Beautifully drawn and refreshingly calm, The Secret of Kells hearkens back to animation's golden age with an enchanting tale inspired by Irish mythology. - Кино
The reason she does not go in to get the key herself is that Aisling is one of the Fey Folk and the Fey of Ireland lore cannot touch Iron. Which the key was most likely made of.
Scrambles TheDeathdealer I think it’s because she’s a pagan spirit and the man in the room is a holy man of God. She doesn’t sing “you must do what I cannot”, she sings “you must go where I cannot”. Implying she can’t enter the room.
I think it’s beautiful that she helps Brendan finish the Book of Kells even though she is excluded from truth and redemption it offers.
@@steeevealbright but she's a good spirit right? Are you saying that even good spirits can't enter holy places?
Orchid Rain She’s still a pagan spirit. Perhaps the Christian God’s protection keeps her entire kind from entering holy places. Doesn’t matter what her motive is.
So if a fey folk is hunting you down you just wear iron armour

Pangur Ban is a reference to a traditional Monastic poem written by a monk about his beloved cat. Pangur ban is the cat's name.
Song Translation:
You must go where I cannot,
Pangur Bán, Pangur Bán
There is no substance to this life
This world is but a vapor,
And we will only be alive
For a short time.
That's kind of creepy if you think about it. And she doesn't go in and get the key herself because she can't cross the threshold . . . Aisling is a lot less cute now
ookaookaooka Why less cute? Because she is not christian?
what does her not being christian have to do with anything? I personally think it's creepy because she's all like "we're only alive for a tiny bit, life is nothing but mist etc." You're really jumping to conclusions.
"What is the nature of this life? Your life is but a vapor that is only visible for a little while and then disappears" -Quote attributed to James the brother of Christ
I think you guys are over-thinking this. There are Biblical and pagan references throughout the movie, none of which are sinister.
what language is the song in?
ps aisling was always sort of scary to me :/
The Irish Language is so beautiful and poetic. I wish I was fluent in my native tongue.
It’s never too late to learn!
I'm 3rd Irish
There’s 7 ways to pronounce everything
I learning it I shall sing to my children in this even if most here in the states may find it weird
“Irish” is not a language, if I remember right. It’s Gaelic.
The cat goes with Brendon during his travels and his ascent to adulthood. The cat goes where she cannot. ;( Holy fuck my heart.
+Sherb Ex (SherbX) OH MY GOSH I never thought of it like that before!!!! :'( :'( :'(
+Sherb Ex (SherbX)
Yeah but also he has aged about 10 years, and that cat would have been long dead. Even his uncle is old and grey by the time he goes home, yet the cat hasn't aged at all. I couldn't get over that when I watched this.
+nakedraychel It is symbolic, this whole story is about finding the sacred feminine inside the male soul. The tower, the walls, the forest, the monks that never mention god. I always read books that are meant to be literal as storytelling and read fiction or fantasy as if it were real (reading between lines, he who has ears let him hear).
+nakedraychel What about the old tiny man (brother Tang) that was already old when the story began. You can still see him helping abbot Cellach in the end, and he looks exactly the same age as before.
+micoromico because he is God. O-O
Tomm Moore is becoming the Irish Miyazaki.
Excellent thing.
soooo true
Miyazaki’s excellent student
Absolutely! After seeing WolfWalkers, I'm convinced Cartoon Saloon is the Irish Studio Ghibli
@@dehu3010 Miyazaki will be proud of his excellent student
@Mullerornis lol 😂
Pangurs eyes are blue and green. Aislings are green, and Brendans are blue.
+DeterioratingSanity I know really xD
Chili Skovhus There are cats with one blue and one green eye, too! They are referred to as "odd-eyed whites". Interesting symbolism!
Chili Skovhus yes my ship is alive
Terrifying they are just kids
@@xinyiyuan6808 Aisling is hundred of years older than Brendan
My cat was named after Pangur Ban. He was an extremely sweet, loving, and kind cat. He died way before he his time a few days ago, when he was just under 1 and a half. I am listening to this song to help cope and to honor him. He has gone where I cannot.

What does being turned into a mist form by a fae do for your life expectancy?
Aisling makes a brief appearance in Song of the Sea. On a bus no less.
MoteyJoe yes, she actually makes a couple of appearances. In the bus, she's located on the right side (left side of screen because the view is looking towards the back of the bus) seated near the aisle: the first time is for 2.39 seconds starting at 38:01 before Ben asks the bus driver about getting to a spot on his hand-drawn map. She's later shown again at 38:28 for 3.39 seconds just before Ben's lines: "Those stories that Mom told me... they're all true.... Are you really a... selkie?"
I'm this guys daughter and I wouldn't stop smiling after I saw that, that was like not expected but a little expected, that just makes me wonder why they did that it's a question that needs an answor but it's still pretty cool :D
James Staudenmaier One possibility is that Mr. Moore wanted another passenger on that bus, but also wanted that character to move about.
The subtle details behind drawing Aisling (how she moves and how emotions change her appearance) had already been worked out in preparation for this earlier work in which she's a major character.
JimShew2 that is very true I think you are rite about that
+MoteyJoe She was hunting for candy.
I taught for two months in a Chinese school. While I was there, I showed this film to my students (8-12 years old). They fell completely in love with it, and by the end of my time there they had memorized this song. Now whenever I listen to it I tear up a little, because I can still hear their voices singing it.
Notice the beautiful animation of the spirit Pangur Ban is shadowed by her cat form at 0:43
Such a lovely film. I love it.
Tigerman1138 Pangur Ban's spirit is so well animated I couldn't draw it with out messing it up thats how good it is it AWSOM :D
In song of the sea, Saoirse goes up the stairs at some point as a human girl but her shadow is that of a seal! it's the little things :)
@@vhs3760 I know, I love selkies
Edit: in fact I did the same thing in my series! But before I say anything, I'm going to have to explain my series a little bit. My series is a object show, but with a different plot. My series has magic, god and goddess, spells, life, death, hell, heaven, angels, demons, and spirits.
In the new parts of my series, a character named "Angel" but is not an Angel. But angel has become a human, And chooses to stay that way. but becuz this is a object show, Angel's real form is a backpack with wings. And his real form is who he needs to be, so the spirits of Finland made it so that whenever Angel is looking at his shadow or looking at himself in the mirror. He's not seeing himself as a human, he's seeing himself as the object he was before❤
Gives me chills every time, without fail.
Lol poor Pangur Ban is all "WHAT. JUST. HAPPENED."
In Gailge (the Irish Language), when an 's' is surrounded by an 'i' or 'e', or both, the 's' is pronounced like the English 'sh'. So just like 'Sean' is pronounced "Shawn", 'Aisling' is pronounced "Ashling". Hope that helps. :-)
thank you🐇
I admittedly thought it was Ashley when she first said it, until I saw the spelling.
Here's the translation for this song:
(Oh btw Pangur Ban is a cat in irish poetry)
You must go where I can not,
Pangur Ban, Pangur Ban.
There is nothing in this world but mist,
And we will only be alive
for a short time.
+An Owl Isnt it, ""nothing in this life but mist"" saol - life.
It means both
thank you!!
If you'll excuse me, I'm going to hunt this film down now. I heard it was good, but now, I MUST see it.
You might still be able to hget it on Amazon prime.
Its on netflix
Does anyone know of anywhere online where I can watch this for free?
Markurrito It was on Amazon for free for me when I use the Roku. I stated it was on Amazon prime (Not hart to get it) but it might also be on Netflix or Hulu. Crackle if you're real stingy with money about renting (and incredibly lucky.)
Never mind, I already found it. If you're still trying to hunt this movie down, here's a link: megashare.info/watch-the-secret-of-kells-online-TmpJeE1BPT0
I love her expression when she recognizes the limitations of her being... "I cannot..."
What a beautiful song, beautiful language with infinate depth in its lyrics.
I wish irish Gaelic wasn't a dying language, it's truly one of the most majestic languages imo
I just saw this movie and the Gaelic she sings to to the cat is similar to what Father Aiden says in English to the cat about life being short and how we are just mist.
My dad's birthday present to me was "Cats in Books". I flipped through the first few pages and immediately recognized the Book of Kells because I watched this movie. I said " the Book of Kells is here! " and my dad said " oh, you know about that? ". He's always reading up on history while I find it boring; I like watching animated movies, he doesn't like them. I told him about "The Secret of Kells" and asked him if he'd like to watch it when he gets back, and he said " sure" ;)
You must go where I can not,

I remember finding this film on netflix one day when everyone was gone when I was like 8 I never knew the meaning of this movie but it felt important it was all mesmerising yet sad and dark sadly I forgot the name of the movie as if it was a fever dream it was no longer on Netflix whenever I searched I tried telling people about it but they never knew what the hell I was referencing to i finally found it as of today now that im older maybe I'll learn something worth keeping
Oh my god this exactly happened to me! I was eight years old as well and loved this film even though I didn't understand it. Netflix was so different back then and I just remembered how beautiful the film was throughout the years but could NEVER find it and only remembered the thumbnail but after years I finally found it and almost cried 😭
Literally same! I must’ve been 8 as well… I was so mesmerized I’ve been humming pangur bán ever since. It is amazing.
OMG SAME I SAW IT ON TV AS A KID LIKE 7-8YO 😭😭😭
I freaking love this animation studio.
Its such an underrated studio.
Me two
@@Obi-One-Kenobi it is
I like to imagine, that Cellach was a little more refreshed and lively, than usual the next day, because he had a very relaxing sleep, and very sweet dreams, as if someone sang the softest lullaby to him.
I may be a cynical old lady with a lump of cold hard lead where a heart should be...but this sequence makes me tear up. Every. Damned. Time.
How does a studio go from making a show about a skunk who learns kung fu into making a beautiful hand drawn movie like The Secret of Kells?
A good story makes everything else easier.
Also if what you say (and I say this cause I didn't know this) is true that both cartoons were made by the same animation studio, Skunk Fu has actualy a quite good and extremly well stylized (pardon my english) animation. The studio is well known for their stylization which is quite unsurpased. Hope that answers your question. :)
Milos Zivkov Oh it does in a way, but I was more commenting on how a studio can change their style so suddenly. Its like if Disney made a slasher horror out of nowhere. You would never see it coming.
True that. I did't get the intention of your comment. Fun fact though, the producers of this movie also produced Triplets of Belville, an awesome french movie. :D
Well, the Studio is working for different people. Look at what Topcraft was doing before turning into Studio Ghibli. Lord of the Rings, the Last Unicorn, The Flight of Dragons.
Speaking of The Last Unicorn, the people owning the Last Unicorn are thinking about hiring the Studio behind The Secret of Kells to animate the scenes from the script that where cut and rereleasing the movie in theaters.
First time on hearing this song - this entire movie, in fact - gave me a wondrous shiver throughout my body. Truly captivating this scene, from the imaginative animation right down to wee Christen Mooney's beautiful voice 8-)
better than let it go any day
+Max Carter I heartily agree!
I KNOW RIGHT!!!
So much better!
totally!
Can we stop comparing everything to Let it go/Frozen in general just to make the latter look bad?
This one of the most beautiful animated scenes I seen in my entire life. :)
The Cat: WHAT. Just happened to me?!
I love this song and of course this movie!! I have watched it over and over again. It became one of my favorite movie!! Also the same director made another super awesome movie called "Song of the sea", it has a consistent style and heart touching quality! Highly recommend!!
Dude song of the sea came out after this
movie chick You reading comprehension needs work. He mentioned a timeline nowhere in that comment, only that the same director made another movie named "Song of the Sea".
Totally agree, I loved the movie of the song of the sea, it's a master piece .
Didn't you notice that every man in the front story has the same face? SongOftheSea, Secret of Kells, Wolfwalkers.
This movie is just like Coraline in the sense that it was one that terrified me, but was so beautiful it kept me on the edge of my seat. ♥️
Man... I was not having a good time when I watched this movie for the first time. Back then, this song made my body so cold. It sent my shivers up my spine and the hair at my arms and legs stood up. It's hauntingly beautiful and made me feel so much while feeling nothing at all.
I've never seen the movie but watching this has made me want to watch it! Way better then any other song. Touched my heart just like Song Of The Sea
I love this movie, When It finished, I had mixed feelings, happy and sad at the same time I don’t know how to explain it. Is a beautiful movie indeed.
This movie had me in a trance the whole time. One day when I have kids I want them to watch this. And I will sing them to sleep with this song lol
My brother named his cat after this cat.
Gillian Moore I am planning on doing the same. Your brother is not alone, many have done so.
What was the cats name again?
Pangur Ban
I am on the search for a cat myself. I want to name it the same if it fits her.
Cat responds to higher pitch or words ending with higher pitch.
So, if you want your cute cats to respond when called then, may be Pangur Bani would be more suitable.
But Pangur Ban is adorable as well.
Edit: emphasis on "ni" like pronouncing streched "e".
I love how the cat is like what just happened
I would be to if that happened to me.
This was my favorite movie as a kid, and this part was always my favorite, the music, the cinematography, it’s all beautiful
Pangur ban's shadow walking down the stairs is giving me the chills every time. Awesome work. I did like Up, but this deserved the Oscar more.
Agreed. So good.

I FINALLY FOUND IT
It almost took me 10 hours of my day to find this!
All I had to do was search up Tom Moore movies... **facepalm to myself**
Tomm*
I literally just had to look up “Secret of Kells song” lol. I watched this movie for the first time earlier today and I just had to listen to this again.
Yea I saw this song, forgot it's name and wasted 1 and a half hour of my day to just find the name of the movie. And another one and a half our to watch it.
NO REGRETS.
Such a lovely song, one of my favorite moments.
I always love Panger Ban's flabbergasted expression at the end.
Years later and this still gives me chills they did an amazing job on this movie
I just watched this movie. It's a visual feast for the eyes. The artwork is beyond anything I've seen in animation. So buy it/rent it in HD or else you won't get the full effect. And there's so much depth behind the story for an animation. It's captured my heart.
I found it. Coraline wasn't scary to me as a child, BUT THIS WAS. This movie was just so haunting and whimsical. Love the song though
I hum/sing this song sometimes, and my friends are like: "Where do I go?"
My son talked Me into seeing this film. It's absolutely beautiful. The symbolism in it is incredible. And it is beautifully drawn & has gorgeous music in it too! I was so impressed!
If U wanna see another incredible underrated animated film, check out "Mary & Max". I never laughed or cried, as much in my life! :-D
Mary & Max is indeed fantastic as well. Cried my eyes out at that movie. You should see Harvie Krumpet as well. It's great short movie (23 minutes) from the same director. Also claymation and really moving. Narration by Geoffrey Rush.
And this is why I and others love these kind of movies
Apparently, the girl who voiced aisling came up with the tune herself.
One of the most lush films I've ever seen... would love to see more like it!
Also, Aisling is adorable :3
I love this movie I havent seen it in forever
Something about Aisling singing outside the crevasse in the tower with her face peering through really gets to me.
Beautiful film and music. Magically captivated by the animation. Top 5 stars

I've seen this movie last night and I'm SOOO in love with it. It's just wonderful.
I watched The Secret of Kells with my kid and absolutely fell in love with it. Thus, this song has been stuck in my head since. Thanx for posting as I would not have been able to get it OUT of my head without hearing it one more time!
I am obsessed with this song & the amazing movie.
I feel chills while aisling is singing
Why, when i see this animation i want to just sit, and cry?
A beautiful and haunting animation! A true masterpiece!!!!

This is on par with the Ave Maria segment in Fantasia. That Beautiful! Also, I don't care what people say on the story, I thought it was great.
I just watched this movie about a week ago on netflix and I loved it. The art is just so beautiful. They gave the land such a wonderful mystical quality. As soon as it finished I put it on my movie wishlist. Definitely one I can enjoy watching over and over again.
I loved this trilogy so much. Just utter brilliance!
