  • To the narcissist, you are a character in his dream-state and shared fantasy dreamscape. He condenses and symbolizes your figure and displaces negative affects onto you in preparation for your devaluation and his separation. An interpretation of one narcissist's dream follows.

It is your giggle 🤭 but on a more serious note I feel an insurmountable heaping pile of sympathy for a certain individual and myself as well for being so ill at the time I met them . Grief , ignorance and addiction ; a walking , breathing , living supply for a hopeless case to riddle with dynamite and destruction . I still battle with anger for and towards them but it's much lighter and I'm forgiving both as I push forward with life , therapy and making new memories without that individual. Thank you Professor, thank you .

The image of the narcissist as inverted human is vivid and rings true. I wonder if maladaptive daydreaming (or escapism affecting quality of life) and narcissism have any commonalities, possibly neurologically.
I have narcolepsy, and the study of sleep and dreams interests me (although if I never read Freud's Dora again it will be too soon). My dreams begin instantly on going to sleep and are sometimes so engrossing and constant that I have severe difficulty waking up without help. I'm sure others without narcolepsy can do this as well, but a nice side effect is that I can wake, go back to sleep and resume the same dream by thinking about it, catching the visual threads again, and going back into the dream.
Thank you for this thoughtful and engaging video, Dr. Vaknin.

    hi dr! fantastic video again!
question- if the narcissist cares so much about his image and being considered “weak”, why is it that they perpetually behave and “act out” in many ways that are weak.. character wise, weasel-like,also very “karen” like. they must know that this is how they come off, correct? is being weak something that the narc is fully aware of?

I especially liked the part about mental disorders being like the church and the inquisition. As someone who resorts to self-flagellation when i feel unsafe, i always felt the idealized version of me as a god figure, trying to punish and differentiate from my real, flawed form.
It's interesting that based on the analysis of this video, i treat MYSELF as a dream character, dramatizing my symbolic role as a certain TYPE of person instead of a full individual (that's why i love archetypes, psychoanalysis, tarot cards, etc). On the lookout for an identity i guess..

Sam, can you comment on what happens when an NPD attempts to introspect and unravel their shortcomings? What are the ideal internal strategies if there is not adequate supply? Is there a difference with BPD who have reached a relative therapeutic steady state with coping strategies? I'm interested in your thoughts and musings.

Narc told me to get psychological help, because he was upset I was leaving him and knows he needs it
I said ‘you first’ and blocked him. Would that cause mortification or narcissistic injury, Sam?

Edited: I don’t think i mortified but possibly injured him giving him back his own attempted projection. I am Borderline so it was pretty easy.

Hey sam i have a very thought proviking question. Have you read about the brain studying the brain?
The challenges in healing from NPD have parallels with the complexities of self-awareness and the brain studying itself. The very cognitive tools and processes affected by the disorder become integral to the attempt at healing. So its like a paradox.
Can u talk about this? Its like trying to see your eyes without a mirror.
