Your film in no way looked like it was a one person crew, it's really impressive what you managed to achieve by yourself. I like that you openly admit you used a colour grade to fix scenes where the lighting wasn't as good it really demystifies the process for me. University tries to make me think that filmmakers are these infallible beings, so it's really refreshing to hear a great filmmaker like yourself acknowledge that a film will always have problems to fix and they don't have to sink your film. You have really taught me to use what I have rather than to wait around for other people.
You make filmmaking less and less intimidating for me and many others with everything you make dude!

You mentioned this in here, but the scene lit by car lights was really good. I liked how it illuminated the main part of the scene, but then when one car left there was just enough lifting to illuminate Darren and the car, making it to where they were almost the only things you could see, growing smaller in a dark void. That was awesome, and what makes it better is that it was all in one shot.

I said it on your other channel but Anyone Else But Me really grabbed my attention in the opening scene. I thought I might watch it in bits over a couple of days but I watched the whole thing because I just didn't know what to expect next. The meta scenes were fantastic. The "special fx' scene fucking floored me! So out of nowhere and silly I had to pause it because I was laughing so hard! The actors were all fantastic and Blake (Darren) really shows his acting range and it's so cool you were able to bring out the best from everyone. Also extremely surprised to hear that you did everything by yourself! I figured you would have had at least a small crew to achieve what you did because everything is so well done. Amazing job all around!

Mate it was bloody brilliant, I think it is your best work at least to me. Blake was brilliant, in fact every single performance from all characters were brilliant, I was especially taken aback by Sven and Chad's performances. It was funny, it was dramatic, it had emotional depth, it was meta and surreal, with moments of horror and moments of tense drama, but all with which had this comedic thread perfectly woven through it.
Really great work, Joel. I look forward to continue watching your progress as a film maker

Thank you for addressing why it was shot in 4:3. It did exactly what you wanted. The characters came alive. The shots were beautiful.
I also appreciated the sound design. I noticed this movie had a score but only because I was trying to dissect the movie as I watched it. It blended in perfectly.
I didn't notice the lighting. I did notice the shaky camera but only in scenes where things were going nuts. It made the whole experience feel like it was going off the rails, and boy howdy did it ever go off the rails.

I thought it looked really good, and I enjoyed it a lot, an interesting plot, my main criticism is that it felt that Trent's character felt a bit pointless (besides the inital scene), and some bits felt they could have been delved into a bit more. Besides that it was really interesting. Good job to you, and the cast.

    • @MrOnosa
      @MrOnosa 2 месяца назад

It was unconventional. Every scene with Trent felt so intense. I was left a bit confused about their thread as well, it felt like it completely unraveled. But I took a lot away from that. When they were on camera, I was on high alert. What role are they playing? Who are they? Who are they really?? I don't want to find out. I think they, more than anyone else, are pretending to be someone else for the benefit of others.

You made a great point about your intentional use of 4:3 aspect ratio. This story was a really personal story, a few characters at a time. The environmental context in wider shots can be used to convey that. That means more environment to set up before shooting. Alternatively, by leaving the wider frame largely empty you can convey isolation or capture more motion in a static shot.

Your long oner was incredible, the cinematography across the board was fantastic. You managed to make interior vehicle shots feel different than the usual types we see and i loved how you allowed scenes to stay on a shot longer rather than cutting away constantly.

Joel, Blake & all, thank you so much for the great film!
Re- the Audio stuff, it sounded okay except for in some scenes there is phasing (voice sounds mildly doubled). This happens because the mics were slightly different distances from the source, so there are a couple of milliseconds of difference in the timing of the overlapping recordings. It's not the worst- but is an easy fix. Take a peek at the audio tracks and then try to nudge the track that is a little delayed back a bit so the little peaks and valleys on the waveforms line up. That way the audio adds together properly and sounds clearer.
The mixing was fine otherwise, just felt I'd mention this, not a criticism- it is super impressive to make this film under all the constraints and the rough edges are charming.

I can never decide between cinemascope and 4'3. I agree, it feels more like a painting when its a square, I find it easier to focus attention on one spot and compose a really nice Full image without vacancies. But cinemascope laaaaandscapes *chef's kiss*. I love the long dramatic lines that a wider aspect ratio gives. It feels somehow more poetic to me, while a square format feels more home-y and lived in. Both have their place for sure.

This movie was genuinely amazing, I watched it twice and it was even better the second watch. The acting was fantastic and I am so excited to see more movies where you are behind the camera!

I loved it Joel, it was so good!! You're a huge inspiration to me, I wish more people in my film program watched you. I'm curious how much you prepped before hand for scenes and plot or if a lot of it was totally improvised? Also what is your method for directing actors that are improvising when you're also getting multiple camera angles? How do they match the performance?

This was incredible, I knew you were smart, and putting Blake Rosier in the main role proved it. Also, this was funny as hell, laughed out loud 3 times in the third act, amazing thank you for this. Trent killed it, so glad that subplot existed, and the ending!?!!!!! Didnt know what to think at first but wowwww

Finding out that it was only you behind the camera is soooo inspiring!!!
I am playing around with making my first films and its a bit nerve wracking that all I really have is a camera and tripod. It is a huge confidence boost to know that even now at your skill level, you still don't use all that fancy stuff.

I was shocked by how good it was. I knew you had talent for comedy from your weekly uploads and was not expecting a serious film but I was blown away by it. Every character was unique and I loved how there was basically no exposition yet their backstories were understandable - I think my favorite scene was the tension after Darren saw the film.
Great work, I'm really looking forward to the rest of the year

I've watched quite a few of your movies now, I like your style a lot.
Anyone Else But Me felt like your work, but *extra*. I really enjoyed all the character work, the cinematography, and sound. That FX shot was incredible. All the talent was truly on it, nobody was half-assing a single line.
AEBM is definitely my favourite film of yours. It's a big surprise this was a one-person crew, it definitely doesn't seem like it.

The difference between the two is like, holy hell Joel's editing and directing is getting WILD. You're gonna be deadly by the time 2025 comes.

i watched your movie. i've been trying to make a short movie but it is so hard to convice myself to start it. i had two attemps with two other ideas before. i gathered my friends multiple times and even recorded two scenes but for some reason it is hard to finish the damn idea. i said this because i want to tell you i know a little bit about how hard it is to make a short movie, let alone a feature one. so the fact that you made this in a month is really amazing. and it had some good moments for me. the part where the main character cannot appreciate his friend's movie was good and i really liked the opening scene.
and something crazy happened to me while watching the movie. i've been trying to write a short story about different segments of my life and this week i was writing a scene where the character is looking at himself in the mirror, while he is naked, and he tells himself "i was a child once. what happened?"
this is the question i've been asking myself more and more as i grow older. when i heard the exact line in your movie, i was baffled.
anyway, sorry for the waffling. i hope you keep doing what you do, and i wish i could help you through patron but i live in Iran and i dont have access to that kind of stuff. i have more things to say about your movie but this comment is getting to long.
    good luck Joel.

I think the only real criticism i have of the movie that the ambient sound aaaaaaaall the way at the start in that retro diner didnt sound like it fit. Sounded like it shouldve been the sound for a pretty big restaurant not a like, 20 seater in the afternoon
Other than that this was so great!

Just got a chance to watch it and it was phenomenal. As the creator you're the only one who sees the flaws cus everything did feel intentional. A creative story while also being very funny, everyone who worked on it is no doubt very proud of themselves and you for coming together and making this happen. Can't wait to see what else comes this year.
P.S. Also love Christopher's cgi work, his stuff is always simultaneously horrifying and excellent. Hope you have the opportunity to put goofy vfx gags/bits in a few more of the 10 left this year!

Hey Joel, can’t wait to see the new film! I’m conceptualizing a feature right now and I was curious about what kind of sound equipment you used here and how you got it, like if you just mounted it to the camera or recorded it on your phone, etc.
I’m a big fan of the one-man crew mentality so any tips would be greatly appreciated (sound is not my strong suit either, haha)

the movie was really great, i agree with alot of comments here talking about how many characters were really sad and also funny in a way. I dont want to sound annoying or demanding but one thing i hope joel do a movie about is story with one crazy concept that involves magic/páranormal/scifi in a really small way, like some of the short videos with a crazy concept, like just one person having a weird wizard/ghost guy that comes from the past but knows alot about present times or a person who saved a mystical creature in the past and have 3 wishs to make, already made 2 wishes and are still affected by those last wishes in good and bad ways, soo they are still scared and uncertain about making more wishes and what those wishes could change about their life.

This film is an incredible experience. Blake's and all the actor's performances drew me in from the very beginning to the very end. Kevin's original score hit home with the mood. I don't know much about filming, but everything you said about 4:3 makes so much sense. It's touching to hearing you talk passionately about your craft. You have so many gold nuggets of wisdom, like your thoughts on imperfections. Thanks for existing, Joel. And shout out to the special effects shot.

All the creativity and cool shots and scene dialogue had me wondering how much writing/storyboarding prep went into it before the month (or year) started - if it all started and ended inside of one month, I'm just stunned
