Another part of what keeps these cases ignored, buried, or minimized is the fact that the very government departments that are charged with protecting children, (in particular) have their own scandalous complicit "skeletons" that they are protecting.
They don't want the spotlight to rest near them or for changes to be implemented that make it more difficult for them to keep doing the awful things THEY are doing.

I have to wonder where were the parents of these girls while all of this was going on? I grew up in the 70s and both my parents worked shifts. My mom checked called us during her breaks, and we had to answer the phone by the 2nd ring. No cell phones, so we had to be in the house when the call came. My parents had other family members drop in unannounced to check up on us. If any boys were coming by, especially a grown man, the neighbors would have told on us. I don't understand how something so horrific could happen and the parents are not aware, or at least suspicious.

@@tlw842 Hmmm, a girl who did speak up and her parents intervened, their son had both his legs broken. He was a teenager. Can you just imagine? This is mafia level where the intimidation must have been horrific. Another girl both her parents were disabled. The groomer buttered up the parents. The daughter was already on drugs due to dealing with her parents disability at such a young age. I get it. We think parents must be responsible and they should be but saying that when gangs and POLICE can use each other for power over these families what chance did they ever have? Besides do YOU know what your kids are doing every minute of every day? We hope to bring them up not trusting strangers, no drugs etc but then life intervenes and you never know.

Your knowledge on this subject Phil is very illuminating and your Labour sympathies Phil don’t prevent from making very fair minded observations IMO.
I agree with your observations about politicians being afraid to make difficult decisions and raise difficult issues for fear of accusations of racism. Also, I think some parts of the Labour Party have been more concerned about losing votes. My concern now is whether the issue will become a party political football as opposed to those of integrity working together for genuine progress to be made. As you said Phil no party is exempt from blame and also the role of the police has been woeful.

It's not possible to have emotional detachment from this issue though. The age old problem of a power inbalance, and what some people, almost always males, will do because they can.
Depending on how generally powerful or not the perpetrators are, and how powerful or not the victims are, something or nothing will be done about it.
Large scale instances are often compounded with an horrific lesser of two evils trade off. Whether it's loyalty to individuals despite known crimes, fear of bad publicity for an institution, or what seems to be fear of worsening community relations.

His backing of Trump, supporting the far right political party in Germany and stating the blacks of South Africa were openly pushing for genocide of whites is enough to make me doubt his motives. His claiming Keir Starmer was "deeply complicit in the mass rapes in exchange for votes” was way over the top.

This is such a harrowing & distressing situation in the UK & this was covered very honestly by both of you & shows exactly how the mainstream media should be doing it. Those poor poor girls, their families, including their children will have generations of healing to deal with. The people in positions of authority who were involved in this should all be held to account as they are too busy trying to save their own necks & make excuses by using dismissive language & an inability to accept that they have completely failed at their chosen careers. Every single one of them involved should lose their jobs. It is nothing but sickening & reflects extremely badly on every single MP who decided to not vote for a national enquiry last night. Those doing the 'grooming' need to be dealt with as a matter of urgency by our police, judicial system & deported or imprisoned immediately.

There are plenty of politicians from both sides who don't want the lid lifted incase it blows up in their faces.what the victims need is what women have been shouting for for the last century deeds not words , policies and recommendations that could have been actions over 2 years ago at the conclusion of the previous enquiry are still to be implemented.

Thank you Shauna and Phil. The discussion was so informative. From my research whistleblowers, particularly women face more retaliation than their male counterparts. The negativity towards a whistleblower who speaks out, holds many sexual abuse victims within their own prison for the rest of their lives. As they know they will not be believed. Or shunned by the community. They are called troublemakers and traitors and in some cases they are told "You should be over that by now." "Why bring the past up?" Another common one is "They are in it for the money. " I was one of those. The fear of being labeled a whistleblower was foremost in my mind when I came forward on the sexual abuse cover ups by the Catholic Church in Newcastle. So much so when the Inspector leading the Enquiry was being interviewed by Tony Jones on ABC Dateline, Jones "labelled" me a "whistleblower" I was more worried about being branded this than giving evidence in Court at the NSW Special Enquiry in Newcastle. I also knew I would be labelled a traitor but the Church community. With my evidence the findings were that I was the credible witness and not the men in cassocks! Of course! Thankfully international media is now the voice for those who had/have no voice. Powerful people can no longer hide their appalling behavior behind their "high walls of privilege."

Sorry Phil. Typo! It was Lateline! Actually the Detective (Fox) who was interviewed by Jones had not be given permission by the Strike Force (Lantle) to give the interview. (He was taken off the Enquiry for various reasons.) One of the reasons was that he gave my police statement to a Journalist without my permission and without the knowledge of the Police Force. Since the Enquiry finished in 2013 the head of the Strike Force, his wife and I catch up for lunch every few months! I am only known as Witness AJ so it was a big step to out myself on this podcast! No one who is convicted of a crime in the UK should be able to use UK law to avoid being deported. If necessary the UK law should be changed to state that the right to the benefits and protections afforded by UK are forfeited by anyone of dual nationality committing a crime. No arguments- out, and UK nationality is automatically lost too. This would protect the law abiding majority of the population.

Great pod cast Shauna & Phil.
I had no idea about the "grooming gangs" as such until Elon Musk Tweets recently.
However, I stumbled on Emma Kenny's True Crime You Tube channel and listened to her deep dive into Gisele Pelicot bravery.
... On a side note I think Gisele Pelicot is one of the bravest women advocates of our time. Her courage and dignity is just so humbling to me.
~ "Shame must change sides. " Gisele Pelicot, 2024
But back to Emma Kenny and her true crime pod cast deep dives. I was SHOCKED, over and over at how many r@pe cases were ignored and / or dropped by the UK CDP for (in my opinion) misogynistic and / or basically NO apparent reason. Many of these perpetrators went on to murder. It is all so beyond my comprehension how this could possibly happen in this day and age.
Emma Kenny has also written a book "The Serial Killer Next Door." I think Emma's perspective on this would certainly be worth listening to.
Again: "Shame must change sides". ~ Gisele Pelicot. And my very sincere apologies to every victim, I'm so sorry that we as a society have let you down. I wish for you hope, peace and a bright future. 🥹🙏🏼🪻🌟🇦🇺

I absolutely agree that information about race or ethnic background is important in the effort to protect children. I live in Mexico. I have reason to believe that people tend to look the other way if they know about child rape on the grounds that it's a private family matter. The same goes for domestic violence. There is a danger that knowledge of the ethnicity of perpetrators could inflame prejudice and racism among the ignorant, but in my view, it is more important to protect children. A full and independent public inquiry, with broad powers, is certainly called for.

Great episode. I think the two of you will be an excellent pair for this new project. There was something arresting which Phil said. It was about the girls being "not middle class" and hence vulnerable. That people didn't care because they saw them as less valuable to society. And I realized that I was guilty of the same type of thinking. I saw an episode of Andrew Gold's "Heretics" with Maggie Oliver as guest. With many of the stories being "Oh my, how do you deal with this situation?" I wanted to shout out, "You should have picked a better father!" Not helpful, to say the least. Then realizing that many came from single parent families, or parents who were rarely home because they were out working, or impossible extended family situations. And then I remembered how frustrated I felt that so many people here were so outraged by what they thought were an enormous number of migrant children who were missing and being sexually exploited or having their organs stolen before being buried in the desert. And the people who were outraged were the people who most wanted to clamp down on immigration here in the US. I still don't understand their thinking. I have no way of knowing if this is true or how many victims there might be. But there are many people who are very upset about it. And they think that Biden & the other Democrats knew all about it and were just covering it up. And that Hollywood was somehow involved, at least in sex trafficking. It goes on and on. So, while the situation here is very different in its details, there is an underlying pattern and societal upset and concern that ring true. You guys could make it your mission to try and get to a better understanding of just what and why people all over the Five Eyes have become so divided and angry with each other. Any contribution to elucidating that morass would be a good thing. And how do we start talking sanely, with calm and compassion, as that would send out at least a few rays of light into the world.

Totally agree Shauna, there's too much of if you think this, you're right, far right or fascist and if you think that, you're left, far left or bloody communist. We need the practical and logical centre. There's right and wrong on both sides. Great chat, thanks!

Bless Elon Musk. Bless Maggie Oliver. Prayers for the victims.
In the US, poorer girls are sex trafficked much, much more frequently.

Race IS absolutely relevant in this case - I would urge you to listen to RAJA MAIH, a Pakistani Muslim from Oldham, who has been an activist against this horror for years. He tells us of the massive scale of this crime taking place all over Pakistan and how it has been imported into other countries. He also exposes the authorities for incompetence and, in some cases, criminal negligence in handling the victims' stories. I too voted Labour in the past but now see this Party as being at the forefront of this scandal.

Great show despite the subject matter. This issue in UK was very obviously a known issue going back years. I remember a storyline in one of the Brit’s police shows about a young girl with an exotic boyfriend who she thought loved her and was then passed around to all of his friends. The outcome in the storyline was very different of course, and justice was done. I can’t remember the series, it may have been the Bill or Frost so quite a long time ago.
