How to play Jam with PME Part 1 from DG'z Notebook - SEN Lesson Series (Pt. 1 of 3).

Here's a quick play-along lesson from one of my practice sessions featuring The Jam with P.M.E - Part 1 from DG'z Notebook by David Garibaldi of Tower of Power.

The Jam with P.M.E is the first chapter in the book and expands upon DG's permutation concept introduced in his book Future Sounds:

In this exercise, DG shifts the starting position of a groove by a quarter note, resulting in 4 completely different feeling variations derived from the same groove. Each example is played as a 4-bar phrase, with the last bar of each phrase acting as a transition into the next permutation.
The first part of the video features a musical application of the groove using the track "Eastside" from The Code of Funk by DG.

The next section features the isolated exercise with an audible and visual metronome set to 100 BPM. The counts are included underneath the transcription to encourage students to count out loud as they practice. This is crucial in getting these exercises to feel good and is stressed throughout the book.
Helpful Tips:
- Take it slow.
- COUNT!
- Use a metronome.
- Repeat these individually as many times as it takes for you to feel comfortable before stringing the phrases together.
