  • The feet are the weakest point on very cold winter hikes, and keeping them warm is the trick. Here I give a few tips to stop freezing and male your winter trips more comfortable, including the use of plastic bags! The boots I use are the Viking Hunter GTX, and the Foot bags are Helsport fotposer.

Good ideas Eric. I've made heat reflective leg gaiters that I wear over my polypropylene bottoms and then my nylon wind/water resistant pants. The leg gaiters weigh under an ounce/13.9 gm for the pair. They are water and wind resistant, breathable and of course heat reflective, adding about 9.5 deg. C.

Good solid advice in an appropriate setting. The tree roots from the fallen tree would make a great warmth reflector for the fire:-) I would also add how important it is to keep the legs warm so that the blood is not cooled on its way from the core to the feet. The long footbags are great for that. My experience is that once that blood is cold you mostly need an external heat source to warm it up ;-) I always wear an extra base layer and carry a light pair of insulated overtrousers for stops in -10C and below :-) Great video. Looking forward to the next one :-)

I've been using sealskin waterproof socks as a vapor barrier for 3-4 years now. They acts as an inter sock and vapor barrier. I usually carry 2 pairs on multi day trips. Whichever pair is not being worn stays in a dry bag against my body. This way I always have a dry pair.

  • @bengt_axle

My favorite tip is to use wool insoles, socks and avoid goretex or waterproof linings. I like leather boots with a large toe box. The leather breathes and keeps your feet drier than Goretex boots. In temperatures below 0C, you don't need waterproofing and it traps moisture (even though it is supposed to be breathable). I always choose wool and breathable materials for winter, and avoid waterproof materials. Of course, I do not camp outdoors, so it maybe different for winter camping.
I wonder if wearing a waterproof sock inside out would achieve the same result as using a plastic bag.

Great advice as usual. I've got a pair of Steger Mukluks of canvas and moosehide that "breathe" but any other boot won't and the plastic bag in the boot is a brilliant idea. I do a lot of winter camping in Wisconsin, USA so I'll try that next time out. I also have a pair of down booties and covers for just hanging around the campsite. Again Erik, another incredible video!

Hi Erik, we love your videos. A trick I use to keep feet dry is to clean them carefully, then apply MItchum antiperspirant liberally, air dry that then put on the boots. That works for me as it keeps the perspiration down to a minimum. The bag trick works well too, but I find it less stable for hiking on steep terrain. Stopping to rewash and reapply during the day is not a bad idea either. Good luck.

These footbags must be exellent when digging snow to prepare a place to put up the tent or to make a fire, digging snow at least for me means getting a lot of snow all over that will melt on boots and clothes. A problem with wet boots exept from being less insulating is that they will freeze inside the tent during nighttime unless you take them in to the sleeping bag wich could be quite uncomfortable. Your way, using plastic bag between socks sounds very good, will test it.

Wonderful videos. Thank You. Three winter memories; When it is so quiet in the woods that you can hear the snowfall - the almost sighing sound of snowflakes falling. Next, being out in the woods in the snow as it is getting dark - looking into the approaching blackness out amongst the trees and then a clump of snow falls from a tree branch - to me a scary sound. Finally, in the USAF - working on B52s at about 3am. Twice I heard a sound - exactly like whales! Someone told me it was the parked bombers sliding as the ice formed under their tires. Think about that - ice - lifting a plane weighing well-over 245,000 lbs.
