Hey guys, so I’d just like to say sorry my voice sounds a little weird in this video. Essentially the reason why is I have been struggling with Tinnitus for the past 6 months. For those of you who dont know it is best described as a constant ringing that is in the victim’s ear that never goes away. Whenever you’ve been to a loud nightclub or a music festival you will probably experience a ringing in your ears that goes away within a few hours. What I have is that except the ringing is much louder and it never quiets down. It is constant. It may sound like it’s not that bad but really it is unbearable sometimes. I hear it all day every day and it is at the point now where it is making me depressed and is severely limiting my productivity. Nights are the worst. You never truly appreciate something until it is gone and something as simple as silence is something everyone takes for granted. The ability to go to bed or somewhere quiet and hear nothing is something that I have not had for half a year. The silence is deafening. Right now I’m taking a course of drugs that are supposed to reduce the fluids in my ear as the doctor thinks that is the cause, the ringing is ever so slightly less noisy but still unbearable at times such as right now when I’m writing this. For those of you who dont know the ears, mouth and nose are all linked together so me taking these drugs to reduce fluids in my ears is also causing the way my nose works to shift so when I speak I sound slightly different. Not going to lie it feels pretty shit and I am 90% certain I will have this ringing and warbling in my ears for the rest of my life. But anyway don't forget to like and subscribe XD
I can imagine how terrible it is, and since imagining is usually not as bad as the real thing, I can only expect what you're going through to be a 5x as worse as what I imagine XD I'll pray that you'll find some sort of treatment that will help lessen your condition significantly, and make it a bit more tolerable to live with. Hold on there.
You neglected to mention what is to me THE most terrifying aspect of that first shot of Hannibal standing in the middle of his cell: the camera is showing Clarice's first-person perspective and as Hannibal comes into view he's already staring _right into it._ But he obviously doesn't just spend all day standing still in the middle of his cell. He knew she was coming. He was _waiting for her._
Anthony Hopkin's girlfriend saw the movie when it came out and she was so terrified of his face she dumped him almost overnight... Plus, when the movie had its premier Hopkins would creep up to people's seats and say in a sudden, calm voice "how are you liking the film?" and scare everyone senseless. This guy is fricken awesome. great vid btw
Something that the video doesn't mention is that while yes, when you first see hannibal lecter standing there in his cell, he's not showing any signs of insanity, to me he is terrifying anyway because he seems so... artificial. Yes he's not showing any signs of insanity but he's not normal because a normal person would just looking bored, lying on the bed, maybe reading...? However, he's just standing in the middle of his cell, unmoving, with a perfect posture. Its almost like he's TRYING to appear normal but just comes off creepy because its not actually normal in the slightest. However, he's a psychologist so it has to be intentional. The best way I can describe it is that it is like he knew she was coming and decided to do the creepiest thing he could think of, which was in fact, nothing, like an absence of any sort of traits so she couldn't read him. And that is terrifying because you have NO idea what to expect.
To me it looked too predictable. He heard her coming and therefore took that position to assert dominance. The reason he 'appears' terrifying is the incompetence of the FBI Agent who should be trained in interrogations and the fact that while she clearly was incompetent had no one with knowledge with her
Totally agree with this analysis. It's like he's attempting to look and act like a "normal agreeable" person which comes off really forced and artificial. Everything he is showing is just what he wants you to see, everything in his cell is in his control and the way he wants it to look to give the impression he is intelligent and artistic, which demands respect, controls potential conversation topics and ultimately disguises and distracts from who he really is, an insane murderer who eats people.

Something that adds to the affect is when Clarice first meets Hannibal, his eyes are in the shadows. The rest of him is bright and normal but you can’t see the eyes. It’s a “I might look normal but I have a terrible secret” feel.
Yea there was the sense that "something's not right". Everything points to him being a psychopath yet in that moment, it challenges the audience to compare what they've been told with reality, but now that doesn't tell you everything either. Even seeing Hannibal Lecture, up and down, it's in the eyes. Eyes are so compelling.
Clarice's muscle twitching on neck and peripheral areas of her face show she's extremely nervous... before she even meets Hannibal. The emotional communication Hopkins and Foster convey is magnificent.
The emphasis on "closer" even as a child I knew what he was trying to do and it absolutely thrilled me. Hopkins makes you feel like he's crawling under your skin with one word.
"I'm having an old friend for dinner" is one of the truly great closing lines in cinematic history. And I ought to know because I have watched over a dozen movies in my lifetime.
Thing about Lecter is he is creepy as hell yet charming all the same. He’s the villain but you cheer for him and want him to win you know you’ve done something right when you make a character like this, it’s an excellent psychotic victory
That’s because we subconsciously compare him to Crawford. Lector respects Clarice and acts more like a mentor to her. He’s demented yes. But he’s brilliant and he’s straight with her. He quid pro quos with her but gives her a choice about it. He’s up front. Meanwhile Crawford is using her left and right however and whenever it suits him best in the moment. He does that thing at the funeral home where he aligns himself with the small town police and makes her the outcast little lady that it’s not decent to talk in front of. The ends justify the means with Crawford. By contrast, Lector invests in her and it’s even more evident in the book that he sees her potential and works with her to deepen her understanding of abnormal psychology. Goes much further in the book with that dynamic. He actually helps her to move toward her goal. When Hannibal finds out about the “deal” for his help being a lie, I remember feeling sorry for him! That’s one hell of a trick to pull off as an author and whoever wrote the adaptation nailed it too. Yeah I’m still trying to look under the hood of this story to figure out how Lector was made to be such a sympathetic villain- even after he has killed people on screen. Some of it probably has to do with the excellent casting of Anthony Hopkins - but not all of it.
That's a pretty bad way of looking at it. It's a chicken and egg situation. Certainly without Thomas Harris this video wouldn't be made either. It takes two to tango. The constant Hollywood-esque reinforcement of actors are everything and writers are redundant is nauseating
The reason why your viewer retention rate is so high is because you’re smart and concise and explain topics that us as the audience actually care about. We get educated in a 10-20 minute video very successfully. Thank you.
Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins never interacted between scenes. She only really saw him when he was locked in his cell on set. Made these interactions super real. Incredible performances from both actors.
im gonna be totally honest, Mads Mikkelsen (sorry if i spelled that wrong) is a spectacular Hannibal, and oftentimes makes me forget just how terrifying Hannibal actually is from time to time
@@bodebaggins look dude, there a lot of crappy old horror movies. most movies in the genre in general are not good. besides there are modern movies i can point to as well as being really good as an example of current horror movies being high quality compared to other eras. it's so easy to build a strawman saying a past era was better than the current era when you compare the best of the past to the worst of the present. let the right one in, hereditary, lake mungo, the lighthouse, under the skin, the clovehitch killer, all really good modern horror movies that don't rely on jumpscares. if you can't find any modern horror movies that are good then you're not looking hard enough.
Can we just take a second to enjoy the brilliance of Hopkins in his prime? The subtle expressions, even the breaking of eye contact with a blink then he looks at the floor and back to Clarice. Dude won an Oscar with only 24 minutes of screen time
While I don't fully disagree with your statement "if you want your audience to feel terrified, it has all to do with which character has the power" I think it only tells half of the story. It may sound like nitpicking but I'd say it's just as important, if not more important, to emphasize where the LACK of power is if you really want to terrify your audience. I hadn't ever really thought much about the idea of terror until you made that statement, but once I heard it I realized that terror is feeling an overwhelming sense of powerlessness in the face of a malicious presence. If you want your audience to feel terror then you want your audience to be focused on the terrorized's powerlessness more-so than you want them to be focused on the terrorizer's power. Either way though, I think this was a great video and it really got me thinking, keep up the great work!
Honestly, I think the scariest scene in almost all of film is the scene, (SPOILERS) Is when Buffalo Bill is looking at her in the dark and she has no idea what he is doing. He doesn’t do anything to her. He just looks.
I waited on Anthony Hopkins in Park City, Utah at a ski resort where I was working back in 2007. What a genius actor. I was starstruck but kept it to myself. I couldn't think of anything to say that he hadn't heard a thousand times, so I just was as normal as I could muster.
Something else that makes Lecter so terrifying is that he is unusually restrained and refined for what he is rumored to be, throwing the audience off guard; yet his monstrosity isn't fully hidden(or Clarice might've slacked soon after)- you can somehow feel the ominpresent terror that has yet to erupt out of him, gripping you in perpetual fear as his mysterious demeanor continues to reveal itself. Also he is very unpredictable in the way he treats others- one moment cordial and even jovial, then suddenly becomes hostile and menacing. That further bolsters his power over others as they are kept off-kilter in his presence.
MineTurtle Animations Keep in mind that stuff on screen doesn't translate quite so well onto paper. Shots and sound don't exist, only actions, dialogue, and descriptions.
I went to see it in the cinema when it came out, and I still remember what it felt like when she was walking along past the cells and thinking - what the hell is going to be in the cell at the end, but then there's just this guy standing there. It was more terrifying than if he'd been acting crazy.
Jodie's acting in the intro shot is also great, after seeing the three previous inmates degenerating behavior she starts craning her neck to try and see Hannibal, as if she can't wait to see how much worse he is. Both her character and the audience get thrown slightly off balance to find him already looking at us before he could have seen around the corner. It's excellent, excellent acting, combined with excellent cinematography.
@Cheryl Dawn Stevens emoji movie is scary cause someone from a mental asylum thought it was a good idea, than some executive producers said " That lego movie did very well, let's do that that but with emojis!" They put real money into it, they got some talentless unfunny comedians, than they made a movie that got an 6% on rotten tomatoes.
i’m so glad someone has shown appreciation for his character, i am so in love with this villain. he is such a beautifully terrifying character and anthony hopkins did such an amazing job portraying him ! it’s incredible, this whole film series is one of (if not) my all time favourites
This is funny because in my university there is one lecturer who is known for his cruelty, harshness and in general for his horrific nature. And we all heard the stories about him until we actually saw him. And, what a coincidence, he totally looks like Hannibal Lecter.
Hard to be truly scared when you see him killing those who "had it coming" and those who only get in his way. A truly frightening villain victimizes the innocent, it scares you into thinking you can be next.
I WISH YOU COVER THE HANNIBAL SERIES. IT HAS SO MUCH TO OFFER ON PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR. THERE IS SO MUCH MEAT THERE. THERES ALSO A LOT OF POWER IN THE CINEMATOGRAPHY
That series truly The Liver. If Hannibal Lecter had been Scottish and invited to a dinner, what would he ask the host? Kidney? Translation: Kid is it not? Could you give me a hand? ...
On the part about "Alien" vs "Aliens," I agree, but I also feel that when you build up a character to be strong and convince the audience of their safety, and then rip all of that safety away by having the villain completely clobber the protagonist, that can also spark a certain kind of horror that feels different and new.
Isn’t it strange that one of the most terrifying movie villains is one of the most beloved, iconic characters of all time. I remember watching a video explaining why people are attracted to Hannibal. He has such a strong, magnetic aura that we can’t help but watch. He seems untouchable and that’s what people find appealing. Figuratively, because of his intelligence, sophistication and his ability to manipulate practically everyone. Physically, by the glass separating him and the audience.
Great analysis. I’d say that’s what makes the famous Japanese film Ju-on so terrifying. In most horror movies, there is some form of safe space. Many horror movies are set up so that bad things only happen at night or when the character is alone, etc., and usually the main characters are safe during the day when they’re out in public. We also associate hiding under the covers with safety. But Ju-on tells us that the malicious spirit has all the power and that there IS no safe space. You can be with 20 other people in broad daylight and the spirit will still come for you. At one point in the film, a girl hides under her covers and the ghost climes in and kills her in her bed where she thought she was safe. It’s also what makes Pan’s Labyrinth so interesting. Even though the movie seems like it would be focused on the fantasy aspects of Ofelia’s quest, instead it’s primarily focused on the captain and him imposing his will onto others.

I’ve come to find Hannibal as a comfort character rather than scary. I do want more of these kinds of characters! They are often terrifying at first! But when one warms up to them, they are just human. It adds to the character.
Hannibal is not the villain in Silence of the Lambs. Bill is. The audience is opposed to Bill, not Hannibal. Hannibal is helping to catch Bill. He's just also trying to help himself.
With respect, let us name the people deserving of your praise on Silence of The Lambs: director Jonathon Demme (RIP) and director of cinematography Tak Fujimoto. Both, I might add, cut their teeth on Roger Corman productions in the 1970s, two of many later mega talents. So remember that the next time you hear some know-nothing diss Corman's life's work.
It‘s the same reason, why playing Subnautica is so terrifying, despite it making no efforts to be a horror game. You are thrown into a vast ocean with barely anything to defend yourself. You’re basically powerless. On the other hand it is swarming with potentially dangerous and partially ginormous creatures. They have all the power. All you can do is, evade them.
The way he stares @3:07, I remember originally thinking when I saw this movie that I couldn't place any type of emotion that I've seen or felt before to that face he makes in that split second, but then I realized it's more of like an empty type of stare, but not completely; it's empty in a sense of what I imagine it's like for a human to stare at the guts of a smashed bug, like no emotion, because no one ever feels bad about smashing the bug.. just wonder and Interest, and yet, then again, not so empty because in his case, he sees it all and already has the person figured out. He sees everything about you in that quick, stare that bypasses all privacy and personal space, like as if he can see you completely naked and even deeper for who you are.
I watched this movie when I was seven and was terrified. It's definitely a scary film but I suppose it depends on your experience and personality. It's a good movie, anyway.
Maybe not scary in the traditional sense of the word, but do you believe the idea is disturbing? Just because it didn't scare you doesn't mean that the movie isn't "scary."
An audience is a cruel cold heartedly truthful people. So when the audience tells you your channel is awesome, you can guarantee yourself that you are awesome.
That was an excellent Essay, I do wonder if you've seen Hannibal TV? If you have what are your thoughts on it? Would be great if you could make an essay on said TV series, the amount of metaphors and subjects to analyse is insane.

Everything points to him being a psychopath yet in that moment, it challenges the audience to compare what they've been told with reality, but now that doesn't tell you everything either. Even seeing Hannibal Lecture, up and down, it's in the eyes.
Eyes are so compelling.
Watched this film for the first time yesterday, at my local cinema.
How did I even miss this gem?
Wow. 😮
Lost count the amount of times I've seen it.
Did you look at people a little different after the film? Did you check the locks and alarms before going to bed a little more cognitively?
I have it on DVD and haven't watched it for ages. I'll probably watch again this before the end of this week.
cinema?
Clarice's muscle twitching on neck and peripheral areas of her face show she's extremely nervous... before she even meets Hannibal. The emotional communication Hopkins and Foster convey is magnificent.
The emphasis on "closer" even as a child I knew what he was trying to do and it absolutely thrilled me. Hopkins makes you feel like he's crawling under your skin with one word.

"I'm having an old friend for dinner" is one of the truly great closing lines in cinematic history. And I ought to know because I have watched over a dozen movies in my lifetime.
cjpreach You’ve only seen 12 movies?
@@oliviail At least. Maybe more. Hehehe
Wow, that's a lot. I lost count at ten on account of that's how many fingers I gots
I think I might have seen at least 100 movies, if not more. I also watched at least 10 or more shows.
Actually, multiple hundreds.
Thing about Lecter is he is creepy as hell yet charming all the same. He’s the villain but you cheer for him and want him to win you know you’ve done something right when you make a character like this, it’s an excellent psychotic victory
Dr. Lecter is a contradiction who is both a doctor, psychologist who is a delusion of himself as a maniac murderer.

Let's not act like the writer or director made this character, without Anthony Hopkins we wouldn't be making this video.
Brian Cox was just as good
Can you imagine Nick Cage doing it?
@@count7340 Why not? He would be great I think in that role
That's a pretty bad way of looking at it. It's a chicken and egg situation. Certainly without Thomas Harris this video wouldn't be made either. It takes two to tango.
The constant Hollywood-esque reinforcement of actors are everything and writers are redundant is nauseating

he’s charming asf, but at the same time he’s absolutely terrifying
Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins never interacted between scenes. She only really saw him when he was locked in his cell on set. Made these interactions super real. Incredible performances from both actors.
im gonna be totally honest, Mads Mikkelsen (sorry if i spelled that wrong) is a spectacular Hannibal, and oftentimes makes me forget just how terrifying Hannibal actually is from time to time
Such a great series, hopefully Netflix does something more with it bc it was supposed to be 6 seasons originally
My psychology teacher was particularly fond of this character.

That slicked back hair that makes us focus entirely on his face. And the way that smile/smirk plays under the piercing eyes.
Terrifying.
When I start watching a video and like it, I _always_ watch to the end.
Honestly, I think the scariest scene in almost all of film is the scene, (SPOILERS)
Is when Buffalo Bill is looking at her in the dark and she has no idea what he is doing. He doesn’t do anything to her. He just looks.

5:03. I love how you say “all” with your accent.
that's just the way that everyone who is English speaks...
I love your videos, I’m thinking about writing stories using your advice. Thank you so much!

MineTurtle Animations Same here this channel gives such fantastic advice!
MineTurtle Animations dont.
Hannibal from the very get go seems far too composed and relaxed in his environment ...and that alone is incredibly unsettling .

This is funny because in my university there is one lecturer who is known for his cruelty, harshness and in general for his horrific nature. And we all heard the stories about him until we actually saw him. And, what a coincidence, he totally looks like Hannibal Lecter.

On the part about "Alien" vs "Aliens," I agree, but I also feel that when you build up a character to be strong and convince the audience of their safety, and then rip all of that safety away by having the villain completely clobber the protagonist, that can also spark a certain kind of horror that feels different and new.
This isn't as much terror as it is suspense.
It's a kind of psychological terror.
good for you man i hope you do well on youtube your content is creative, unique and interesting
I noticed that at the very end of Silence of the Lambs, Clarice’s face takes up the whole screen when she is becoming an agent
2:30 "The devil is at his most powerful when the devil is a gentleman."
All it took Anthony Hopkins's eyes to make scary for the audience.

I’ve come to find Hannibal as a comfort character rather than scary. I do want more of these kinds of characters! They are often terrifying at first! But when one warms up to them, they are just human. It adds to the character.
Yeah a human... Who eats people lol

"The future is looking very bright."
Cuts to scene of Dr. Chilton getting off the plane for a holiday. brilliant editing.
Henry from IT will forever be the scariest person ever
how?
Hannibal is not the villain in Silence of the Lambs. Bill is. The audience is opposed to Bill, not Hannibal. Hannibal is helping to catch Bill. He's just also trying to help himself.
With respect, let us name the people deserving of your praise on Silence of The Lambs: director Jonathon Demme (RIP) and director of cinematography Tak Fujimoto. Both, I might add, cut their teeth on Roger Corman productions in the 1970s, two of many later mega talents. So remember that the next time you hear some know-nothing diss Corman's life's work.
I want to have a beer with Hannibal and Patrick Bateman but I have to return some video tapes first
I'd rather share a chianti with Dr. Lecter.
I usually never skip a RUclips video. I find creators I like and watch all of it.

He was my absolute favourite character in the movie!
How does he bring out so much about something that seems so little. He just wrote an entire essay about one scen in a movie. AMAZING!

Lol it's funny you mention viewer retention, and I actually sat through the entire video. Amazing content.
dragging the mouse over the thumbnail was a scary freaking illusional transition on its own!
He sees everything about you in that quick, stare that bypasses all privacy and personal space, like as if he can see you completely naked and even deeper for who you are.
take a shot everytime he says 'power'

I watched this movie when I was seven and was terrified. It's definitely a scary film but I suppose it depends on your experience and personality. It's a good movie, anyway.
Maybe not scary in the traditional sense of the word, but do you believe the idea is disturbing? Just because it didn't scare you doesn't mean that the movie isn't "scary."
Schmib Kat wow at parts I was scared the scenes that try to scare you but overall I found it educational about killers, victims, and police forces.

Shouldn't it be inversely proportional since he's talking about the negative space around the character? I am confused.
Great vid though.
I thought this. Or more simply, the space taken up by their face is proportional to the power they hold in the scene.
An audience is a cruel cold heartedly truthful people. So when the audience tells you your channel is awesome, you can guarantee yourself that you are awesome.
