      It really is just circumstance to be honest. If Lando didn't give Oscar his place back in Hungary, then we all hate him. And even when he did eventually give it back, a lot of people still hate him.
      Honestly though this was a team blunder. Sure Oscar probably got a bit greedy and focused on fighting with his teammate, but I don't blame him partly since he is a racer and he was simply racing. On the bigger picture yes Oscar could've had the decency to play the team game and all, but it also isn't without Lando's faults.
      Even if Lando did better to start this time around, I still think he was playing it conservatively which probably partly lead to what just happened in the race.

    • @fuzzyfuzzwuz
      @fuzzyfuzzwuz 2 месяца назад +5

      The Hungary team orders only reflect one of multiple issues at McLaren - Lando is also an underperformer in big moments. Say what you want but that is what history has shown us so far. No intended disrespect to the Landos/Leclercs/etc of F1 but it's easy for us all to say someone is a "championship caliber" driver - until an actual championship is on the line. In Lando's career, 100% (six, including today) of the races he's been on pole, he's failed to lead after the first lap - of all the years where you cannot afford for this to be the trend, it's THIS year. Surely McLaren strategy blunders are probably the biggest issue with the team but let's not act as if Norris is driving like someone who is performing head and shoulders above his teammate.

    During the peak Senna-Prost era, the drivers were extremely clear that they hated each other's guts, so they had to fight among themselves. Today's McLaren hasn't reached that level of toxicity, but at the end of the day, every driver is driving for himself first and foremost (including when he's supporting his teammate because when it happens, it's his decision and/or what he thinks is the right or the best thing to do). You can't expect the #2 driver to help you all the time, because it's not his job to babysit or enable you, especially not all the way to WDC and individual glory.
    Mutual understanding and respect between teammates are what make a strong lineup. Team orders only work if they make sense. You can't force teammates to do this or that against their will, or whine about one being uncooperative because the other can't solve their driving problems or because the team screws up the strategies. Doing so will only provoke in-fighting and encourage drivers to take extreme measures, like crashing into each other every other race and potentially throwing away the points.

    I assume it’s a combination of multiple factors that has led to this tense situation.
    - Lando’s initial hesitation in giving Oscar P1 back in Hungary essentially poisoned the well.
    - We don’t know the fine print of Oscar’s contract, but it’s highly likely, that a manager such as Mark Webber, got Oscar a contract with special clauses in place for team orders.
    - Like Lando, Oscar finally tasted glory this season and both are hungry for more. He also knows, that on a good day, Lando is incapable of keeping up with him, let alone overtaking him. He will grasp every opportunity to challenge Lando’s seniority.
    While this situation is not ideal for anyone involved, it’s highly entertaining both on and off the track. Some of the comments even went as far as bringing up animosity between the UK and the Commonwealth.
    I’ll enjoy the bonfire while it lasts.

    • @macnahamic
      @macnahamic Месяц назад

      @@neetsk12 I don’t see how it would make him a hypocrite. Thus far, he followed the team orders given to him in his rookie year and this year, McLaren didn’t ask for Oscar to move over *yet*. As for Webber, he endured some hefty disrespect by Red Bull when he was at the team longer than Vettel and essentially helped the team iron out what was necessary for them to win four championships in a row. Vettel got preferential treatment nonetheless and the rest is history. Therefore, it would be very believable, that Webber negotiated a contract for Oscar that would limit McLaren’s use of team orders to scenarios where Oscar has no mathematical chances anymore at becoming a world champion. McLaren obviously knows that having Norris get more points to challenge Verstappen is the most logical approach. The fact that they haven’t done it, hints at there being a special clause in Oscar’s contract that doesn’t allow them to do it.

      @@diangara3298 fine, I’ll clarify that. Webber wasn’t as fast or ruthless as Vettel. If you need proof of that see 2010-‘13. I agree, Webber went down fighting and wasn’t good enough to beat Vettel. He wasn’t number two, but he did play the team game and Vettel didn’t.
      Webber was fast on his day, but he wasn’t multi WDC fast and certainly not as ruthless as Alonso, Max, Lewis, Schumi, Vettel, Senna, etc. Webber had an equal shot in ‘10 to be WDC. He had much more experience and proven speed than the very young Vettel. Vettel seized the opportunity took the title and with it Webbers confidence.Ultimately Webber is no better than Rubens or Bottas.

    McLaren - if they had been smart - could have won both the constructors' and drivers' championships. That they don't work out that correctly shows that they are a mess. mclaren have a simple policy. the team goes for WCC, which stands above all as they make the car. the drivers are both free to pursue their individual WDC as long as they dont risk the teams WCC. its a good long term tactic. Drivers take the accolades and leave when the team who has given everything struggles. so from an entrepreneurial (and thats zack brown for you) point of view its the best approach.
      will they sacrifice oscar at some point? yes they will ask him to, no guarantee he will agree. but that point isnt with 8 races to go and him trailing lando by 44 and lando trailing max by 62. that point comes with 3 races to go and lando being within 20 points and oscar out of contention.

      Both drivers don't deserve it and neither does McLaren deserve the Wcc. Coz they're literally fighting only max and they've still not caught up with 2 drivers. They operate like they're still a mid field team with their horrible strategies.
