- We have used oil-based polyurethane (floor finish) and we are going to explain why. We have been using oil-based varnish for several years now. It's a tough floor finish. It's also cheaper than water-based finish even though it holds up just as well or even better.
In this video, I will break down the four main reasons we are quitting oil-based finish.
The reasons are:
1. Debris in the finish.
2. High levels of VOCs in the varnish.
3. The odor of the finish.
4. How VOC law is affecting the supply of oil-based polyurethane.

Would you use oil or water-based finish on your floor?
water 100%
Oil based works better imo. It lasts longer and is overall a superior durable top coat for most applications.
Have you ever used Arboritec products? Good or bad?

We gave up using most solvent based finishes in our wood shop around 5 years ago, kicking and screaming the whole time. We have learned that the chemistry in the water borne (not water based) have really been a game changer. They have become just as durable as solvent. Same goes with the 2K epoxy and conversion varnishes.
IMO water base is just the overall better option. Looks nicer, dries faster, doesn’t smell as bad, lower VOC etc etc

Oil based Poly was used on my red oak instsll and is gritty as your examples. Should that be sanded, (or buffed) and repoly'd or just sand the grit?
I`m 55 now and been doing floors for over 30 years , sure solvent takes longer to dry and you might get a bit of grit here and there but water based varnish does not cut it when it comes to performance , 20 years later and it`s` still there , sell people rubbish ( not a good idea )
Yes, exactly. The water-based finish does look as clear to me, either.
I had 3 estimates from hardwood floor companies to sand my floors, 2 of the companies uses my oil based stains but I’m picking the one company that uses water based, although they’re more expensive.
Makes sense. We pay about 2x as much for our water-based finishes.
My parents had their floors refinished 2 years ago but they still smell and really smell under the rugs like the finish was recently applied. Isnt this dangerous and unusual? Should the floors be resealed or recoated?
ive almost thought about buying a big ass air filter for the higher end jobs and those window exhaust fans for the finish coat
We use to use poloplaz for years but the formula has changed. Too many drying issues. What brand of oil do you use?
Why did you finish the floors and the walls are still unpainted?
I Iove water based finish on hardwood flooring, it has a nice look. But if your flooring contractor doesn’t put down four to five coats depending on the wood species your flooring will look like crap in three years

out for years. Don’t do it!
I always felt like a thicker finish past a certain point doesn't equate to a floor that wears any better.

We do waterbase sealer of oil base stain. As long as its dry, it won't give you any problems.

@lumberjackhardwoodsupply I used it twice, I'm a slow learner the last time being 25 years ago. We've been 100% water base for a long long time.
