Ryan, teaching us very important film making tips and tutorials. We don't pay him directly, and he always delivers. You are awesome dude! We really appreciate you!
Your wonderful explanation at the beginning aside, you've made this very very very clear all along. The show has always been about progression. The wonderful thing about RUclips is you can go back and watch episodes if youre still at the low budget end. But complaining that a youtube channel doesn't keep making cheap DIY episodes because "you" don't want to progress doesn't mean that the channel has to stay stale. Besides.....who doesn't want to see cool gear??? :)
I love this type of episode, and kudos to the way you addressed it at the start. I work in post-prod so I never get to play with these production toys, but the Mini especially is starting to be used more and more in both TV shows and features, and so this is great for me to watch and learn where my footage is coming from. Appreciated!
Long time Film Riot viewer here. I remember watching your show back in the early 2010s where I was lucky enough to pick up two of these anamorphic lenses, which I've loved for years and agree with you completely. Back then, no one was buying them and they were all over youtube. Got two 35mm lenses for around $600. Blows my mind how I'm now watching a FIlm Riot video about them. It really has come full circle! Keep up the great work guys, you have always been who I've recommended people to who are looking to get started.
Just the Video for my Anamorphic Lens Playlist. One thing I really noticed about my DIY Anamorphic Lens was the _feeling_ it gave to the Camera, the way the Panning speeds differed due to the squeezing. My Lens Adapter has no issues with close and distant focusing and uses no Diopters.
So stoked that you guys got an Alexa on the show! It's a beautiful camera, and the images (especially with those lenses) are glorious. Can't wait to get my hands on that kind of setup one day!
Thank you for upgrading your videos to the next level. Personally, 5 years ago I was at your DIY level tutorial. Now... this is more my level. If you grow, I grow too. People complaining need to go back and watch your old stuff, or graduate to the next level already:)
I'm a shortfilm maker and shot both of my shorts on the Alexa with Lomo Anamorphic lenses (second one with Alexa mini). I love the look and have positive experiences with this combo. It's expensive but I was incredibly lucky to get sponsorships at a very low price. My DoP is also an Alexa teacher so it felt very comfortable with him and that camera. We shot Log C, ProRes4444XQ and first film was cropped to 2.39:1 and second film will be (still in post) 2:1. My only complaint would be that it's not a good choice if you want a very sharp look, the look is more soft, creamy and cinematic.
Really cool! Hey, you might already have done an episode on this, but you mention near the end the importance of choosing lenses based on what you want the audience to feel. Do you have a episode breaking down the different lenses and different feels? Or do you know where one can find a good explanation about that? Thanks a bunch. Film Riot rocks!
Just want to say as a camera op/dop still trying to break into the industry in the UK, I really appreciate this, not only because I could geek out at the amazing look this camera and lenses can provide, but also I'll probably not shit myself if I get the opportunity to work with this gear in the future.
So first you video-people torture the engineers with " we want more res, higher quality, give us 2 K, give us 4K" and now you are looking for ways to make the quality WORSE? Now, seriously …
+Ernst Stavro Blofeld imagine scanning film at a lower bit/resolution. all the flaws are covered up by compression and banding issues. its about being able to have the options to use any method needed to tell your story.
Good luck ! (I'm 14 and i make some videos that's fun and 'think that will be my "Job Later" sorry if I don't speek a perfect english but I'm French !)
I feel you. I mean, I understand that my subscribers really wanna meet me and what not, as I'm soon reaching 10 subs. It's not that I don't care about any of my 8 subscribers or anything, but, privacy is privacy, man.
I'm really loving the image of the Alexa Mini, but there's just something about the anamorphic lenses and their focus that feels off to me. When I'm looking at an image with a shallow depth of field, it looks like the out-of-focus areas appear warped in a circle-like shape. I can definitely see it in the shots with the natural scenery. That could be just the Alexa's de-squeezing feature and I can see that effect being used for dream-like sequences. But overall, not too fond of it if I need shallow focus for scenes that aren't supposed to be dreamy-looking. Then again, it depends on the story I want to tell. That's probably it. Thanks, Film Riot!
Wow, thank you so much for this. 👍 I am shooting a short on an Alexa with an anamorphic and I wanted to make sure I was prepared. There are so many videos for smartphone anamophics, but not enough for cinema cameras.
People are always going to hate on everything! Some people just thrive on it. I think that yall are doing a great job and love the work that you put out. It has helped me become a better cinematographer and photographer at the same time. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
Hey Ryan, the music you used for the demo; is it something we can use that is royalty free? Free or not, what's the name of it, and where would I find it? Thanks~
I use an Arri Alexa and the menu system on the Arris is miles easier and better than the Canon cinema range. Simplier is better if you ask me, all the features are still there.
great video! can't wait to use one of these. where's the score from (during your test shots) by the way? Was that you or from a website that offers score music?
Even if this camera has it's high price I think it's very interesting to know what it can actually do. And I am a filmmaker who works with lower budget equipment. But who knows when you get the chance to work with something like the Alexa Mini in the future? Rental houses could make it possible soon. x) So thanks for your video!
Awesome! Alexa always make me cry and think about kicking my dslr to space lol. I Agree, now make some Black Magic!! Please compare the pocket and the 5D!! Best regards!!!!
I live for anamorphic lenses....they are so tied to the history of cinema (70s cinema especially) that every time a DP or director uses them to shoot a movie it automatically makes me tune in a little bit more.
Hi ! Thanks for the video. Could you tell me what is the music you used during the test shots please ? And have you a website to recommend to find these kind of "illustration" musics ? Thanks a lot
Rely nice ! I didn't now anamorphic lenses worked that way ! I think there are filters (like an N/D filter), that help emulated the anamorphic look (at least in the boket). Have you ever try some ? Is it interesting ?
I know at the beginning Ryan went over why they're doing higher budget camera reviews, and I agree with him but would still love to see some lower budget camera stuff, I loved the osmo review/ string of videos. Also have you used any anamorphic lenses on the GH4?
Hey Ryan, great video man. I have a question about this whole camera plus Lomo lens subject. For my feature film, I want to use these lenses badly. I will rent from Lensprotogo but I know these are PL lenses, so they only work with PL mounts. I really wish you guys would do a video about the GH4, I'd really love to hear your thoughts on it, especially since you were considering getting it before you chose the C100.
hey Ryan, im guessing you've heard about the water bottle trick shot. do you think you can do it with VXF without 3D models? thanks I love your show a lot, keep it up.
WB / DCEU kind of let down not just myself but a lot of people with Suicide Squad. they really need to make a stand-alone Joker / Harley Quinn movie with Jared Leto and Margot Robbie! What can we as the subscribers and fans of film riot / Triune Films do to get them to consider you all for the project? I personally feel you guys will be the best fit to allow it to be the best movie for WB/DCEU!
Personally think it's grand that you're bringing in the big guns...or mini-big guns...more for the learnin'! Either way, solidly handled disclaimer that you shouldn't have had to do!
Ryan you son of a gun, now I'm looking at Alexa footage and I don't think I'll ever be satisfied with gear now 😭😭😭 lmao but good video man. Did it tingle when you touched that camera? I think it would
I think Film Riot gets too concerned about scaring off DIY fans. What I like about Film Riot is watching the progress from amateur to professional. I've enjoyed the journey from Josh's pimply face in "Teleportation Tourette's Syndrome" to whatever the hell that is in "Create Your Own Snapchat Effects". I hope one day they'll be showing us behind the scenes of a block buster movie made by Triune Films.
Hey! I really like colours and adding a colour scheme into films but thats pretty hard to do to things like the setting when you are just working with whatever location you can get and have no budget. Do you guys know any ways of giving your film an effective colour scheme with no budget?
Hey Ryan, how they shot invisible camera effect in the movie "Enter The Void (2001) gasper noé", it'll be helpfull if you shoot a episode related to this topic 😊
If Film Riot prepared you to shoot a film with an Alexa Mini, you shouldn't shoot with an Alexa Mini. Professional cameras are for professionals. As a professional television producer, I enjoy hearing about this gear and seeing it demonstrated, but I hire professionals to actually use the gear, and you should, too. DPs and Cam Ops get the big bucks because you can't replace experience with a few RUclips videos.
There aren't a lot of filmmakers out there, creativity takes effort, a big majority aren't willing to do that. A 9 to 5 job pays and is little less effort, so why be creative when you can be technical.
I've been working with an Arri Alexa for the past month at my film school. It's menu system is by far the best for cinematographers. Next would be Canon, but that's because I'm used to it... My new A7S II, while the shots are beautiful, the means of getting there need fixing. Sony menus are the worst. What do you guys think?
I rather want gear (and a good location and story and everything) because if I got money I have to decide which gear to get and then I'll probably think I bought the wrong gear :D
+PhotOZ - Quadrocopter-Videos and more I would spend it all on gear and end up not having any budget to pay actors... But I'd have sweet toys to play with !!!!🎞🎞🎞🎞🎞🎥🎥🎥🎥🎥📽📽📽📽📽

Dude, those lenses have the looks I've been wanting.
Same here. First time using them too. I absolutely love the look they get. Such an organic and classic feel.
Because it's made in USSR)
+Film Riot These lenses are beautiful, but what was the soundtrack used in the montage in the second half?
Long time Film Riot viewer here. Bloody good video. Wouldn't find this type of content at this standard anywhere else. Thanks Ryan.
That's a high compliment! Thank you. So glad you got something out of the episode.
+Film Riot always do Ryan. Often a lot better than actual film school too.
I'm really baffled as to how you guys don't even have 1 mil subs yet. More people need to know about this channel!
+Giancarlo Martino have you been to film school mate
I love your content. And I hope you guys will keep producing great free content for years to come.
Thanks man! That's our plan. :)
So stoked that you guys got an Alexa on the show! It's a beautiful camera, and the images (especially with those lenses) are glorious. Can't wait to get my hands on that kind of setup one day!
Those shots were absolutely beautiful. Like a Chris Nolan Dark Knight kind of look and feel.

Here's the first short: vimeo.com/186196503 (oh and this film had grain and flicker added)
Love this Ryan, don't ever stop doing what you doing. We will hopefully all get to use an Alexa Mini one day so this is very helpful!
The lomo lenses looked fantastic. Almost had a "Cooke look" type of feel from what I have seen. Really great vintage look.
Sketches are fun. Small, less than 2 minutes, with one VFX shot. That's what got me hooked on FR....
I really appreciate these walkthroughs of high-end gear. Thanks to them, I'm not afraid to leave my dslr and rent this for big projects!
Seeing that footage I just thought about how cool Proximity and Tell would have looked like with this camera.
he's showing us the settings like any of us will ever lay hands on it. lemme see footageeeee
That's a defeatist attitude.
+Film Riot work hard, save some money, and renting is your best friend. 👍🏻😎😉
Just want to say as a camera op/dop still trying to break into the industry in the UK, I really appreciate this, not only because I could geek out at the amazing look this camera and lenses can provide, but also I'll probably not shit myself if I get the opportunity to work with this gear in the future.
+Mark Nugent (Camera In Mind) That's amazing to hear. That's exactly why we made this episode. Thanks man.
So first you video-people torture the engineers with " we want more res, higher quality, give us 2 K, give us 4K" and now you are looking for ways to make the quality WORSE? Now, seriously …

Jon Christopherson Is it really needed to tell the story?
I'd say it's just a useless whim.
That footage from the Alexa Mini looks amazing
That's a pretty powerful cam and lens combo.
I want to be a filmmaker when I'm older, I'm 13 right now, and you guys are rad for doing this. I've learned so many things
you can be a filmmaker right now! Just do it man record your friends!
+Alexander Rzb True story Guy !
That's awesome man. Start making your films now! By the time you hit 20 you'll be a filmmaking machine!
+Film Riot good plan, I'll write, shoot, edit, and repeat. ^-^ 👍
Good luck ! (I'm 14 and i make some videos that's fun and 'think that will be my "Job Later" sorry if I don't speek a perfect english but I'm French !)
I think this combination would be great for a movie which takes time in the 60's or something like that. And as always, great Episode!
Beautiful! Thanks for making vids like this. No one showcases equipment quite like you guys.
Those anamorphic lens flares are so fucking rad
i love how he tells a story with beautiful quality even if just for a review of lenses, amazing job Film Riot...
Hey guys i just reached 300 subs! Please stop coming to my house and knocking on my door guys, jeez.
Fame is hard, man...
Yeah, I have 74 subs and the phone doesn't stop ringing!
I feel you. I mean, I understand that my subscribers really wanna meet me and what not, as I'm soon reaching 10 subs. It's not that I don't care about any of my 8 subscribers or anything, but, privacy is privacy, man.
Can't wait for a new film riot short shot with this setup! Please let it be

I use an Arri Alexa and the menu system on the Arris is miles easier and better than the Canon cinema range. Simplier is better if you ask me, all the features are still there.
Id love to see you guys do a video on product shooting, the video you did of the Arri is beautiful in itself

I Agree, now make some Black Magic!! Please compare the pocket and the 5D!!
Best regards!!!!
This gear is too expensive! I want the old DIY Film Riot!
hahaha! mate your a legend
hahaha
That makes exactly zero sense!
Makes Zero sense!!! LOL Great channel btw!
Thats why they rented the camera and gear. We got to move foward, not stick on old manners.
Worked a Week in Munich @ Arri Studios and saw how the Alexa's Produced ;) Greetings from Germany
btw i did also tested the Alexa Studio :P
I like that song you used in the sample footage segment. Can I buy that from one your music packs?
Very nice episode!! It would be nice to see a "battle of cameras " like Blackmagic pocket vs gh4 / c500 vs fs5 fs7 etc ! Great show guys!!
I live for anamorphic lenses....they are so tied to the history of cinema (70s cinema especially) that every time a DP or director uses them to shoot a movie it automatically makes me tune in a little bit more.
Ooooo anamorphic 😃😄
And there's tons of affordable options for shooting anamorphic.
Alexa Mini Vs Ursa Mini 4.6k :)
Alexa... Alexa always wins. It has no competition.
I'm sure it wins, but I wanna see how the Ursa keeps up. Similar to FS7 vs C300 mkii
URSA mini 4.6k is amazingggggg
yeah... Film Riot please make a review for Blackmagic Cameras!
A person who makes fantastic videos also watches film riot? I love pbl
I showed my girlfriend this video. And when the sexy time - Alexa body shots came on she's like "so this is what you watch" 😂
That image quality is insane😮
Dream setup!!
Did you try the lenses with your c100? How does it compare?
Once again great episode!
Haha I remember ryan saying the same thing on the time freeze episode. Totally get where you are coming from!! We appreciate all you teach us man :)
Hi ! Thanks for the video. Could you tell me what is the music you used during the test shots please ? And have you a website to recommend to find these kind of "illustration" musics ?

Oh my - the shot at 7:15 is a total throwback for me, total USSR cinema look... fs131.www.ex.ua/show/14098525/14098525.jpg?1600
Amazing Episode!
I only have one question.. Did you color grade the footage that you shot with the Alexa Mini? Or that was directly what you got?
Looked slightly graded, it would still look great though ungraded.
I love Film Riot. Like, I learn so much from you guys and it's awesome
Hey Ryan, great video man.
I have a question about this whole camera plus Lomo lens subject.
For my feature film, I want to use these lenses badly. I will rent from Lensprotogo but I know these are PL lenses, so they only work with PL mounts. For the shoot, the Alexa Mini may be to expensive for the whole time, but the Blackmagic URSA mini 4.6k is much cheaper. So do you think if I went with that camera matched with theses lenses I'd be ok?
Thanks!
Chase
Keep up the good work. Love seeing the spectrum that you cover.
This video was published on my 19th birthday!
Happy birthday man!
THANK YOU RYAN!! (btw, don't apologize about testing out expensive gear. I've been watching you guys from the start and it's nice to see how far you've come)
Awesome camera, lenses, and episode.
can i just say before i even watched the video i was going to respectfully say that i would like some more diy stuff turned on the video and now totally agree with you great videos keep it up man
Great episode, nice to see some pro gear reviewed in a simple way
I really wish you guys would do a video about the GH4, I'd really love to hear your thoughts on it, especially since you were considering getting it before you chose the C100.
amazing review! love the anamorphic lens imperfections!
One day but for now ill be slapping on an Alexa Mini sticker on the side of my phone case
hey Ryan, im guessing you've heard about the water bottle trick shot. do you think you can do it with VXF without 3D models? thanks I love your show a lot, keep it up.
its episodes like these that make you look experienced in a set that has more expensive gear.
Is it just me that thinks Stark looks a lot like Tom Hardy?
Aboslutely beautiful stuff! Id love to get my hands on an alexa
WB / DCEU kind of let down not just myself but a lot of people with Suicide Squad. they really need to make a stand-alone Joker / Harley Quinn movie with Jared Leto and Margot Robbie! Mondays Questions Ryan's Sack Mail time thingy - What is Panavision? I sort of have an idea, but I'm not entirely sure.
Ryan! Will you teach a cat how to be a dog? I'm waiting for it, you better come through. :)
Great stuff
Personally think it's grand that you're bringing in the big guns...or mini-big guns...more for the learnin'! Either way, solidly handled disclaimer that you shouldn't have had to do!
+Tom thank you sir.
All in a days work peeps
Curious to see those anamorphic lenses on a GH4 since it also g]has in-camera de-squeeze - useful for those of us on lower budgets
Ryan you son of a gun, now I'm looking at Alexa footage and I don't think I'll ever be satisfied with gear now 😭😭😭 lmao but good video man. Did it tingle when you touched that camera? I think it would
did you shoot with the film matrix on, because the greens look teal.
THANK YOU. This is the video I needed!

Who else wanna see Ryan teach a cat how to be a dog !? xD
RYAN! How come you haven't considered reviewing a beast called Ursa Mini 4.6K that compares to REDs and Alexas for ~95% cheaper price?
kill me, one day I will own an alexa and a set of anamorphic lenses
Hey! I really like colours and adding a colour scheme into films but thats pretty hard to do to things like the setting when you are just working with whatever location you can get and have no budget. Do you guys know any ways of giving your film an effective colour scheme with no budget?
I see u at 1 million in 2 months ! congrats for that !
Hey Ryan! I was wondering if you could tell me, which ones are the best editing programs of the market? Thanks so much!
film riot should be teaching this stuff on iphones !
Hey Ryan, how they shot invisible camera effect in the movie "Enter The Void (2001) gasper noé", it'll be helpfull if you shoot a episode related to this topic 😊

I just want a million dollars to make a film!!!!

Meeeee!!!!!
well you got me there
I rather want gear (and a good location and story and everything) because if I got money I have to decide which gear to get and then I'll probably think I bought the wrong gear :D
+PhotOZ - Quadrocopter-Videos and more I would spend it all on gear and end up not having any budget to pay actors... But I'd have sweet toys to play with !!!!🎞🎞🎞🎞🎞🎥🎥🎥🎥🎥📽📽📽📽📽
Very interesting episode, thanks ryan! :)
Arri Alexa is the king of cameras
youtube seriously isnt doing the footage any justice with its compression... but then there's plenty of footage from Vimeo
I want to shoot weddings with this beast!
