I truly appreciate your willingness to stay with small modular setups. It helps make it easier to wrap my brain around the idea of hardware modular without having to build my own spaceship cockpit.
Be prepared for flying the spaceship though. Dipping your toe into modular is like flying into a black hole. You're never going to get out. Modular GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) is very contagious. I know because I have it. If small setups is your thing, steer away from modular, unless you have a heap of self-control and can resist the GAS pull (unlike me).
@@joostknippels6370 If I had the income and living space, a spaceship would be welcome. But those two constraints will definitely help rein in where I'm able to go with hardware modular.
You nailed it at the end... Modular is about ideas and the happy accidents that happen when twisting knobs and plugging cables. Thats the magic of it. Thanks for the amazing jam and ideas!
I bought a Clep Diaz when I got into modular because of you 2 years ago almost. I love the module and use it all the time. I have been pairing it with a DNIPro Qtone Quantizer and it is jammable arpeggios all day long. What an awesome module and so versatile. Great video! PS. Wish you still did as many modular reviews as you did back when I got into euro. Much love!
Such a good example of a good use case for modular. You got the endless bassline generator... and as you said, to play notes you want... you already have the keyboard. It's awesome to have some randomness into your modular to let it give something back to you.
It's amazing that you do so much with such a small case. A lesson for anyone thinking of getting into modular - start small and limit yourself so that you're forced to learn the functions of a small amount of modules DEEPLY. Then move on. I recently started working out of a smaller case and it is yielding great results in my "awareness". I would like to move to an even smaller case to amplify the affect! The level of awareness that you possess on this rig is truly impressive. This is inspirational! 💯
Thanks for the kind words! That’s pretty much my warning to anybody who wants to get into modular. You need to know ahead of time what you want out of it and aim for that religiously. Otherwise, you’re gonna spend a lot of money and barely be able to make anything usable. Know your goals!
The year is 20XX. The hyperwars have ended, and all that remains is scienceroommusic, humming softly into a contact microphone, pre-amp pedal, and some sort of esoteric resonator fashioned our of a rusted tank hull. It sounds vaguely like .... chiptunes?
The first groovebox manufacturer who can implement this separation of pitch with gate triggers is going to be super successful. I think that’s why your setup works so well. Plus having something like CD for modulation. I think the closest I got to doing something similar was with Bitwig’s Grid. But then again it’s not hardware and wasn’t nearly as fun or good.
Duuuuuude. I was just messing around with my modular the other day and I came up with the craziest four oscillator tone. I recorded it so fast and turned it into a super crazy, fun impromptu track!
I suggest Richard Scotts Videos for people who want to know what modular is about. Favourite quote "Robert Moog made a home organ out of synths by adding a piano keyboard to them.
There's an iPad app Rozeta, i have hooked up to my TD-3 that has a 303 style sequencer, but you can also randomize in whatever key I want. Clocked to incoming midi, so i have my MC707 trigger the TD3 and Rozeta can make new patterns in key, which you can shift and mutate all you want, in real time. I wish I could afford a big modular system, but don't need it for basslines.
I love how you are enjoying your modular! I think I saw you using a Marbles clone in the past-have you switched to LFOs for a more deterministic setup?
could you be so kind as to maybe post the components of your beloved modular rack set up that you have demonstrated here. And maybe as a bonus, a cost breakdown of all the separate pieces.
Yes you can. There are multiple modules in the free version that support random voltage outputs, like the turing machine (which is also available in hardware). I also know there are many many tutorials online that teach you how to use it. Just search for the module name on youtube and a world of random voltage opens up to you. VCV Rack can do as much as hardware modular and more, due to the extra features a computer can introduce, like knob automation without CV in on the module (another module can add cv to controls). VCV Rack taught me how to fly my hardware. And it costs nothing to try 6 copies of an oscillator which allows you to experiment with things that wouldn't be possible on hardware (or would cost you a second mortgage).
the sound is dope, but I wonder which part can't easily be replicated in Phase Plant for example. But I don't want to talk bad about it. Turning knobs is definetely fun. Although I think modular is more for jamming and experimenting rather than it is for efficient production (considering the cost, the wear and tear, the recording & editing process and unexpected behaviour of the modules). But I'm open to other opinions :)
I replied twice with a detailed list of all the modules and prices but RUclips deleted my comment twice. Grand Total was $2790 for all the modules and the case, tax not included.
No, no, no. My wallet will commit sudoku if I heed the siren song of modular. I am already outspending my talent 15:1 with regular synths I am unable to finish a song on.
@@RickyTinez Unfortunately the ratio is mostly from me being untalented rather than spending being obscene. Synthesizers are downright therapeutic and I will carry on no matter how many of my neighbors develop PTSD and repetitive strain ear injuries.
