  • Mr. William McKay Aitken is a Scottish-born Indian travel writer, adventurer, mountain lover, motorcyclist, historian, spiritual seeker, walking encyclopaedia, and even an early conservationist. His intellectual curiosity and pull towards Eastern spirituality, especially Hinduism, brought him to India in 1959, at the young age of 25 years. From 1960 to 1972, he lived in Himalayan ashrams at Kausani and Mirtola, settling finally in Mussoorie in the ‘Oakless” with his lady love Maharani Prithwi Bir Kaur.
His spiritual quest and his wanderlust made him travel all over India on his Enfield bike. His motorcycling books “Riding the Ranges (1997) and “Divining the Deccan” (1999) have fired the imaginations of bikers the nation over. They were India’s first-ever “biking books”.
He has authored more than a dozen books about India, its rivers, mountains, Spirituality and Steam trains. His books on Indian railways including “Travels by a Lesser Line” (1993) and “Branch Line to Eternity” (2001) were India’s first-ever modern-era books on railway adventures.
Bill Sahib, as he’s fondly known as, is without exaggeration, a living legend.
