Generally accurate content, products are used for different reasons, acrylic is great for protecting cap sheet roofs at a low cost, also, acrylics form a base for future silicone applications, in areas of high condensate silicone should be used as acrylics and cause rotting of cap sheet such as near oceans, silicone adhesion is more limited than acrylic, high grade acrylics do not caulk not sure why so much dialogue on "caulking" as that was an old problem not with new high grade acrylics. Silicone roller app while easiest also requires more product at mils will differ greatly. Also, many brands of silicone only a few are truly excellent. Fabric plays a key roll in roof upgrades and should be considered.
Hi Dan - great comment. I’m trying to learn more about commercial roof coatings and you sure seem to know what you are talking about. Any chance we can connect? If so just let me know how to get in touch. Thanks
Hey there! It's always best to use like-kind materials when re-coating a previously coated roof. Acrylic and silicone don't mix well, and due to the nature of acrylic being a sacrificial material, it can be hard to get silicone to properly adhere.
After applying silicone coating you will have to replace the roof. Nothing sticks to silicone not even silicone. No permanent repairs can be made to the roof. This is the way manufacturers get you to replace your roof. Sooner than later. So after paying the higher price for silicone. You will have the cost of a reroof to look forward to. In the near future.
Hey there! Thanks for your comment. When it comes to coatings, it's all in the applicator's experience and knowledge. If someone doesn't apply to product properly, it can definitely create problems!!
Where did you get your information? I just saw a video from a roofer with 30 years' experience who claimed silicone can be repaired and applied with successive with successive coats.
@@colonyroofers4604 I started doing coatings in the late 80s. Fads come and go. In the best application conditions it's just a bad product. To each his own. It's not the first bad product that people pushed on the public with smoke and mirrors. Let me know when you get silicone to stick to silicone.
I have a 2 yrs roif need to paint is silicon ne better for metal roof in the Caribbean wilk it be slippery when wet is it the best ti used rhan arycluc roof paint
I did it silicone over granulated cap sheet and it worked excellent. On a different part of the building I used henrys aluminum coating. Roofing temps were way cooler with the aluminum.
@FellVoice You should always try to use like-kind material when applying a re-coat to get the best result. If you previously used acrylic coating we would suggest using that again. If you used silicone previously, it would be best to use that again as well. Hope that's helpful!
Silicone can stick to silicone, but the products need to be compatible on a molecular level in order for them to adhere to one another. It's important to try and use the same products and formulations whenever possible
Now that I have previously applied silicone roof coating to my Class A motorhome Will Acrylic bond adequately to the silicone and hold up to walking on? It doesn’t seem to bond well like the other comment mentions

PLEASE never apply silicone on sloped metal roofs , a death trap to walk on when wet and you have to clean it to make repairs or recoat in the future. Acrylics are number #1 choice when done right on metal roofs . We only use silicone for a topcoat on flat roofs with a polyurethane basecoat under it.
silicone is fine if you want to do small areas like filling cracks, anything other than that its a terrible waste of time and money, especially for asphalt shingle roofs.
@@Ron_Presley Sure, that would be fine. As I said, in small areas. Also you may want to check into some gutter guards, they are pretty cheap (roughly $2 for a 3ft section) I put them on only over the downspouts and they have saved me from leaves and needles clogging up my drain.
its not 'paint', but a different type of coating. I have seen it offered in other colors than white, but it isn't common because the reflectivity is reduced.
You did Not talk about the process of adhering to a surface. What happens over time ???? Will Silicon Peel with Heating and cooling of a surface ???
Outstanding advice. Many thanks for this upload!
Thank you for your video. I was on the fence as to what coating to use on my low profile garage roof. Silicone for sure.
Very good video no drum beats in the background I can hear what you're saying and I learned a lot

Is it possible to coat silicone over an acrylic coating ??

What about using a Henry’s acrylic coating to use as a primer for the Henry’s Tropi- Cool silicone on a flat roof that sure is a torch down?
look down in the comments because this question was addressed. Basically not a good idea because the silicone may not adhere to acrylic.

@J. Bekus if it lasts 20 to 30 years, what's the problem?

Can Silicone go over GAF Roof Cap material on Flat roof?

Can you apply silicone over acrylic or vice versa?
That's one thing he didn't mention about silicone. Is when it comes to recoating nothing sticks to silicone except silicone.

Hi,
Once you apply silicone on flat roof can you reapply silicone again on it ?
yes if properly cleaned, only silicone can be applied over silicone
Can I apply silicone with a paint brush or roller
yes
yes but you will get texturing called orange peel surface meaning your mils will vary more than when spraying
Ponding can be filled before applying
What do you fill it with?

What about just where it ponds up when my drains plug up from the needles of a tree near my house?
