Floor Desk 1 Year Update + FAQ!

  • It's been a year since I switched my computer setup so I can sit on the floor. Here's a little update about how it's been for me, as well as answers to a few questions I commonly get about it!
    BTW, ignore the big ugly clips on the corners of the desk - I put a piece of clear vinyl fabric on it and that's my temporary method of securing it 😊

    This is great - I started intentionally floor sitting this month and in australia I found a coffee table online from kmart which I am loving and I found that the trick is getting the right height for you with leg room underneath to be able to stretch out and move around freely on floor and not too high a height to be able to work on like you would a desk or dining table
    Since doing this and floor sleeping my form and technique and amount of weight I can lift doing barbell squats at the gym has improved, increased

    I've been sitting on the floor this past year now and it's been so great! I did switch to a laptop when the new macbook air came out and being able to move the laptop around with me to adjust to my position was a game changer. Definitely something to consider!

    OMG when you explained about sitting on your knees as a child reminded me about how my mom taught me to wash the bathroom tub. she would kneel down and bend over the tub and could reach all around the tub to wash it. I could not reach all the tub by kneeling on the floor so I would kneel on the ledge of the tub and then I could reach it all. I did that till I was a teenager. I have been sitting on the floor working from home at a coffee table. It is most comfortable to me for all the reasons you mentioned. I came searching for a floor chair situation as I always destroy throw pillows I have been using. This video is extremely helpful.

    Thank you! Great video. I’m changing up my bedroom space and just got a shikibuton. My bed hasn’t been treating me very well for a while now. So, I’ve been wanting to get down in the floor more for everything else as well. Lots of wonderful tips and information here. I hope you’re doing beautifully and take care!💖🌘

    I work with a laptop so I can just move to the floor when I can't keep sitting at my desk anymore and it's the best thing.

    best part of floor sitting is you do naturally move more as part of it and I find my body prompts me to move as no longer feel comfortabl
    I've found a yoga block helpful
    I've just got a folding kneeling stool which is also good as a table for reading on the floor large hardback book and of course for kneeling

    definitely in the mode of stacking stuff right now, just to see how different heights work 😅 I think the ideal length of the table is 120cm, with at least 90cm space between the legs, in order to sit under it with a crosslegged position

    I used to have my gaming/pc setup on the floor when I moved and before I bought furniture. I have a nice chair and stuff now, but I can't help feel that I should've invested in a nice floor setup instead. I see so many floor chairs, desks, and tables from Japan that I could've imported and made a super nice setup out of, had I just known earlier.
    After experiencing it yourself it becomes kind of obvious that all their furniture based around the floor, isn't just because it was the traditional way things were done and it has a lot of perks.

    I remember the original video. I recently upgraded my own setup by getting a Saiji brand desk off Amazon, with adjustable height and tilt. I now have two floor desks as well as a variety of peripherals, so I can move the computer inputs separately both from the screen and from my body, where before my only option was to have one table with everything on it or use my lap, which worked, but not for everything - drawing with this setup eventually became uncomfortable even after trying various adjustments. I think the DIY solution is great to start and have recommended friends try testing it out with cardboard, tape and books first. But tilt control actually is pretty important for posture since it puts more of the surface at a similar distance from the shoulder, so it lets the head-spine relationship remain similar even if you have to reach out. With my new desk I can switch it up to type from a forward, seiza, cross-legged or squat position relatively easily.
    Something I also do regularly now is crawling exercises. This is something I learned about from the Bioneer's channel - there are endless variations on crawls, and they work every part of the body and also its ability to coordinate large muscle groups, so they're a simple way to address weak points. I would definitely recommend that to people who are having discomfort, low strength or circulation issues with floor sitting.

      Oh, your setup sounds awesome! Can I ask what Saiji desk you got? Do you use a laptop? I find it harder to adjust things using a desktop since there are so many parts involved.
      I totally agree about crawling! I do a lot of that myself. I'll have to look up Bioneer, but I've seen a lot of variations on Original Strength's channel as well. Thanks for the info!

      @Celeste M The Saiji model doesn't have a distinct name or id(Amazon selling grr) but it's their biggest XL size with the drawer and bookstand features, currently going for $90. Some people are actually using the bookstand slot to hold their screens, but I've been using it to hold reference material when drawing. It's a nice accessory, and the drawer works fine too for stowing anything up to the size of a large smartphone.
      I do use a laptop but I wouldn't consider this better than a desktop for ergonomics, because the design of them means that the screen and inputs are always in the same fixed relationship. So you can move it around, but you always have to either hunch over it or reach too far out. You can add height or angle it, but I've spent over a decade working with them and it's a fundamental limitation for extended use.
      What I do instead is use wireless keyboards and mice. The limitation here is that the traditional computer mouse needs a flat surface, which means that you have to stay near that surface and can't move it with you. I've tried out various alternatives and the two things I would recommend trying are
      1. A wireless keyboard and a wireless trackball mouse, because that eliminates the need for a mousing surface. Kensington and Logitech both make good trackballs but preferences on size and form factor vary - I'm a fan of Kensington's larger size for precision but some people swear by the thumb balls, and those are easier to lift and carry around.
      Or 2. A keyboard with a built in trackpad, which gives you one unit with the complete laptop style input experience, but with the screen separate. I have an Artek brand keyboard for this which has worked reliably for over a year. When getting wireless I prefer brands that have their own USB wireless dongle over Bluetooth wireless because the connection is usually more reliable.

    Ive worried for so long that people in zoom meetings will think im unprofessional or not taking them seriously if I'm sitting on the floor but chairs and the position they put me in hurt and now I have POTS so when my feet are down my body cant keep up with circulation so I'm just gonna do it

      I hope it’s been going great for you! I’ve got my set up angled such that my colleagues can’t actually tell that I’m on the floor. I have some artwork hung at a reasonable looking height behind me, and then just a plain wall, so they have no point of reference to the rest of the room. I don’t know how many people have honestly picked up on it, if any :-)

    You said you tend toward the sitting on your knees position, but you did the whole video mostly in the cross-legged position. I was wondering if your floor desk helped you to gradually be more comfortable in this position. I know a lot of people, including me, have trouble sitting for long in this position & often have the knees popping up high, not open and flat to the floor like yours are. That's one of my goals- to get more flexible in my hips & knees & stronger in my back to where I can sit longer in that position and feel comfortable. Thank you for the video! Looking into getting a floor desk!

      I think I have always been pretty comfortable in this position because it's one I sit in a lot (even when I was in chairs more of the time). But yes, the best way to get more comfortable in a position is to spend more time in it! The hard part is that if it's uncomfortable right now, it's harder to do that with, obviously, so one helpful trick is to add cushions or bolsters under or around yourself to make it easier, so you're in the position but without having to work as hard to hold yourself in it. If your knees are popping up, you could put some cushions (any kind of pillows or even rolled up towels, etc.) under each one. They might even be at different heights right now. Find wherever feels comfortable. Eventually, you can gradually lower the height of the bolsters as it becomes more comfortable. You could put something under your hips or behind your back if that helps too.
      You could also try doing some stretches (passive or active) to open up your hips more - this will be a gradual thing but it could definitely help over time. There are lots of tutorials on YT. Just do a search for adductors and hip external rotation (butterfly pose and happy baby would probably both be good places to start). I hope that helps! Good luck!

    Thank you for all the tips! I’ve been using my floor desk for about 2 years now. At the moment, I still get a lot of pins and needles from circulation getting cut off, even in cross legged or legs extended forward positions, including variations. Did you deal with this at all? I expected my circulation would improve, based on research I did on sitting in seiza, but I’m still dealing with it. I could probably afford to move around more, but I was wondering if you had any tips. Thanks!

      Hm, I haven't had too big an issue with that other than when I stay in one position too long, like you said. Maybe you could try setting a timer to remind yourself to switch every few minutes and see if that helps at all?

    You might want to try raising your monitor. Your forward head posture is a sign of regular poor ergonomics.

      It may be at least partially the other way around! Your knees will likely get stronger and more mobile if you (gradually) use them more. I encourage you to look up some of the resources in the description for exercises and tips to help ❤️

      @@CelesteM maybe it's gotten better since I'm on t but I was born with it and the doctor said I can't do anything about it expect for growing muscle, so you're right. But where I live there are a lot of hills and I don't have a gym near me
