I have a drier on my trane 1-1/2 ton heat pump and it's been on there since 1993. Good video.

So interesting to see what inside all of these HVAC components you take the time to split in half and show and explain for us. Thanks for taking the time.

Always interesting to see the insides. Those tiny balls have a lot of surface area. I guess that helps with neutralizing of acid. Thanks for showing.

So, to summarize, these are installed say after a burnout along with liquid filter/dryer, then within days they are both changed out except the suction filter is simply removed and a section of filler pipe installed? Do suction driers have the pressure ports because there would be no flash due to restriction as opposed to using delta-t across a liquid filter to check?

You are correct. The ports are for delta T.

I'm pretty sure the Sporlan ones still have a block the same as the liquid line ones, I think KMP has beads.
I have only cut a few open so could be wrong!

This is a dumb question (I’m not an HVAC professional), but if the intention is to leave it in the system only for a short time, then remove it, how would you go about removing it without opening-up the system again? I’m trying to imagine the procedure.

watcherjohnny You have to open the system and recharge when you are done.

Is this the same as the liquid line filter drier, where you have to change it every time you introduce the system to the atmosphere?

Suction line driers are usually placed in the system as a clean up for a contaminated system. If the system is opened after installing one, it should be removed.

grayfurnaceman So I should remove it, If I'm going to replace a txv. Then I would need to add a liquid line drier correct?

      You got it.

Had a combine harvester where that happened, filled the liquid line up, had to remove the pipework and blow it out and also rinse out the compressor. Had a massive air cooled diesel engine in it, scared the hell out of me firing it up to test it incase i got combined! haha

Yep defiantly sage advice GFM. These need to come out within days of start up. I've seen systems (new systems) trashed because service to remove them was never followed up on!!

When would you put a suction line filter in?
    in what situations?
    TIA

moi The suction drier is used as a compressor protector. When placed in the suction line just before the compressor it will capture particles from a compressor burnout and neutralize acid from the burnout.
