I know many of you think that the Driver is literally you, but actually he's literally me. You're all the extras in the background, I'm the one who carries a hammer around to murder people.
Just yesterday my friend came up to me and asked me if something was wrong. He noticed that I seemed different recently. Of course something changed, I just watched another Ryan Gosling movie. Thank you to Ryan Gosling because without him I wouldn't have a personality.
Always felt Ryan Gosling felt the same in all his movies. Like he is so 'Ryan Gosling' that for me(personally, personal opinion) he doesn't seem to be any other character. If I may be bold, 2 dimensional.
So basically the only personality you want is the one the internet tells you to have, meaning you are just like the rest of society, and not different in any way
i dont get it? so if a fan of the film likes the jacket and decides to wear it cause hes a fan of the film, he is weird and shouldnt be wearing the jacket?
I got a fucking Mustang because of this movie. No jacket or anything cause I’m not complete autist, but I did get a silver 14 mustang and drive around late at night because Gosling is literally me.
The influences go even further back. It's basically the same story as Shane. A mysterious cowboy with a dark past befriends a family and reluctantly fights a criminal boss to protect them, but after the bloodshed knows he can't live with them, so he rides off into the sunset while still bleeding.
Theres one I read back on 4chan in which a guy actually got a gf by pretending to be the driver. He did this for a long time and basically became Ryan goslings character. Then one night they were looking for movies to watch and she put on Drive
This seems to happen every time a ‘cool’ character gains attention. Tommy Shelby is a good example for recently. Whole wave of haircuts, fashion and people who try to emulate Tommy’s non-reactive demeanour. It’s an interesting psychological effect, like we are so boring in our real lives we pretend to be someone else.
It’s funny because I used to do Thomas Shelby haircut before Peaky Blinders existed. Now I don’t want to wear it again by fear to appear as a PNJ wanting to emulate the character demeanor lol
@@bully33 I get the dilemma but honestly I’d say look how you want. If it’s not hurting anyone and it looks good on you, do it. Great video man. Drive is an excellent movie. I like how you talked about the other films that inspired Drive. Not many people do that when talking about Drive, it was really cool to hear about them.
I wanted to do something other than talking about the scorpion and the frog, which has been done a million times. I guess this video is more about getting people to explore the films that influenced Drive, as they will probably also like them, and knowing where Drive comes from definitely deepens the appreciation for the movie.

Well done vid as usual! Drive is sure to be a modern classic. Michael Mann's 1981 film 'Thief' was a big influence on Drive too. Would be interesting to see you tackle his filmography.
Michael Mann's Thief is also clearly an inspiration. Synth soundtrack by tangerine dream, very similar intros, parallel plot structures, focus on night-time, and very similar endings. I would say Thief is probably going to come back into popularity as a "literally me" film, because it deals less with alienation (although that is still a theme), and more with class differences and the criminal as blue collar worker vs crime boss as exploitative capitalist who views himself as caring patriarch, which I would say is a smaller theme in drive as well.
That story at the end man ;-; Anyways, good video! I haven't watched this movie yet but with the appreciation you've shown it, I think I'll get around to watching it. Hope your content gets more noticed real soon!
What are the chances that I acted like the character in drive in 5th grade in 2010 without ever seeing the movie. The end just flashed memories of how I used to act like that with the pauses and knowing I wasn't him.

0:25 The year in which Drive takes place is either 2010 or 2011. The theatrical and the DVD release included different radio snippets of the basketball game during the opening, but they both explicitly mention Blake Griffin being on the Clippers. Griffin missed most of his 2009/2010 rookie season, then rose to stardom in his second year, so it's a safe assumption that Drive is set around this time.

I think Nick Mullen had one of the most insightful takes on Drive I've heard, where he said that basically Drive is showing that anyone who could actually be an action star would have to be a psychopath. If you take away the witty dialogue, wisecracks, and one liners, anyone who could actually commit the violence that action stars casually commit on a regular basis would have to be a very fucked up individual. I do love that the Driver has to pay a price for the violence he inflicts though, sort of an inversion of the classic trope of the hero getting what he wants from violence. Every time I see an action hero slaughter people indiscriminately and then afterwards kiss the girl and live happily ever after, it kinda breaks the suspension of disbelief. I think Hemingway said it best in "For Whom the Bell Tolls" after Robert Jordan kills a scout, and when Maria runs up and tries to kiss him, he says something along the lines of "One does not love and do that (killing someone) at the same time". That is the realistic depiction of violence that I like to see, and I think Drive manages to get closer than most movies I've seen, which is why it's still my favorite movie after all this time.

9:04 What is this "person obsessed with fictional character and wants to be like them despite the impracticality" effect? I've seen it so often, it has to have an official name.
Yeah it's a common trope, for sure. We've seen that with V, Joker, The Matrix, and tons of westerns back in the day. It'd be an interesting video topic because I don't think there is a singular term for it but I'm interested in why it happens.
Found it. "Kinning": a term used to describe the acting/believing of oneself as a fictional character, typically done by persons with self image issues or insecurities. Most commonly done with characters from fantasy who wouldn't fit in real life very well. Apparently it's a big thing on Tumblr.
hahahah great analysis. i like you. subscribed. i've seen several film essays on Drive but you're the first to bring up 78's "The Driver." didn't even know that existed... consider me educated.

I watch and have always watched a lot of films. Drive was the first film that I felt could only have been made in the 21st Century. I found it to be an authentic post modernist fairytale, and absolutely terrifying.

@@itstiny. I imagine it is lol
hahahah great analysis. i like you. subscribed. i've seen several film essays on Drive but you're the first to bring up 78's "The Driver." didn't even know that existed... consider me educated.
And what's funny is that, a little film called "Taxi Driver" by Martin Scorsese is also inspired by Le Samourai.
Never heard of it
@@thrashnakthebarbarian9876 😆
so the driver thinks he's literally them? just like I think he's literally me? dude that's so literally me.
I dont remember subbing to this channel but I'm happy I did.
I learned that he is a real human being. And a real hero.
"Baby Driver" is an other Film in the Timeline of of of goodguy drivers that fight the Mafia for a Girl
5:45 soo even Driver himself is a „thats literally me” kind of guy
Another brilliant essay, keep up the great work my man
Thank you Whang for introducing me to this awesome channel!
5:35 Lol. That quote is very smart and revealing.
Many of the lonely not very social guys who connect with Driver probably also think that their life is like a movie in some ways.

".............Its just the right class for me"
"..........I read a lot."
".................yeah."
100% I'll use that line.
This film exists as if it doesn’t exist
It’s that surreal. The first time I watched it, I had to keep reminding myself I’m watching a real movie cause it was that extreme and over the top
It’s one of the best feelings I’ve ever experienced while watching a movie. It doesn’t happen often but when it does, you know you found a good movie
I’m literally Ryan Gosling (I drive)
Dude, seriously can’t believe you don’t have more subscribers
Nice little MDE clip at 5:22
I watch and have always watched a lot of films. Drive was the first film that I felt could only have been made in the 21st Century. I found it to be an authentic post modernist fairytale, and absolutely terrifying.
That one part where you read the 4chan experiences, one of them i can painfully relate too and that's the one where the kid is asked by the professor why he's taking the class? I took an elective course when I was going to school full time and I said something embarrassingly similar to that poor kid
Ryan Gosling Driver is litterally me. I took a ryan gosling character test and it turns out I am ryan gosling drive.
i like how in the two testimonials read by turkey tom neither of them have a car
Okay... but I was using toothpicks even before seeing this movie.
Literally me.
You know I'm something of a human bean myself
This guy just inflated my ego by saying if you watch video essays you’ve probably seen Drive 💅
I cannot watch this. I fear it will affect my ability to be literally him
This was pretty great, props.
i dont know man, sometimes i just wanna be a real human being... and a real hero....
He’s literally me.
Excellent video Kino. Somehow I've only managed to see drive once. Loved it when I was ~14 but never went back. I will now though. Keep killing it 💞
What’s the song that starts at around 00:14
Lights out by snowdablizard
The funny part is that the only “neon” thing about drive is the font at the into and the 3 songs of the soundtrack💀
A real human bean.
