When your name is Kevin Olusola, or Kirstin Maldonado, or Scott Hoying, or Mitchell Grassi, or Avi Kaplan (and, of course, Matthew Sallee now) and you are part of a group of great musicians named Pentatonix it's not necessary to use the autotune. Never.
Singers. Musicians.. not so much.

They use pitch correction not autotune. I don't think it's necessary, I think if make them sound worse that they otherwise would. I don't know why they do it. It obviously make it faster to record them, because you need fewer takes or maybe they like the esthetics of the pitch corrected sound, but I really don't.

Just to clear things up...
*Autotune:* a program that takes an entire vocal track and *auto*matically corrects each note to a defined pitch (usually used by people who can't sing; almost definitely NOT used by PTX)
*Pitch correction:* the process of editing a few individual notes in an otherwise unedited vocal track, just to make it cleaner (almost definitely *slightly* used by PTX in studio)
*Overdubs:* adding extra tracks after the main tracks have been recorded, usually for effects, adlibs, or overlapping parts (used by PTX in many studio songs)
*Layering:* a type of overdub, specifically adding or duplicating vocal tracks to achieve a bigger sound/choir effect/etc. (used by PTX in some studio songs)
*Other effects:* literally anything else. For example, the megaphone effect on Mitch's voice in Bohemian Rhapsody. An in-studio effect, yes, but not autotune, and has nothing to do with his musical talent.

Pentatonix definitely do use pitch and tempo correction - their audio mix engineer says he uses Melodyne for that, which does include the option to correct an entire song to a particular key automatically: www.soundonsound.com/techniques/inside-track-pentatonix

Maekayla Lee They do sometimes, for effects. They don’t recreate everything perfectly live but they can arrange it so it still sounds full without the effects

I love the band Home Free just as much as Pentatonix, but I've noticed in their live performances that they use far too much extra overdubs added in, which kinda feels like cheating to me.
When I saw this video i was like "wait they use autotune!!!" then I read the comment and was so relived

they sound the same i'm gonna cry,, all artists use a little autotune on studio versions just to polish it up, but from live performances you can tell which artists use it more obviously

Sasuke Uchiha it is all a cappella so Kevin can do the same thing live as he did on the track. I’ve seen them live twice and I assure you it’s the same from the track live like there is no difference.

I think they do in studio just to correct some issues and other things you know?
They use auto tune but it’s so little it’s not noticeable. It’s only used to polish they’re vocals on the album. But they’re so good they should even use that.

I absolutely hear the difference. They sounds so real and wonderful live, the albums are absolutely tuned, they kind of have to to compete with pop radio though I guess.

Yes, definitely heavy on the pitch correction. Whenever I hear them I think of the Rugrats theme song, haha. I find it so odd that people can't hear it. It's like the people who can't see the auto smoothing on new tvs now a days.
Or possibly akin to Taste Testers.... Food, Wine, etc. But, just maybe a little easier to Detect ( Auditory ) compared to Taste Testers or ( Visual/ Optic ) Pixel Manipulation....? Tragic how "Auto-Tune" has helped Non-Singers become Financially Wealthy ( NOT an "Auto-Tune" FAN !! ). Not saying All "Professional" Singers MUST have 'Perfect Pitch' ( Not everyone can be Donny Osmond ), But it seems that "Auto-Tune" should NOT Replace 'Hard Work' !

I reckon for the studio videos and released tunes they at least use some for tweaking, like the majority of artists nowadays. I don't doubt their talent lmao, hecc I've bought all of their albums, but it would be wrong to say they don't use it
if you watch their tour on Netflix their actually recording music in part of it and at no point do they add any auto tune. they are litteraly that good. and they also prove that every live show

1960's music and singers either knew how to sing or they didn't. No such thing as autotune back then. Bobby Hatfield of Righteour Brothers and his rendition of Unchained Melody live show. One of the best singers ever along with Steve Perry of Journey fame.

💯% Complete & Total Agreement ! So, guess that raises the obvious question... Is 'Authentic Talent' ( Singing ) Success possible in The 21st Century....? How EASY is it to just "auto-tune".... Many, many Artists & Producers/Directors/Audio Engineers will and do eventually Admit to "auto-tuning" their Final Product ! There IS definitely a time & place for 'auto-tune' ( Cher's "Believe" ), But generally.... ( Still generally & over-all, NOT an "Auto-Tune" FAN !! ). 😥🤮☹ 😡😡
They don’t use auto tune but on studio recordings they do adjust the levels of each individual vocalist so the mix sounds more equal. Naturally the human ear hears mid to high range pitches easier than low ranges which is why on the videos where it’s just them, no mics, being recorded live on an iPhone or something it’s harder to hear avi and Kevin because they produce lower pitches than the other three. This was just to educate though, I love them and I’ve been to three concerts haha

Pentatonix uses "autotune" (or pitch correction) for most of their tracks and it's easy to see with a pitch analyzer if you just run their audio through an analyzer. They also have some audio published without any modifications so it's not about if they can sing or not, it's about the produced audio they want to publish. The thing is, majority of public prefers instrument like pitch perfection over natural human voice and this is reflected in Pentatonix productions, too.
What I got from this was the reminder that there is a time in the Evolution of Pentatonix when there were three blondes.
People who wonder if they use autotune don't doubt they're talented. But having sung in many groups, this video confirmed to me that they do indeed use autotune A LOT and rather heavily. This doesn't mean that they aren't talented; it means that the synth like sounds of their blended voices in the recordings have had work done. When they sing into individual mics, they use pitch correction as well. It just makes the voice more even and steady. Your video made this clear. Thanks!

@@sadie_bear I don't think so. Yes each voice is recorded separately, put through an equalizer and properly balanced to give that perfect polish and blend, but that's not the same as auto-tune. Their pitch is not 'adjusted'. If one is out of tune, they'll do it over.
some of these tracks were more produced than others and you can hear the difference, so I wouldn't say it's all just voices without any effects or editing, but it's not autotune

Some are a bit pitchy but that’s just human. They are still really good. Far better than those mainstream singers who rely heavily on autotune to make their voice good.
Obviously they are very talented and can sing very well live, I guarantee they use a little autotune on some of their studio recordings. It just makes it sound better.

It's true. They don't use autotune, but their producer says he uses melodyne on their mixes. That's in the studio, that doesn't necessarily mean they use it live, and there are some performances where it's clear there's no way to use that kind of production. Melodyne is IMO superior to autotune, which gives hip hop and r&b tracks that robotic sound and it's awful.

In their studio versions of their songs they use auto tune. Everyone does. If they didn’t use auto tune on their studio versions it would sound strange and it would not sound like it does. That’s part of being a fucking singer.

I think people are confusing auto tune with studio tricks. Reverb, echo etc. These folks can sing live without it very well. I'm guessing there is some auto tune in the studio versions and official videos but the other effects are obvious in the official videos/studio versions. I just question they didn't add actual percussion sounds in to the Bohemian Rhapsody official video. Sounds different than the live clip here. And too good / too much for one beat box guy as amazing as he is. He did his job in tricking me if it really is just him. Or, they are doing loops and adding on. Either way. They are very talented and a welcome change to the shitty fake music industry
