I've only ever seen three magicians perform live. The first was an old drunk that I assisted with the Miser's Dream in Panto at the Liverpool Empire when I was 5. The second was Guy Hollingworth (doing a show about Erdnase.) The third was the incomparable Gerry Sadowitz.
I picked up the book immediately upon its US release back in 1999, very excited to get my hands on Guy’s handling of Reformation (I had by then acquired a bumbled handling of John Lovick’s infinitely easier Reparation) and, 25 years later, the book is still a treasured favorite, but one from which I’ve gleaned little if any performative value. There is, however, one understated and viciously clever little treasure in the form of a much more traditional signed, torn and restored card routine. I love this book, but these are the effects and routines that make Guy Hollingworth who he is. I think it has more value for others as a jumping off point of how the contained principles can be assimilated into other effects, original to the reader.
I fully agree, the effects are not for everyone but everyone should read this book. I go back to my copy occasionally (more for inspiration than to work out one of the effects). I love the story of what “made” him get into magic in the first place (which kills me that he is so good and creative with his material). His material is something I aspire to be able to perform well. One day maybe 😉. Great review as always.
good review, i have the book and feel about the same way as you do towards it. i love your insights and your take on books, you haven't steered me wrong so far. thanks for the work you put into your vids. much appreciated.
This is a very “classy” review. The book is a treasure, one of the first books I bought from Guy, I am surprised that is still available. The card technique info in this book is quite sophisticated as he is. Happy Easter 🐇
Thank you, Nancy! He has definitely shared part of himself...now the question is if we are capable of anything he has shared 😄 Happy Easter to you and yours as well!
Looking for news about Guy I found your wonderful channel and immediately subscribe, love your style and content. I'll take a look at the older videos but I recommend you René Lavand's work and books if you haven't revised them already. Keep the good work!
Thank you! I'll definitely look into them, but it's rare that I review a very old book unless it's rereleased. However, discussing them on the Discord server...that's a whole different thing. Appreciate the idea!
How long you been doing magic Jeff? Can't you do a video about how to dress for magic show or family reunion ,cause I love wear short in the all summer season.but I like your style. Thanks! You got a subscriber for life:)

I have had this book for almost 3 yrs. but everytime im ready for a new book, i end up picking a different book because i know each magic in this book requires alot of practice, and i do not have as much time for practicing lately.
Hi Jeff, Great review, I can understand some of your reservations when committing on the style and slights that Guy performs from his repertoire. I was lucky to see Guy, early on his journey of performing card magic being U.K based. He had a passion for Victorian clothing from a early age. He has always performed in a tail suit and being from a public school boy background this his what he feels comfortable performing in. But please don’t thing that we all speak the same way has Guy.🤣😂 Although you may not perform any of the material in the way Guy performs, I feel that this book can inspire anyone to think about their style of performance and character building. When this book first came out the buzz was for the reformation and waving the aces, which he performed on the world’s greatest magic show in the USA. I feel that in recent years this book is very much under the radar to newcomers in card magic. A book to read for inspiration and creativity regardless of whether you perform or learn any of his routines.
I agree with your assertions. I definitely believe one can be inspired by his impressive character development, but he stops short of sharing how he came up with it. Perhaps even he doesn't fully know? Regardless, I think the book definitely earns a spot on an Erudite magician's shelf, but perhaps one that could be an infrequent companion. Thanks for sharing your thoughts as an 'insider.' BTW, I have many UK friends, so I'm aware of the wide variety of British accents. 💂😄
Looks like a gorgeous book!Very Victorian, drawing room and British, stylistically.Like you say,it doesn’t look like an easy to learn card book but something to aspire to if you are a beginner and something to enhance your card work if you are more advanced.Lovely looking book though.A very nice stiff upper lip review 🤣 🇬🇧.Thanks.
@@EruditeMagic I spent a few weeks on the tear restore. Started to read more and realized it was too much. Good thing my second book was Royal Road. My Journey started 4 years ago, what a crazy ride. Thanks for your reviews. I can’t wait until next Sunday for an other review.
It was my favorite book of magic when I started. Great book. I have a book suggestion for you about mentalism. "The compleat principia mentalia" by Bob Cassidy currently my favorite mentalism book. You should make a video about that book.
It's included in The Artful Mentalism of Bob Cassidy [1] if I'm not mistaken... Glad you love Guy's book. What made it your favorite when you started? 🤔
@@EruditeMagic "The Oil and water" Routine and "Twisting aces" were best cardtricks I performed to my audience and got great response from my audience back then.
I think I'm capable in reading english (I read principia, Blomberg labs and many more) but for some reasons, this book is very painful to read for me.. I don't know if it's the style, but man do I struggle to find it interesting :/
I assume you mean by John Bannon? The short answer is, I can't, I don't own it. The longer answer is that it's John Bannon, so I'm sure it's worthy of your consideration. If someone wants to send me a copy, I'd be happy to read and review it for you. :D Sorry I can't help more at this time.
Nice review.
Wow, your production value is skyrocketing. Love the way the style of this video matches the style of the book. Nice work!

Wow, that's quite a list (and quite a story!)
It’s a great book ! I have only learnt the very first effect from it,Twisting the Aces ! Which I love, and will be reading from it again soon 👍🏼
Glad you love it - thanks for stopping by: I've been keeping my eye on your channel, and you help keep magic magic books alive! 👏
Worlds are colliding! Thanks for the videos guys. I enjoy them very much.

Such a wonderful book! I love, love, love this book! Definitely not a “beginner” book, but should be in EVERY library.
What makes it a 'must-have' in your mind?
I love that one of the best effects in the book is 'hidden' where many will never see it.
Exactly! Several subsequent authors have taken the same approach - I love it!
