  • After baltic supra had some trouble with the transmission, we brought it over to Jason Gatlin and his crew at Automatic Transmission Factory (ATFspeed.com) to tear it down and see what went wrong. After the tear down it got the full ATF treatment which included dyno testing the valve body and transmission at the ATF facility. After the new transmission baltic supra set his personal best at the track 9.93@143.

    This was really cool. I think its pretty awesome how he showed each part that failed from a competitors build on the transmission. Wasn't this a Titan transmission?

      Dennison Seeto or just go a431e with shift lock...I've had mine in my aristo for 4 years no trans cooler no issues

    Would a cheap but good mod as a preventative measure be to just replace the accumulator piston with atf's one, some of us are not made of money and cant afford complete rebuilds. Would replacing the piston alone be worthwhile?

      If you're trying to keep the car on the road, I'd recommend just saving up and getting it all done at once. Knowing that you'll have a practically bulletproof transmission that will handle just about anything and be reliable doing it, is worth the money.

    Can the A340E auto that comes with the non-turbo be built just as strong as the Aristo/TT ones? And can it be built for paddle-shifting hard (possible because of the manual valve body)?

    I have a mild 454 in my 88 pick up and I killed a summit brand 350 th trans do you think ur stage 2 350th is a better trans for me or should I just go with a 400 th and do they have were u can hook up a kick down cable

      I realize this is an old post, but for anyone interested. I would go to a 4-speed auto or a 400 turbo with a gear vendor overdrive, especially if you intend to keep the vehicle. At the sametime, a 350 turbo with a few pressure mods, better clutches, bands, convertor, large cooler is more than capable of handling a 454 BB.A race 350 turbo can handle a 1000 hp plus, but its only advantage is for spec racing, size, weight constraints or where it might be required. Its lighter, eats up less horsepower, has less internal mass,, can shift faster, etc Visit online forums, visit drag strips, car shows, talk to people, see what they run for their specific application. You surely don't want a manual valve body, race trans, with an 8-inch lockup converter for stop and go rush hour traffic.

      Sales at ATF Wow, so this was the NON turbo toyota Automatic then? According to Wikipedia the turbo one is the a340e wouldnt that mean doign the same mods to the a340e it would theoretically hold beyond 900hp? I believe the turbo version has more clutch packs.

    You guys should use a th400 or 4L80e,
    you can abuse the shit out of both trans and they will keep going.
    Tom Bailey's 3,143HP camaro with a TH400 lasted drag week and a 500mi road trip with ease.

      Why use something different if you can get the stock one built?
      Pretty sure those TH400's cost over $5k to be able to handle all that power and do so consistently.
      I used to have a Supra with a TH400 and it cost me $3k to get built to handle 1200hp, after finding it in the junkyard for $150

      rotor13 You need to find a new shop or learn how to build one your self.
      My bro had a th400 built for his LSX 427 1981 volvo wagon(over 1,600 RWHP)
      The shop charged him $1,200
      he never had a problem.

      Stephen Bagnell I paid for GeForce to build mine. I still have the transmission, sitting in my garage waiting for my next drag car build. Plus, mine is airshifted. I didn't want just the ability to handle power, I wanted to be able to shift as fast as those newfangled DCT's, and be deadly reliable.
      30k miles as a street car with about 300 drag passes and the only thing I've ever done was replace the torque converter and changed fluids.

      Most customers are looking for transmissions like these because of Overdrive and are not looking to make over 900rwhp.. Now in the case were someone wants a race unit only.. We can build TH400 units in excess of 3500HP..

      You can have a manual valve body in most popular auto transmissions.
      You can either use the shifter, or use one of the several paddle-shift options.
