when this was on and I used to laugh myself silly at these two and their " funny" accents. I remembered them from " The Army Game "so I was already a small fan. Bill Fraser in real life was a very kind and thoughtful man who had seen action in his war service. I think he took part in the Normandy landings too. I read in an autobiography of someone who escapes me at the moment, about Bill bumping into an old army chum in a street in London a year or two after the war was over. The man was a little down on his luck in finding theatre work and Bill helped him get by and even put him up for a while If I remember rightly. He gave him a few pounds too just to make sure he had a meal and things when he met him. I'm sorry I cannot remember the person's name but I do remember that he was quite famous eventually and never forgot the kindness of Bill. The work of Barry Took and the wonderful Marty Feldman as well, so how could it miss? Thanks again mate. I wish you rainbows.
This is actually the first episode from Series One, titled 'Civvy Street', first broadcast on 23 Sep. 1960. I was 7 and remember it well, I can even remember the Army Game from which this was a spin-off!
@ Charmaine Zoe you must have a good memory. I am the same age . All I can remember is falling over backwards with laughter every time Snudge drunk a cup of tea!
Wonderful.. And so great to see Clive Dunn getting a feel of his future role as Lance Corporeal Jones role in Dad's Army, before he probably even knew it
I'm too young to have watched this when it was originally shown, but I thoroughly enjoyed the chance to watch something that my parents and grandparents would have watched. Clive Duun's character was clearly a prototype of Corporal Jones :)
Good riddance to bad rubbish lol , i haven’t heard that for so many years , my dad used to say that a lot in the good ole days when I was a kid in the 60s, holy guacamole, that’s a long time ago lol 😂
Just saw Alfie Bass in Moonraker and remembered this show. I was knee high to a grasshopper. Just hoped that somebody on RUclips would have it. Thanks for the memories. ;-)
Thanks for uploading this, I've been watching The Army Game for a couple of months, from Hartnell, soon falling for Fowler, and now recognising what a Duo Bootsie and Snudge are
Last time i saw Bill Frazer was in the refurbished Whitehall Theatre late 80's when they put on When we are Married. He was the photographer. They were all in it - Timothy West, Brian Murphy, Patricia Hayes. Great production
Yes, it was a good show in it's day. It was as mentioned previously here a spin off of another famous show the Army Game. Which led to a long career for another famous actor Bernard Bresslaw, He even had a record in the hit parade, " Mad Passionate Love ", which I used to imitate for my party piece at Christmas. Other established stars of the time that were regulars in the Army Game were Michael Medwin and Harry Fowler, along side other recognisable 50's actors. My brother used to have friends in the entertainment business and regularly had drink nights with Alfie Bass, Harry Fowler, Bill Frazer and Clive Dunn, My brother, at the time was the manager of a carpet business in Putney High St. in London and Clive Dunn was a customer and every time he passed the shop he would acknowledge with a wave.
My great Uncle Ian Thornburn was once on a train with Alfie Bass in the 1960s. He said Alfie didn’t give a damn about how loudly he passed wind. My great uncle said the whole carriage was very embarrassed, as their was a lot of elderly women present. Bass was reading the Telegraph through each event , and he barely looked up.
I don't know how old this is, but I'm convinced Bootsie and Snudge was the first programme i ever saw on tv. I was born in 1957 so I'm guessing this must be from 1962/63? Isn't RUclips amazing.
8:30 It's Henry McGee, of The Benny Hill Show. Checking up, he couldn't have been more than 31 or 32 here. Amazing!! He looked like one of the aliens from Mars Attacks.
Oh I remember this sooo well, but only after an earlier series containing "Bootsie and Snudge," called, I think, "The Army Game." Even as a child of 9 or 10 I can remember feeling very sorry for Snudge. I think he died soon after...
Henry McGee hardly looks any different than when he was straight man to Benny Hill over a decade later...and the wonderful Clive Dunn prempting his part as Corporal Jones in Dad's Army almost to the letter. I'd forgotten he was in it. :-)
I am 68 and this is the first TV programme that I remember watching with my Mum and Dad. Lovely days.

Well said, Vicki. Kevin Whelan
Awh...we loved this as kids. Droopy drawers became the go to insult in the playground 😆 Thanks.
Oh My Stars, I remember these chaps. I watched them with my dad. They are hilarious.
Brilliant Tony!

That was Eric Sykes.
@@stewartmcardle8149 Thanks mate.
It's been driving me crazy for so long.
I used to watch this with my dad about 60 years ago; last saw Alfie Bass in "Are You Being Served?" Thanks for posting this.
LOL. Clive Dunn at 14:00 playing essentially the same character he later played in Dad's Army. I remember this show fondly.

I love looking back to shows that I remember seeing as a child.
Victory at sea was on before wunit

Clive Dunn specialised in old gents. He can be seen doing them in films and TV things well before Dad's Army.
Good riddance to bad rubbish lol , i haven’t heard that for so many years , my dad used to say that a lot in the good ole days when I was a kid in the 60s, holy guacamole, that’s a long time ago lol 😂

Fantastic, real comedy, no smut no swearing, just laughter, oh for those days, thank you, ✅👍🌟🙌
Cline Dunn even mentions Lord Kitchener and the Sudan in this role too lol
14:00 Clive Dunn before doing the same routine in Dad's Army.
Thanks for uploading this, I've been watching The Army Game for a couple of months, from Hartnell, soon falling for Fowler, and now recognising what a Duo Bootsie and Snudge are
Alfie Bass is briliant. That bit at 19 minutes is hysterical.
lol i had forgotten how funny bill fraser was bless em
Alfie Bass was a Genius.
No, he was just an actor.
He’s was a genius actor
Joe Smoke ...ahem...I'll be leaving you now sir....
@@CrankCase08an excellent actor.
@@chimera8421 Not really. He always played a similar type of character. In other words, a one-trick pony.
Last time i saw Bill Frazer was in the refurbished Whitehall Theatre late 80's when they put on When we are Married. He was the photographer. They were all in it - Timothy West, Brian Murphy, Patricia Hayes. Great production
Does anyone remember old johnson ? The world is coming to an end. Strange how that episode had stuck in my memory. Clive Dunn as johnson.
This is the very first episode (S01 E01), entitled Civvy Street.
It does seem to be the very first episode...ahem! I'll be leaving you now sir! (I never ever forgot that!)
Written by Barry Took & Marty Feldman , they wrote Round The Horne for BBC radio
Took and Feldman were great. I like the device of the inner monologue with facial reactions in real time.
These two from The Army Game were a good double act. They were sick actors independently too.
Simply brilliant, thank you so much.
N.B. Clive Dunn was only 40 when acted in this series. Any chance of posting any more of the 104 episodes PLEASE?
It was a SPILLOVER sequel from the Army Game... Still amusing 60 yeas later
My favourite!
I've just got to love a guy called Bill Fraser.
Me and uncle Alf used to watch this together !
Alfie sounds like he could be Micky Flanagan's dad 😁

Blimey, the stuff we used to laugh at!

A fellow Rooster. Chinese astrology.
I was born in 1955 and I remember it too. "Excused boots" Bisley!
@Gregory Jones Yes, I think it originally ran for a couple of years or so in the early 60's and was revived again in colour in the 70's.
Brillant comedy from a bygone era!
Fantastic pair ,loved this series unlike today's sitcoms this ones funny, and is not about middle class morons who are unfunny
ferreday1
Middle class morons are never funny, that’s why working class sitcoms always work better!

Now I’m convinced we are living in a simulation. I’m sure there is a way to go back to my childhood
The Music Used in The Classic 1960’s Sitcom Was Based On The Nursery Rhyme Pop Goes The Weasel
Wow, part of British sitcom history and it's never on TV.
Too many soaps and reality shows to show these again sadly...
Remember Alfie Bass being in Sickness and Health with Warren Mitchell...........?
I wasn't even born yet when this came out. I was born in 2008.
Corporal Jones in the making. :-)

Bill Fraser (who played Snudge) actually lived another 25 years, not dying until 1987. He remained active in the profession right to the end.
The brilliant Alfie Bass and Bill Fraser
Can you upload the other episodes if you have them? Thanks much.
It's young Mr. Goldberg!
Old Mr. Goldberg doesn't get out very much.
Never seen this before. Funny.
Loved it simple
The internal monologue voice and aside started here? peep show - should credit em … eh … my lad

Proper comedy no swearing just fun
Was Clive Dunn ever young?...

My husband worked there at the time. Lovely to see familiar names on the productioncredits.

Clive Dunn must’ve been born old.
