Huge fan of Sherlock Holmes and just discovered this game. You saved me a ton of time trying to understand and explain it! Thanks!

Might wanna check out our review on this one, too. It's a bit dated; Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective and Chronicles of Crime will make you feel a lot more like you're solving a mystery

whats to stop players just reading the clues in the book that are shown on the back of the card

Other players would probably notice if you started trying to check them all. Each clue for a particular case is randomly scattered throughout the whole list of clues in the book, so you'd have to memorize which numbers are relevant for the case you're working on and check them all before someone calls you on your crap. You COULD, theoretically, check a clue for a location you're not on, but there's no way of knowing which clues will be valuable and which ones won't, so you wouldn't know which clue to check instead of the one you're on. There are flaws with this game, but considering when it was made, that mechanic is pretty much as solid as it could get.

I love the slight disdain in your voice when you stated the game uses the roll to move mechanic. It puts me off right away
