You can, but its not a cut and dry answer. It all depends on the grains and the extraction. You obviously need to hit the right gravity. The size of the mash tun will then depend on your grain bill. It would probably be best to use an app like Brewers Friend. You can build a recipe around the wort amount and make sure you are getting the correct gravity.
Yeah probably not an official term , Kevin our head brewer uses this term to explain a mash that isn't worked on the normal ratios, he mashes with close to his target pre boil and sparges what he loses in grain absorption
My all in one brew monk system, would you add the dead space volume to the total strike water? Obviously there is no loss from mash to boil except absorption, but there is space under the grain basket which doesn't get mixed into the grains, so increasing the strike volume otherwise the mash is a lot thicker than anticipated.
Good info! Ive just brewed your hoppy APA in BITB meathod, its a great kit and all went well, what is the goal with mash and sparge quanities? Is it simply to maximise quantity and efficiency or is it more complex than that? Also what is the grain weight of this kit? Thx.
Thanks the hoppy APA is 6.4kg of Malt. The goal is to ensure you hit your target gravity and volumes so you can make the same beer consistently. We used this video to briefly explain how to calculate this as everyones system will differ. Let me know if we can help further
Thank you for this. It was just the quick, concise info I needed to decide which Sparge water heater I needed to order.
Awesome, thank you 👍
Thanks for this, you have explained this in a way that is perfect for a new brewer to understand
Thanks Shane
Thanks for the tips mate, much appreciated💯👍.
Excellent, as always.
Superb easy to follow thank you 👍
Can you work backwards? If I want 50ltr of wart. How much grain would I need? What size mash tun and hlt? I have a 60 Orr kettle

Just ordered your neipa and session ipa all grain kits. Just wondered if I should be following this general rule for sparging if using BIAB?
Great content as usual can you explain what you mean by a wet mash

Yes everyone will need to adjust to suit their system and that sounds spot on for the brewmonk
