Awesome playing, love the blues with slide. Btw. John Dopyera (Jan Dopjera) was originally from Slovakia (former Czechoslovakia) and his dad was a violin player and luthier. John created a resophonic guitar and with his brothers they founded DOBRO (DOpjera BROthers) company. "Dobro" is a pun and in an approximate translation to Slovak language means good (dobre) - which was also their slogan: "Dobro means good in any language!".
Your guitar sounds perfect. Mine is a Recording King. No differene from a National at all, or not by much. That Gm tuning is gorgeous. I never thought of that. Thanks.
LOL... I am skint but the moment I have a couple of hundred bucks I am straight to the shop to get one. And all because of this video. Particularly 1:48 !!!
Thank you so much............really great.I play my resonator every day on the stern of my barge in France.........mmmmmmmm,but you are much better than me and I feel Priviliged to have heard you play !
"Better" is also in the ears of the beholder. Some people like Delta blues (clean sound), while others like the noisy slide work of the bluesmen that hailed from the Mississippi hill country (think Fred McDowell). To each their own. Like the difference between a brass bodied resonator and a birchwood Stella. Not better. Not worse. Just different.
I've also bought myself a resonator made in Asia, my wallet can't manage an original National or a Mule. It's called Harley Benton and I must say that I'm positively surpriced. The finnish of the craftmanship is exellent, and it holds the tuning great and plays well up higher on the frets too. I haven't changed a thing on it yet, not even the strings, so I can recommend it for a poor blues lover.
Andreas Brink I have had time to practice it more. Getting there. I love your stuff. My amateur efforts are on my channel. Inspired to get a resonator partly by you. I would be honoured if you would take a look and give me some tips. 👍🎸🎼🎶🎶
Thanks that was fun. May I say I’m confused though. I have a 1920,s Regal tobacco sunburst resonator guitar that I was told that the Regal company was purchased by the Dobro company (Brothers) and they thus began manufacturing Dobro guitars. Anywho history on the subject varys I guess.
Hi Andreas, Great playing! Yes, as with any sub £1000 resonator the body and neck is made in China but with Icarus guitars the assembly and setup is done in the UK. Sorry by the way that I somehow missed a couple of sharp fret ends. I love your channel and of course have subscribed. All the best - Gareth (Icarus Guitars)
Thanks for the great demo and lovely playing! I have had a look at them online and they look like an interesting option. Chinese made then assembled and set up in England. Cheers!
I had a national tri cone but put it up for trade for a 1969 Martin D35 S couldn't afford another national so down the road I bought a Gretsh resonator. Sounds just as good for a fraction of the price. But I can say I did own a national.
I gotta say man, props to you. Your playing is amazing. I have to ask, do you own all these instruments or do you work somewhere that they happen to come in?
To my ears, it sounds more tinny and not as full as my National. It does not have the "bark" of my vintage Dobro either. The cheaper knock offs are passable in sound, but are different than the more expensive resonators. Strings and set up can make a big difference as well.
There is a difference, but in my opinion it's not nearly as big as the price difference implies. And as you say, setup and strings are important. Of course the player is the most important factor.
Great playing man! It is interesting how mushc treble you get with the EJ42 strings. For me they are so much mellower or darker that us why I stuck with martin m980 nickel strings on my Gretches.
Thank you very much for your music, I am from Buenos Aires Argentina, and I would like to know how you tuned or in which note you tuned each string !! ?? thank you !!
Thanks! I use two tunings in this video, open G and and open G minor. Open G is DGDGBD low to high, open G minor is DGDGBbD low to high. (To make things a bit more complicated I am also tuned down a whole step, but you don't have to do that to sound like this).
Andreas Brink thank you very much for answering !! in the video at 1:00, which one do you use? sorry but i can't make it sound the same !! Thank you very much for your cordiality!
You can’t compare a Chinese guitar to a National. I have both, and the difference in craftsmanship and tonal qualities doesn’t even come close. While the price of a Chinese made guitar is cheaper, the old saying goes - “ you get what you pay for “ .
lovely tone and real nice playing skills you have there how does this guitar stack up against the icarus triolian im thinking of pulling the trigger on one ? thanks and regards
Thanks for your interest, but most likely I won't be doing any slide lesson videos. Bass guitar is my main instrument and it takes all the time I've got.
I appreciate that! You don't really need lessons to play slide though, just tune your guitar to open G or D and listen to some Son House and Robert Johnson and you'll be on your way.
Icarus aren't Chinese made! Where'd you get that, BigDog?! Their a company manufacturing out of the good ole' UK. Their rap sheet says it all. How is that resonator? Have you played any more Icarus made resonators BigDog? Im thinking of getting an Icarus.
You know what sucks? Back in the day any out of work hobo slide bluesman could afford a National steel guitar but now they cost upwards of $3000. What poor out of work hobo could afford that?
That's true! And it's the reason why most famous bluesmen from back then played a Stella or some other cheap guitar. But that also tells you that it's the player and not the instrument that's important.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot... PS: Andreas, your playing nor your instruction sucks. I really dig what you're doin', man. You are one swingin' cat. Or should I have said slidin'? LOL.
I did a Google search for Icarus resonator guitars but absolutely nothing came up. I do tend to stay away from Chinese made instruments, though. Not because they're poorly made (most are in fact, very well made), but because of the appalling human rights and animal right violations they are guilty of. The bone nuts on these guitars are enough to turn me off. Considering their illegal dog and cat slaughtering industry, the bones could probably be from dogs and cats! Yuck. Now if they were made from some synthetic material, that'd be cool. The National black rust resonator has an ebony nut. Anyway, this is just me rambling. I couldn't find Icarus anywhere online. Just saying...
Awesome playing, love the blues with slide. Btw. John Dopyera (Jan Dopjera) was originally from Slovakia (former Czechoslovakia) and his dad was a violin player and luthier. 1:18 Bro, that is the most grungy reso blues of all times. Salute
Thanks!
Grungy, how? Which grunge band did it remind you of?

thank you for your playing and not just talking = i see ! you are a real musician guitar player ! good show .
Thanks! There's way too much talking on RUclips.
This has more or less inspired me to get a resonator, well done Sir!
Thanks, and I hope you enjoy your resonator!
LOL... I am skint but the moment I have a couple of hundred bucks I am straight to the shop to get one. And all because of this video. Particularly 1:48 !!!
definitely me too !! purchasing one too and getting started! Practice practice practise
I've always wanted to see if I could make a resonator out of welded together license plates
you mean like in prison ???
Go for it - I have seen folks make them out of pots and pans--
Soup cans
Throw a biscuit resonator in their and I guarantee ya you could
wait fr??
Can't get enough of that sound!!
Played open G for more than 40 years, Have someNationals and a copper slide. Great song. Great guitarist
Thanks!
Open G, the tuning that just keeps giving!
Man i love that spooky minor tuning .Im going to try it thank you
Go ahead!
Thank you so much............really great.I play my resonator every day on the stern of my barge in France.........mmmmmmmm,but you are much better than me and I feel Priviliged to have heard you play !
Thanks! Remember that "better" is just another word for "have practiced more".
"Better" is also in the ears of the beholder. @@AndreasBrink - kind words.
@@robsgirl6465 I concur all over the place.
love open g on slide
That makes two of us.
it's open f ;D
Nice demonstration. My tricone is a Recording King. It too is a great guitar for the money and sounds every bit as a National.
Eu gosto muito de ver e ouvir voce tocar o blues. muito o brigado.
Très bon et bien joué 👏👏👏👏👏🎸🎶🎼🎵

Thanks!
Awesome sound bro!
And now I need a resonator
Really spellbound & Absolutely beautiful 💛

Waiting for your next video Bro

Superb. Just learned the first piece. My resonator is a Michael Messer Lightning. Sounds just like it. Thanks a bunch. Inspiring.
Thanks Phil!

@@philknight6844 I checked your slide video out and you're on the right track. Add in a nice, even vibrato and it will be even better.
Andreas Brink thanks a lot. I will do. Tone wide is the aim. 👍❤️👍

Very nice overview of the bottleneck (resonphonic) guitar playing manner.
I really like your approach and tone.
Keep on picking and sliding!

This an awesome looking guitar...not to be used in a WWE event, though.
Beautiful stuff! very well played slide guitar!

It sounds great. Nice playing.
Love the second last one!! A horrid story
Yeah good sound for sure. I have a national Delphi deluxe....the delphi deluxe maybe a little more raspy not as smooth if you will.
I gotta say man, props to you. Your playing is amazing. I have to ask, do you own all these instruments or do you work somewhere that they happen to come in?
Thanks Brandyn! I don't own all the instruments in my videos, just a few of them.
i love your videos !!!

Excellent. would you have to use a busking amp with this, or could it be heard sufficiently in say a crowded mall
Can I ask what is the ragtime type piece called? The first song in G minor. Thanks
It doesn't have a name, it's a little thing I made up for this video.
Really. Nice job, it’s got a nice groove to it. 👍
wonderful
Many things and materials can be used as a slide
A guy I knew had a medicine bottle that was the perfect size for his finger and it was made of glass
Duane Allman used a medicine bottle and he wasn't half bad.
Great playing man! It is interesting how mushc treble you get with the EJ42 strings. For me they are so much mellower or darker that us why I stuck with martin m980 nickel strings on my Gretches.
Thank you! I haven't noticed any lack of treble in the EJ42s. Likely it has to do with what guitar you put them on.
Super
Thanks!
Wondeful love it
Thank you! Cheers!

Single cone or tricone? The looks are from both.... and where can I buy one?
Sincle cone. Icarus Guitars UK.
