@@awrely Because film noir and neo noir never were simply narrations on the 60s and 70s. You're forgetting the use of tilted camera angles, interplay of light and shadows, unbalanced framing. The extremely frequent use of thematic motifs (alienation would be an example in the case of Drive. And many other things. Summing these genres up as simple narrations on 2 decades is moronic.
I just finished watching this movie. No huge twist ending or over-the-top special effects. Just a well made movie.

I feel like Driver is a guy who's been doing what he does best (driving criminals at night) for a long time. He moves from place to place and always change his name. It shows when a guy recognise him in a diner.
Yet, his life has lost meaning and he wants out. That's why he accepts to become an actual professional driver and he tries to be part of a standard family. But by the end he realise that he cannot change who he is and he's better off going away and starting the same vicious circle again.
I think it's more like he's someone who completely lost meaning in life and became cold and professional, then someone comes along and gives him a taste of something beautiful and fulfilling, which makes him emotionally invested and so get out of his character
Kinda reminds me of Baby Driver except Baby has more backstory and lives happily ever after when he gets released from jail.
Makes the Scorpion jacket more iconic, meaning he's a scorpion and that's just what he does.

Drive is definitely one of my favorite movies and I feel it's a great mix of style and substance, the fact that it kind of started inspiring people to make various neo noir stories make it more interesting to me.
So true! When i first watched Drive, I knew nothing about the film. I was expecting some generic hollywood car chase action film, boy was i wrong! And man, I was so glad i was wrong. Definitely one of my favourite films as well.
It brings back the good old times, when films weren´t so chaotic. Where films were had a slower pace (because they had to, technically ) and took the time to portray reactions and emotions, rather than to tell them trough dialogue or actions. And it does seem like drive has had an effect on the film market in some sense

well not just movies but other stuff Hotline Miami is a game heavily influenced by Drive, even GTA V has a couple of references to Drive they even have the jacket for trevor except its a crab not a scorpion, The Guest was a movie inspired by Drive those are the ones that stand out to me
Young Knight Refn's neon trilogy beautifully combines style and substance: The Neon Demon is loaded with symbolism (my favorite of the three), Driver is a super hero film for grownups and Only God Forgives is the most divisive.

This movie is just unbelievably good. Every aspect of it had meaning, purpose and was so meticulously well thought out. I'm a strong movie critic but even I could not find a fault in it from beginning right through to the end
I think the whole thing went over my head. Tried watching it with my family a year ago and as much as a tried to pay attention to all the details and context, I just couldn’t get anything out of it. I’ve genuinely forgotten most of the film which sucks cuz I really wanted to enjoy it, but I think others overhyped it for me. It’s not for a lack of interest in storytelling or anything like that, I love good storytelling, I just couldn’t get anything out of the film. Loved the music and cinematography but the plot and motifs went right over my head

Thanks for the analysis. Drive, The Neon Demon and Only God Forgives (Refn's 'Neon Trilogy') represent some of the most misinterpreted (and under-interpreted) works in recent cinema history.

These 3 movies are so beautifully shot. Really good series.
Absolutely agree. Drive is an absolute masterpiece, but Only God Forgives and The Neon Demon we're both incredible films respectivly. Refn makes the type of films that must be watched twice or three times to really understand all the themes and give the audience another look at how beautifully they're filmed.

Yeah after analysing Hotline Miami, I'd want to rewatch its inspiration too. God I love them both.

This movie, and hotline Miami are my favorite movie and games of all time respectively. The fact that they’re connected just makes me even happier

I understand why the driver couldn’t go back to Irene but man did I want him to. Great ending , but it definitely hurt to see him have to leave her high and dry for her safety :(
This film will always be one that I admire. The more people break it down to its artist elements, the more my love of it grows. Every Frame a Painting did a fantastic video on it a couple of years ago too.
John Klein Same with me, the more I delve into Drive, the more I love Drive. It is one of the most artistic and analytical films of all time.
I remember when this came out and a lot of ppl complained about the long non dialogue shots between Driver and Irene. So dumb. And that elevator scene... Gaspar Noe had a hand in that. Big fan of this film, still. Also enjoyed Only God Forgives, just as much tbh.

I just watched this movie a few days ago for the first time, its now in my top 10 favourite movies im so happy to see you go over it
If you view Drive as a superhero film, where Driver knows he's a bad guy who is trying to become good, it makes a whole of a lot more sense.
As long as you acknowledge that he actually realizes he's not good, stinging others will always be in his DNA, despite his best efforts.

You just described every western. You just didn't realize it because it's been like 40 years since they were popular. But the driver is the embodiment of a western protagonist.
I liked this. Interesting analysis. First time that I saw "Drive" I really liked how it looked. I recently rewatched it & I fell in love wit the film. I love the atmosphere, it gets under my skin.
It's interesting how there can be some universal themes & elements in films. But there are also these deeply personal feelings that films evoke.
With "Drive" I felt connected to the character because I saw loneliness in him. I also saw his desire to find love. And also to find a way out of the darkness.
Absolutely beautiful film.
And driver is full of humility and selflessness (helping Irene's husband, letting her go in the end, never showing off) what a REAL hero is about

I dig Ryan Gosling's interpretation. The driver sets out to be somebody's hero, just like in all the movies, and succeeds.
Someone I still love very dearly reacted to the film this way: "He had to do it to keep her safe, he had to, he had to do it!"
Honestly one of my favourite films of all time, love hearing the different reasons people love it and the different breakdowns of how it achieved this level of praise cinematically.
I don't know Why, but within the past two nights, I've had the urge to turn on the soundtrack (Mostly for Kavinsky's "Nightcall") and just take a drive around after work at 1 in the morning. I had a few stares from other people when on a busier road, mostly because the windows were down and it was at full volume. But it is a good night time drive soundtrack
If anybody has seen the movie and likes it's soundtrack, I find that it is a buy that was worth it. I'm not really into this kind of music, but damn is the soundtrack good.
My one issue is that the soundtrack makes me want to go on an empty highway and push out 200 Kph. I feel like this soundtrack will get me a ticket from the rare night cop.
Same here, even the other two tracks are good for a night drive that being Real Hero and Under your Spell

My favorite movie of all time since it came out. Soundtrack has a lot to do with it...

Ever since seeing this film in theaters back in 2011, it has become one of my all-time favorites over the years. I'm so happy you did a video for this one. It's an analysis that really does the film justice.
Love the video! But I have to point out (years after this has been posted, I know) that Driver in Sallis' novel did not have an ex- wife, it was Standard (Oscar Isaac in the film) that lived with his ex- wife "Irina" (Irene in the film) because he wanted to be close to his son! Other than that, thank you, this has helped me with my assignment :)
The book is well worth a read. Love the film too.

Here are my additional points of analysis along with this. Feel free to discuss as I would enjoy hearing others viewpoints on these.
Elevator scene: it wasn't imaginary. it actually happened. The driver would have had time to kiss Irene since the assassin already had shown that he desired to kill the driver as inconspicuously as possible otherwise he would have shot both of them as soon as he had seen them upstairs. If the assassin gets caught then his affiliation could be traced back to Nino and Bernie. Nino and bernie later had shown that they want to tie up all loose ends because the money that Nino tried to scam belonged to the other crime family. The driver was positioned behind the assassin so the assassin would not have been able to see the driver see the gun. The driver took this moment to kiss her as he knew that this would be the first and last moment to show Irene how he truly felt with a single passionate kiss. At least to our knowledge he had not yet kissed her. The dim light was an artistic flare to show, in that moment, that Irene was the only thing that mattered to the driver. Then the personal moment was over, the lights lifted, and then the drivers rage consumed him thinking about how anybody could ever come close to harming Irene and benecio. He was blood drunk with rage because of how much he cared for her. He was potentially also sending a message back to bernie and nino since bernie seemed to keep tabs on his crime family deaths since Bernie learned of Ninos death relatively quickly.
The jacket(scorpion) was a literal and metaphorical symbol representing the core struggle and theme of the movie. Is he the frog? Is he the scorpion? Is he both? Is his struggle his attempt to become neither? both the scorpion and the frog represent characters complicit with crime. Regardless of how innocent the frog feels he is or how harmless the crime the scorpion feels he is performing; it is that they are both characters choosing to exist in the world of crime i.e. the river which "drowns" its victims if you don't avoid it all together.
If you want to go further into the jackets meaning. The jacket was shiny (knight/hero in shining armor) and white representing purity. Covering himself in a cloak of attempted purity even though the white of the jacket could be seen as the frog portion of the fable. No matter how much he tries to justify his actions he is still complicit with all the criminals he interacts with. The white of the jacket is also lined on all sides with brown material. Representing a rough around the edges approach to things. He is imperfect no matter how badly he wishes for a better life. The white jacket also becomes more and more dirty throughout the movie becoming covered in the literal effects of his criminal life. Dirt and blood. Friend and foe. Same as the brown gloves.
He also had shown that he did not fear retribution in assisting with these crimes as he did not wear a mask to hide his identity even when the other criminals did. You could see this as him just not caring or that he never felt that his involvement justified wearing a mask because again "he's just a frog". He really didn't seem to care about much of anything prior to meeting Irene. He was a drifter and a criminal. He did however wish to wear a mask to potentially hide his identity when going to to kill Nino.
Also: on him walking up to the glass door at the pizzeria. Another thing I never hear mentioned is the fact that from the parking lot you really can't see inside too well. He may have been walking up there to kill them in the restaurant which is why he walked so close to the door to look inside the whole restaurant.
There is also the fact that he more than likely drowned Nino in the ocean (river) just like the scorpion to the frog. Up until that point Nino was the most "scorpion" of the characters. Nino wanted everybody killed because it was in his nature. Bernie even tells Nino that Nino got them all into a big mess and they agree that it could have been avoided but it's in Ninos nature to escalate things. It was also nino that started this whole thing off thinking that he could get away with stealing $1 million from the other family
I absolutely love this movie... The visuals, the cinematography is, in my opinion, everything a movie should be.... I love the long shots and how they force you to truly take in a scene, I love how you can tell Refn really wanted to frame each character in the scene..... And that opening chase scene... It's seriously the best chase scene I've ever seen in a movie because it was so realistic and legitimate, as in someone really could have used that strategy and those tactics to have escaped the police.... No one jumped over a draw bridge or any ridiculous stuff like that.
When this came out, i was a complete waste of life. It came along and picked me up again. Always love drive. ✔

Saw this movie in theaters when it first came out. Loved it. Went home and bought the soundtrack. Bought the Blu-ray when it was released. The Alamo Drafthouse near me had a showing last month. Of course I went. In short, I love this movie.

The Movie is ICONIC! I saw that movie twice for now... and i will never forget it. This is what i call a REAL movie... My heart was broken, emotions level blown away, so sad and the end and yet - happy at the same time... Camera action and long shots are just breathtakeing... and that wonder full, unforgetable music... I will watch this movie again for sure... not only once more for sure too... :)

I loved this film! It can also be taken as a different telling of The Scorpion and the Frog story, meaning a scorpion will always be a scorpion by nature, the scorpion being Driver.
I thought driver was the frog... he literally carries the scorpion on his back, and serves as a carrier for criminals; that life comes to sting him, as is in its nature. But it’s a version where the frog ultimately overcomes the possibility of drowning, and stabs the scorpion back; he is able to walk away from the stream into a new life, as a “real human bean” :)

Also during the beach/nino scene with the assumption that the driver is the frog and nino being the criminal scorpion. With this we can see a contrarian viewpoint that the frog also has the option to chose and drown the scorpion before the scorpion has a chance to sting the frog. Then the frog has the chance to swim away and even get out of the river. At the end of the day all the criminals (driver included) are sharks and it's not just simply different shades of complicit gray in the crime world. All the criminals in the movie commit horrific acts and therefore can be seen as sharks. All looking for there own piece/bite of the pie in whichever way they see fit. Whether it's money or the girl they all kill to keep whats theirs.

That scene in the hotel when they start shooting through the windows and walls is one of my favorite scenes ever. I was kind of tired and almost asleep while watching it and it totally surprised me and kept me awake for the rest of the movie.

I’ve watched Drive like 10 times now this past month or so and I’m still confused why what’s-his-face kills the guy in the diner after talking to Nino. If someone could explain I’d appreciate it. But also, Ryan Gosling’s description of driver is literally just me
They're eliminating everyone who can connect Nino to the botched robbery. That's the conversation they have before Bernie kills Cook.
I loved the use of 'A Real Hero' in the film. That pounding baseline underlying the etherial melody and vocals mirror the internal struggle within the Driver. Initially used as the background to a sweet love montage (because of course the emotionally stunted driver can only feel through the medium of cheesy dream pop) by the end becomes a lullaby to him from either Irene or himself (and repeated ad infinitum to increasingly desperate effect) that he is not just a violent monster but a real human being.
Even the other two songs fit this movie so well that being nightcall and under your spell

What you said about the mask reminded me of something.
When driver watches the TV with Benicio, he asks "he is the villain ?", the kid says "yes" and driver then asks how he knows, and after a few sentences, the kid says "Just look at him". So maybe the mask was aknowledging the fact that he is, at least for that moment, the villain, or not the good guy.
Because, as you pointed it out, driver, without the mask, is a timid young man, kind of a golden boy, the one you wouldn't imagine cold murdering.
And I think a lot of the interactions between the kid and driver tell many things, or refer to things, about driver's personality and overall story (for instance the "you blinked")
In conclusion, I don't know why I'm typing that while the video is 2 years old lol. No one's gonna read that comment
