    I just bought my first Arri Alexa, a used XT Plus to be precise. After using every "prosumer" camera for years and bending LUTs and Davinci wheels into contortions to get the "look", I'm getting the look right out of the camera with a little easy grading. The Arri image is something I just can't get out of Panasonic or Canon cameras.The color and imagery is rich, like film without all the grain. The camera is definitely a heavy beast and difficult to move around. But it's built like a tank. Don't want to come across as a fanboy, but Arri is essentially the Mercedes of cameras. Pan/Can & Sony make nice cameras, but their parent companies all make many other consumer products, diluting their engineering talent to other markets. Arri only creates fantastic cameras, lenses and lighting.

    Hi Rubidium, really nice channel!
    I really don't think the owner-operator paradigm was really causing the Alexa dominance, in fact, in the early years of this digital shift, most dops I worked with were buying reds (I remember Storaro got 4 of the premxs red one for his 2:1 univisium...)and most of the american ones (I work in Europe mainly) weren't buying at all.
    The thing with ARRI shadowing RED power in the 2008-2010 was due to providing a far superior DR, ready to post (1080P in already industry standard prores format) with the same simple, century old language camera assistants and dops known. Alexa color science is based in Kodak Vision, and it's dynamic range was designed to mimic the same response in the ISO changes that you'll get from a push/pull process from a vision negative.
    Remember ARRI has not only 70+ years of film camera experience, but 30+ in film. scanners and kynescopes (arri lasers) so they had the background and put it in the camera DSPs.
    The thing is, you could get the same image from a red... in post. Alexa was already baking in a look that was familiar, predictable and known by the the whole camera and post department, and it did so in a already familiar package. RED was designed with a post setmind, and that was a completely alien language to be taught to dops and camera assistants.
    I was involved in some of the first red/mx/epic/alexa shootings in Spain, and I can sum it as this: In a RED shoot you spent about 15 minutes per day trying to explain the differences between frame sizes, framerate vs.sensor fps, absolute vs. relative shutters to the whole cam dep, even producers... In an alexa shoot you just explain where the WB and ISO buttons were and everybody was ready to go. Postproduction at first was another drama: proxies, debayering, etc vs prores easy-piece.
    RED was designed from a post producer point of view, but films are shot by camera people (and post people are not exactly risk takers, at least here...), so I really don't think this was a owner-operators pushing their agenda thing, but another example of how is not the first to come the one who wins, but the least disruptive with the status quo.
    Congratulations on your channel!
    Jose

      Thanks Jose! You bring up some great points. I totally agree that Red's workflow of pushing decisions and costs into post didn't appeal to the camera dept. or the producers.

    The Viper was also used for David Fincher's Zodiac - which honestly still looks like one of the best digitally shot movies ever made... and they recorded in 1080p.
    Mann likes the digital looks that's why it looked digital. Even Public Enemies has that aesthetic when they used a RED and Sony F23.
    Its the person using the camera - not the camera.

    People tend to compare only the image quality against Alexa, but there are more to it, like the formats it records, the number and quality of outputs, easy and intuitive menus, building quality (look up for burned Alexa on Arri channel), color science, plus all you mentioned in the video. Definitely my favourite camera!

    I'm a Technical Manager for a very successful production company and work with all sorts of camera systems. What I've discovered is that pretty much all the moderate to higher end cameras are pretty amazing. Each manufacturer has built into their camera systems their own color science and as a result the way I choose a camera is very similar to choosing a film stock. Much like each film stock has it's own color characteristics the same goes for digital cameras. There isn't a right or wrong choice it's about the story at the end of the day (until budget becomes a factor). These are great videos keep them coming.

    as Hollywood crumbles all these lesser known camera companies are going to catch on, not to knock Arri because they are the standard. But Panasonic is killing it, they have a whole line to enter with so many ways to go in terms of what lenses you can get. Gh5, S1h, EVA1, Vari lt, Vari35 and they will all match. all these guys that have had Gh5s for years now and have made some money should be upgrading to EVA1, Varicam lt, and we might end up seeing some good indy flicks from these guys or gals.
    For me who ever is the most modular, so i can buy what ever monitor or lenses I want. there are some good chinese companies out there that I think will start coming out with very cheap and eventually good, anamorphic lenses.

    It's a great video but it doesn't really jibe with my memory of how things went down. I think the first issue being that the Arri Alexa wasn't Arri's first digital cinema camera. They brought out the D-20 and the D-21 before the Alexa and that came out in 2005 when Panavision were dipping their feet into digital with what was the more popular camera the Genesis. I think my understanding is that officially Roland Emmerich's film Anonymous was the first movie to shoot Alexa but what really made it exciting for filmmakers apart from it's film like dynamic range was that you could get it with an optical viewfinder but more importantly that it shot PRORES 4:4:4 directly onto SXS cards which made it's workflow unbeatable.
    Collateral was shot in the early days of digital cinema as well and used the Viper as well as the F900 and there is even some 35mm film in there. The look of Michael Mann's digital films comes about because of the 360 degree shutter though I think David Fincher's Zodiac and Benjamin Button are better examples of what the Viper could do.

    One more question please. How does the canon 1dx Mark ii compare to the canon C200?

    • @Crimsonengine

      Its a better video camera in almost every way: except that the 1dx is full frame and the c200 has the smaller, s35 sensor.

    In what way do you believe the canon c200 is lacking compared to the allexa

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  6 лет назад

      I don’t. I actually think the internal Raw in the c200 is a big step up from the prores on the Alexa. But Alexa is the industry standard.

    • @sols9449
      @sols9449 6 лет назад

      Crimson Engine so basically your saying that you could shoot any film on a canon c200. Not including cgi and effects which today there are plenty of. But like baby driver or something like that it could do it?

    • @Crimsonengine
      @Crimsonengine  6 лет назад +2

      I'm saying that the Raw c200 footage is technically superior to the alexa footage. And yes, you could shoot any film on it.

      Crimson Engine wow that’s amazing. It’s amazing how blessed we are today with technology. I’m a professional photographer and I’m getting into cinematography now for the first time. I find it all so fascinating. Thanks for the great context.

      @@Crimsonengine is it technically superior in its dynamic range? In it's colour science? In it's abilities in mixed light? In its resolving power? How is the C200 RAW a step up from ARRI RAW? The C200 might be great for the money, but does it improve upon the cinematic qualities of the Alexa in any way at all? No.
